can we talk about how this is the best scene in the entire movie. the score. the boat. the jaeger foghorn motif and the up angle we see lady danger at as she makes her way to otachi. the way raleigh and mako let the boat drop and readjust their grip on it. the way they use it like a BAT. the determination and coordination between them. the way they absolutely rock otachi’s shit. the way otachi uses its tail to grab and throw it away. there was no need for this scene to be so fucking cool AND YET!!!!! Fantastic article!! The guys looking for it were fish researchers who saw it one time, knew instantly it was an undescribed species, and then tried for nearly 20 years to find and document it!

It's a type of ghost pipefish, related to seahorses, and it floats around coral reefs looking like a piece of algae and hunting unsuspecting prey

They are, of course, named after Snuffleufagus from Sesame Street!

Later on it the project, they got citizen science involved, and people across the Pacific started reporting sightings of snuffy fish from all over!

Hooray for science and hooray for S. snuffleufagus !

I spent the day with my great team at the Rødovre Reptile Show here in Copenhagen, showing off some of the beautiful and fascinating objects that are in our care at the Natural History Museum Denmark.

Most common questions included:

What’s that?

What’s that? (Two seconds later, pointing at another specimen and not listening to the answer of the first question)

What’s THAT‽ (pointing at a sea turtle throat, triggering a series of explanations of how leatherbacks eat jellies and flush seawater out and what happens if they now eat plastic bags)

Are they dead? (No, just pining for the fjords)

What is the liquid (70% ethanol, no you shouldn’t drink it, yes that has been a problem in the past)

Do you have [common name I don’t know]? (Probably, but not here)

What’s the most venomous animal you have? (Sea snakes, but the most dangerous we have on display here is Daboia russelii; those are two different things)

IS THAT THE FROG HAS LAYS EGGS IN ITS BACK‽ (YES! PIPA PIPA!) GROSS! (yes but did you know they do somersaults whilst mating to get the eggs into the female’s back? So they can’t mate if the water is too shallow?)

It is very rewarding to feel that a lot of people, especially kids, walked away knowing a little more party trivia than they did yesterday, and maybe some are inspired to pursue a career to study the animals they are already so interested in.

Graced by Geckolepis typica from Madagascar. I love that they’re quite round creatures and then they have these dainty little toes. Also, their scales are full bone and both scale and skin come off when they get grabbed, which is…unpleasant. Consequently, catching these geckos for research without damaging them requires special techniques. 19th century researchers used bundles of cotton wool, but I imagine this wasn’t very effective, because cotton still has a lot of friction and the friction would pull the skin and scales off. In my (quite extensive) experience, the best technique is to carefully and quickly flick the geckos from their tree trunk or branch into an open dry plastic bag using a finger or stick.
