No, we will not be having an event this year. We are taking a much needed break.
The good news is that our friends at The Business (Magic City) are taking over and organizing their own special July event in Anacortes. You can all still have your annual trip to Anacortes. You can all still come to town for Shipwreck Day.

Il est de ces nostalgies où le grand manque ressenti est pour un certain endroit à une certaine époque, quelque chose qui n’existe plus, qu’on ne pourra plus jamais revivre. “Fleuve”, le nouveau disque de Ô PAON, s’inspire en partie de cette nostalgie: les hivers froids où il y avait beaucoup ne neige, les moments passés seule à la maison à réfléchir sur son lit, ou les longues marches dans les banlieues de Montréal au temps où il fallait utiliser un téléphone public pour contacter ses proches.
Le “fleuve” en question est bien entendu le fleuve Saint-Laurent.
Ce genre d’album-concept commence à l’adolescence, on y rencontre en chemin de jeunes fugueurs, et l’histoire se termine avec le retour au Québec d’une narratrice nerveuse de se sentir différente, à un point tel qu’elle ne se reconnaît plus, qu’elle ne sait plus comment trouver sa place dans la société qui l’a élevée.
Sur ce disque, Ô PAON (Geneviève), montre ses influences de façon plus intentionnelle qu’auparavant. Les guitares sont électrifiées et distordues, on y reconnaît les textures de cette époque pré-internet mentionnée ci-haut. Comme sur les autres disques de Ö PAON, les paroles sont le résultat d’un mélange de colère et de frustration. Geneviève adresse directement son sentiment d’impuissance face aux politiques des gouvernements canadien et québécois. Elle demeure présentement aux États-Unis, elle a perdu son droit de vote et elle ne sait pas quand elle reviendra habiter dans son pays natal.
"Fleuve" est une lettre d’amour écrite à quelqu’un qui nous énerve.
L’album a été enregistré à Anacortes (dans l’État de Washington), dans une ancienne église catholique à la fin du mois d’octobre et au début du mois de novembre 2013 avec l’Australien Gus Franklin (avec qui Ô PAON avait travaillé sur Quatorze/Quinze Ans).

There is a type of nostalgia where the yearning is for a certain place at a certain time, something which no longer exists, something you’ll never be able to re-live. “Fleuve”, the new record by Ô PAON, is partially inspired by this very nostalgia: the cold winters when there would be a lot of snow, the times spent alone at home pondering while lying on your bed, or the long walks in the suburbs of Montréal in a time when you had to use a payphone to contact your people.
The “fleuve” (river) we are talking about here is obviously the Saint-Lawrence River.
This sort of concept album starts off in adolescence, along the way we encounter young runaways, the story ends with the Québec homecoming of a narrator who is nervous about feeling so different that she is completely alienated by it, she doesn’t know what role to play in the society which raised her.
On this record, Ô PAON (Geneviève), shows her influences more intentionally than ever. The guitars are electrified and distorted, we recognize the textures of the pre-internet era mentioned above. Just like on previous Ô PAON records, the lyrics are the result of a mix of anger and frustration. Geneviève addresses directly her feelings of powerlessness when faced with the politics of Canada’s and Québec’s respective governments. She is now living in the United-States, she has lost her right to vote and doesn’t know when she’ll come back to live in her home country.
"Fleuve" is a love letter written to someone who annoys you.
The album was recorded in Anacortes, Washington, in an old catholic church at the end of October and beginning of November 2013 with Australian friend Gus Franklin (with whom Ô PAON had worked on Quatorze/Quinze Ans).

For now there are no more plans. Totally blank horizon. We will enjoy hanging out in this void for as long as possible before the inevitable rising waters of inspiration compel us to make new plans. Or maybe not.

The very first event to attend once you arrive in Anacortes Friday, July 18th is Anders Nilsen's book signing at Watermark Books (612 Commercial Ave.) from 4PM to 5PM. Some snacks will be provided.
Otherwise we have received confirmation that Isaac Hanson (the picture above is him a couple years ago) will be selling old comics as well as "goofy posters for imaginary films" during the book fair on Saturday and Sunday.
Zinnia Jackson and Mica Gold will be debuting their comic, Butt Adventure, at the fair as well. It's about two butts who meet at yoga class. We have been waiting for this comic to come out for MONTHS. The event of the summer (in our opinion).

Several Anacortes bands will take the stage during the fourth annual Anacortes Unknown Music Series July 18-20.
The series of concerts will take place at 1202 Seventh St., both in the Unknown upstairs and the Croatian Club downstairs. Concerts will also be held across the street at Causland Memorial Park.
A pass to all the shows is $45 and is available via www.anacortesunknown.com.
Ever Ending Kicks is fronted by Paul Adam Benson, who also plays in Hungry Cloud Darkening and LAKE.
The band’s newest project “Motorbikes,” a cassette EP, is available now. The four songs were recorded using one microphone at the Department of Safety, an artist space in town, in 2009.

The other half of Hungry Cloud Darkening is Nicholas Wilbur.

Mount Eerie is a music project created by Phil Elverum. It started as the Microphones from 1997 to 2002 and then Elverum changed it to Mount Eerie in 2003.
Elverum is the main member of the band and collaborates with other musicians on his records.
Elverum produces art and music through the P.W. Elverum & Sun, ltd. company. All the projects are produced in a homemade style, in unusual packing ideas. His first release “No Flashlight” by Mount Eerie came wrapped in a large poster.
P.W. Elverum & Sun is used for Elverum’s own project and is not a full record label.
Mount Eerie has performed all over the world and released many LPs and CDs.

D+ is an indie rock band featuring Bret Lunsford, Karl Blau and Elverum.
The band was formed in 1996 and has put out a series of LPs since, through P.W. Elverum & Sun, Knw-Yr-Own and K Records.
K Records is owned by Calvin Johnson, who previously played with Lunsford in the band Beat Happening.
Lunsford’s brother Jonn Lunsford is part of The Crabs, along with Lisa Jackson.
The duo produced several albums in the ’90s and then stopped for 15 years.
On their album “Shut the Door,” their kids join them, one on keyboard and one on drums.

Ô Paon is Geneviève Castrée, who works with different artists on her albums. On “Quatorze/Quinze Ans,” she worked with Australian musician Gus Franklin and Canadian artist Nicholas Krgovich. For “Courses,” she worked with Thierry Amar, Nadia Moss, Sophie Trudeau, Jonah Fortune, Julie Houle and David Payant. For “Karl & Geneviève,” she worked with Karl Blau.

It has been a dream of ours for a long time to include more cartoonists in the festival. We are announcing with pleasure and pride that the dinner presentation this year will be made by none other than Anders Nilsen.
Artist and cartoonist Anders Nilsen will present a slide reading from his book Rage of Poseidon. The book is a collection of short pieces following popular polytheist deities, tweaking their stories and setting them in the present day. Nilsen distills these familiar stories' individual moments in stark and delicate silhouettes of black and white. He immerses us seamlessly in a world where gods and humans are more alike than not, finding the humor and sympathy in their (and our) desperation. Anders Nilsen is the award winning author of Big Questions, Rage of Poseidon, The End and Dogs and Water among other works. His comics have been translated into numerous languages and his drawing and painting has been shown internationally. He is also an occasional educator and curator. He lives in Minneapolis.
Anders hasn't been to the Pacific Northwest for a few years, this will be a rare chance to meet him and here him speak.

What do expect the temperature to be like for AU this year?
Anacortes weather tends to be moody and unpredictable. We've seen it all: wet fall-like festivals, Florida humidity festivals, as well as dry and sunny editions.
You worry about packing your suitcase, we'll worrying about rescuing our events from unseasonable situations (stuff can be moved indoors if need be).
Our clothing tips are the following:
Wear layers. Prepare yourself for both sunburns and soaking wet muddy feet. Bring a light shirt, a wool sweater, and a raincoat. Bring sunscreen, sunnies and a straw hat. Bring a pair of shoes that cover your toes. Bring a pair of flip flops for when it's too hot. But yeah, bring a pair of wool socks just in case.
If you are forced to travel light and our Pacific Northwest weather is a concern to you, fear not. Anacortes has a small variety of thrift stores open on Fridays (and most of them on Saturdays) where one can buy an emergency wardrobe for a few bucks. ALSO, we'll be having a city-wide rummage sale on Saturday July 19th. Perfect timing.
The most important clothing item to remember to bring is your bathing suit.
