call me terminally academia-brained but i do think a lot of the fun of character analysis is figuring out how to build a compelling argument for a particular reading using lines of evidence from canon as well as meta/intertextual support
and you could say that what i’m saying here is basically “a lot of the fun of doing character analysis is doing character analysis” but let’s be real a lot of fandom character analysis is pretty heavily vibes-based. and i think that’s where i really chafe up against the traditional thought-terminating fandom attitude of like, everyone’s opinions hold equal weight and any interrogation of that is inherently hostile. because i think it’s fascinating to dig into where others are coming from in terms of their views on characters or dynamics or whatever, especially when they differ significantly from more commonly expressed views, and part of that digging is asking people okay what parts of canon are you drawing from to support your opinion? what parts of canon are you disregarding or downplaying? how does this argument hold up in the light of how race, gender, class, ability, etc. operate both in the piece’s in-fiction and real world contexts?

the poster that this incredible illustration is based on is extremely striking. but while searching for it, I also found earlier posters for conveying this message along with a corresponding one for summer, and I fucking love them. absolutely lovely graphic design work. (both are from 1924, artist is Austin Cooper)
the one I was looking for originally also has a summer variant. (artist is Frederick Charles Herrick: 'it is warmer below' is from 1927, 'it is cooler below' is 1926)
But I feel like an asteroid. I feel like the asteroid that wiped out the dinosaurs. I was very, very guilty for years. I had to go to extensive therapy because I was like, “oh my god, I, Lochlan O'Neil, single-handedly destroyed fandom culture?”
She didn't she didn't she didn't. That wasn't it. She wasn't an asteroid.
She was the first skater that fell through the ice of Web 2.0.
I was also a teenager who found an amazing world, and My People, and friends I'd still talk to every day, on the internet. I spent years getting my mother to let me go to conventions and meet friends in distant cities. I started ambitious internet communities I didn't have the experience or skills to bring to fruition. I don't think there was a lot of difference between us, in a lot of ways. It's not that I was somehow smart or skilled or suave and she wasn't. She didn't have some awful planet-killing stink or velocity that she brought to the show.
The difference was this:
In 1994, when the Endless September began and the Internet felt perpetually full of stupid newbies, there were 20 million people online.
In 2001, when I got my first LiveJournal account, there were 500 million.
In 2012, when she joined Tumblr, there were 2.43 billion.
When I started out, and you joined a new messageboard or chatroom or mailing list, you had to introduce yourself to the community. Except in the biggest of websites, people expected to log onto the internet, read through all the new things that had been posted to their local bit of it, and then log off again. Older members took it upon themselves to greet the newbies and answer any questions they might have, directing them to the relevant community FAQs. People would say things like, "Oh yes, I remember you. This is only your second Thursday with us, right? I hope you have fun!"
I joined an Internet full of adults who got online through their jobs or their universities, one of the first wave of kids allowed to roam free. And the proportion of adults to kids kept steadily changing, but until DashCon, I don't think people understood how much. I remember a discussion that happened in early 2000s slash fandom, where the very true observation was made that in particular artistic ways, we had all agreed to suspend shame, which created a unique kind of space. As a community we could all admit that we were there to be embarrassingly enthusiastic in unusual ways about absolute nerd shit, and we understood that it wasn't life or death, it wasn't rocket surgery, but it also wasn't going to get broadcast onto the clouds and our bosses didn't know who we were. Everyone was (willing to act like) an adult, and we could hold the circle and create safety there.
That felt like a lot of geek spaces, then. Anime conventions, science fiction conventions, furry conventions, videogame stores, D&D meetups. Images were bulky and pixelated, video incredibly hard to move. When you got to a con, it was like a brief oasis of Weird that sheltered you and screened you from view, and you ended up volunteering because the weary, cynical, intelligent, kind people in the con ops office looked like you were throwing yourself in front of a bullet just for offering to run a clipboard down to the other end of the hotel for them.
The ice was thick enough to skate on. The circle was strong enough to let you be brave and funny and silly and free, and you could buckle down with some friends and clean all the trash out of the ballroom by 11am on Sunday, and you'd see everyone next year.
The bubble was going to burst, but nobody seemed to worry about it.
Things were changing fast for fans, all kinds of fans, in the early 2010s. Conventions that used to get news coverage like "Local Freaks Weird Out Hotel Employees: This Weekend Only" to "#Cosplay: The Hottest New Trend" and from Geocities sites that shut down if you exceeded your page visits for the month to AO3 getting 10 million pageviews a week.
It was great. We could conquer the world together. We could stay safe and together and the circle would hold.
And then the ice broke open and Lochlan fell through. Right through the bottom of that goddamn ballpit into freezing arctic sea. Right into years of people sorting through the churned ice of the wreck, taking years to come to the realization that there really had not been ANY goddamn adults in the room making sure things were okay. The community had not actually failed so much as never been formed in the first place.
Because as it turns out, group-bonding techniques that work for 100 or 1000 people do not work for 10,000. Or 100,000. Or one million. Or one billion.
That line about agreement to suspend shame sticks with me all these years after because the defining feature of post-Dashcon Tumblr has been shame. And scorn, contempt, derision, and hatred. Cringe, in short, and kys. Exactly the kind of bullshit I saw every day in junior high school, and ran to the Internet and fan conventions to get away from.
I got the kind of community and mentorship and support that have made fandom a refuge and a resource my whole life. Lochlan O'Neill didn't. Not because there was anything worse or dumber or less experienced about her.
Because a system built in the 1990s was incapable of bearing the stress of a load fifty times bigger than what was already "way too full."
Just because I'm from one generation, and she's from another.
hi! i just wanted to say that the donation links were not picked all willy nilly and that the venezuelan community has already determined which are actually trustworthy, and those are the ones mentioned in the thread and the document linked. venezuelans do not trust the government so we implore everyone to avoid donating to any charity org associated with the government. if youre still unsure about it, commissioning venezuelan artists that you already know and trust is a great choice.
let’s talk about how they made it impossible to function without a phone and digitalised everything and then turned around and went “actually! these phone things aren’t safe for kids but it’s magically ok once you’re eighteen. guess you’ll have to have your life dictated by your parents now lol cause we’re gonna take the devices away from you. IT’S FOR YOUR OWN GOOD WHY ARE YOU COMPLAINING”
ok my apologies. take away my ability to buy anything too ig because these fuckass stores don’t accept cash anymore. take away my ability to communicate with people outside my house and school because I can’t text and I can’t email and I cant drive to them either and I can’t even fucking get public transport without a phone either. can’t order at a fucking restaurant without being asked to get a membership and install an app and also very sorry but you can only order through our online menu now! have you ever considered that it’s not just about instagram?
I keep thinking about how WhatsApp is counted as "social media" which means that teenagers won't be able to text each other unless they have the right kind of (often more expensive) SMS plan - And how the physical environment that I grew up in that made it possible for kids to just walk to each other's houses and bang on the door is now largely gone, and parents are just less likely to let the kids go roaming like that with no real answer about where they're going or when they're coming back anyway.
Or how spending hours on the phone to a friend a long way away, then hanging up and ringing another one, was a cliche for "the teenager" since pretty much the dawn of mass adoption of phones and only died as they moved from the landline to the mobile and then to MSN...
[Images- one photo per decade from the 1940s-1990s of a teenager lounging on the phone]
This feels like a really dangerous attempt at curtailing kids talking to each other.
I haven't spoken much about the current presidential elections cycle in this country because not even other fellow Latin Americans bother posting anything at all about us, so I've gathered non-Colombians don't care much about us overall.
But what will take place tomorrow is truly, tangibly, a matter of life or death. The presidentials second stage sees the first stage winner, a hawk, corrupt lawyer who's been in charge of defending far-right paramilitaries, Catholic church pedophiles, and the biggest pyramid scheme fraudster in our history, along with having actively helped coordinating paramilitary operations to further the historical persecution of anybody from the Colombian Left even as mild as social democrats along with rampant land dispossession driving forcible displacement, having sworn to diminish state resources and operational scale by deleting entire ministries and offices around social funding to "optimise" the public treasury (what Milei, Noboa, Kast, and Paz have done in Argentina, Ecuador, Chile, and Bolivia) and who literally actively threatens to eviscerate everybody on the Colombian Left and anybody disagreeing with it going as far as to expressly state he intends to do here what Netanyahu has in Palestine and Lebanon as he admittedly identifies as an Islamophobe, having received full sponsoring to do so by Trump's government; against a social democrat human rights lawyer who has dedicated his entire career to defend the very people targeted and affected by everything the former has been involved in, who led a historical case against a former president who's the central figure in contemporary far-right politics in the country and extractivistic coke paste trafficking all across Latin America (case during which the country's major judiciary proved said human rights lawyer right). The human rights lawyer's father, one of the very few actual Communist congressmen we've ever had, was murdered by paramilitaries on the order of the national army leading ranks back then after years of having been forced into exile with his son and wife because of having been made into military targets precisely because of his partisan and militant persuasion.
I've made my thoughts on liberal democracy very clear in this site as a fellow Communist, I hate that liberal democracy has led us to this once again. But if you pray and believe to any degree in the divine, please, please, pray that the latter of the aforementioned ends up winning these elections. We've deployed just about any material resource we've come along with to support and promote his campaign because it will truly make a different between going back to be ruled by systemic state terrorism as we were for decades; or continuing social and labour reforms, institutional support for the proletariat (including dispossessed peasants forced into proletarisation), historically neglected victims of misogyny, femicide, queerphobia and transphobia, and the diplomatic policies through which we've come to support Palestinians as part of The Hague Group.
If you could spare a prayer for us, I beg you to, please, do so. I don't know how I could pay you back for it, but I'd remain immensely and accountably grateful for it. We've been and will continue being starkly critical of what Milei, Kast, Noboa, Paz, and Fujimori have done to make the lives of Argentines, Chileans, Ecuadorians, Bolivians, and Peruvians into an increasingly precarising living hell and will remain in solidarity with them; we've supported Venezuelans and Cubans in their struggle against Trump's pawns threatening their lives. Please, help us keep up with this and the resources and leveraging instrumental to doing so.
It's just the fact people focus more on trying to Separate Vizviepop from the Homestuck Pilot and define her role in it rather than the fact the big three names there everyone is focusing on are all pretty complicit and won't say shit on eachother's racism. Just so they can enjoy the Pilot. It doesn't even matter what role someone has in it. It's still on her channel, it's still under Hussie's control IF they are ever upset about anything in it, and it's still Toby Fox's choice to be fine with being associated under anyone's name.
Why is everyone so obsessed with babying Toby Fox for things he is Absolutely aware of by now? Being a grown adult who has known Hussie and the content here for years on end? Why are you scared For him about antis of the other two coming to get him? Why are you screaming no instead of thinking a little further on why these creators are together and why two of these folks can find success so well despite being fairly racist and the other doesn't have to step out of his comfort zone ever?

Content Warning; I complain about your favorite creators and the lack of discussions I'm seeing. Toby Fox, Hussie, Whiteness, Brief mention of Gooseworx and Vizviepop. Your Indie media isn't holy and good for just being indie. Mostly just ranting about Toby Fox's comfortable proximity to Japanese Culture and not much else to the point you kind of raise an eyebrow about some things. These people are not your friends and they're not inborn geniuses who paved the way where others could not.
Putting this all here as a rant because I'm kind of tired of seeing people belittle some peoples concerns about it all, while also ignoring the general requirements of being a Popular Indie Creator tends to seem! Like it leans very! "Just wouldn't call out fellow creators on their racism and be OKAY with working with them".
I've been considering and working on leaving Tumblr entirely so I'm less inclined to care about what goes on this blog or not before I drop.
As Deltarune gets progressively casual Vague Japan in Aesthetics, as Toby Fox maintains his position working around Hussie and Hussie's officially approved works [who freely allowed racial stereotypes, likely/or even deliberately purposefully in many cases, into his works that spanned from being just antiblack or whatever the fuck was happening with Damara and pisspoor handwaving representation of colonialism through Lord English that never gets touched on in any real meaningful way by the characters who are clearly written as very White due to the paradox of making "racially ambiguous characters" without thought that is always going to default to the creator's inclinations/most common culture in their works, which Toby Fox never seemed to learn the faults of as he keeps the yellow skin with Kris, where he regularly took inspiration from various cultures and religions for the sake of aesthetic or feeling of impact despite the characters themselves being ambiguously culturally christian besides Rose who maybe gets into weird occult shit but never comments on anything through that lense because 1. shes thirteen half the time and 2. i really dont think Hussie put that much thought into it all. Alongside everything regarding the trolls and the general attitude regarding Hussie and their copyright swaying attitude that even if you like Homestuck can admit it gets a little weird. (and why would they have to own up to it, rolling my eyes here, theyre well off, whats the point in addressing it themself beyond niche forum apologies when the fandom shills for them constantly and fights off any discussion about racism and antiblackness on their own ("always kinda thought the only Purple blood that I could remotely call black is Marvus (Idk it's just some HC I have)" "JUST SOME HC" and Marvus is obviously written with aave in mind) because fuck other peoples fair concerns am i right, lets all listen to only the Black folks who are Nice and Agrees with us and not question why most who point it out aren't around us, who needs a woke fandom anyway /Heavy Sarcasm) functionally. Like irregardless of what you say or think about modern times, all of that is Still Baked Into All Of It. Honestly most of this should be things most fans are aware of by now. They literally had a workshop over this, the current folks at writing with direct approval, and still ended up using various narrative excuses to avoid talking about the nuance without having to really truly change anything or god forbid address Gamzee properly - whos been flopped around as a joke since the start, used as a tool to fuck with fans, while also concealing it through a layer of "oh its just genius writing! see, bards are Utilized by their aspect and its kind of like a curse—" or "Gamzee is being controlled/cursed/and used in the STORY to further the STORY" or "no no Gamzee is just White Trash who just so happens to have a lot of stereotypes and its on YOU for recognizing the stereotypes, wow thats so racist of YOU. stereotypes that becomes more and more obvious over time like the chucklevoodoo bullshit that WORKS and isnt actual appropriation in the comic and is just normally named that! but this is still on YOU for recognizing pattern! that does not exist!" instead of accepting that things can co-exist and that yeah, Hussie was pretty fucking shit on that end in regards to purplebloods in general which is still HERE and then allowed to sit there as "culture vultures" while lowbloods remain predominately sympathetically white. Golly this is a lot but i really dont trust tumblr to be updated about any of this At All without even going into their past works] [we should really recognize that Hussie had an irony issue themself and that doing things as ironic jokes doesn't make it suddenly Okay or funny] AHEM. Ahem, Toby Fox's translation habits being centered on English/Japanese solely, etc etc.
All of this is to say: everyone should be really comfortable talking about Toby Fox's role in all of this even if he does not Personally choose every morning to be racist, xenophobic, or anything Of The Sort in the modern day. He is still White. He is still capable of perpetuating ideas, white supremancy, orientalism, complicity, and so on. Racism does not stop at "doesnt say slurs". No matter how much I see about people being endeared by his japanophilia, "haha he types brokenly just like someone learning english from japan!" ??, people calling him honorarily Japanese in youtube comments of the trailer, and general weeb status growing up — some things should Probably Be Talked About Here.
Am I saying he is being xenophobic to Japanese people through these actions? No. He could very likely be completely and utterly respectful in everything he is doing here. Maybe he can even do something interesting in talking about Asgore or the Holidays about appropriation; or maybe it is something entirely different like the theories of Asgore having those themes due to the presence of Carol that I have seen written about. Or maybe he is just genuinely Like That the same way Alphys is a massive weeb and isn't going to be portrayed negatively because Toby Fox's experience of the world, his life, heavily impacts his work in many ways he Does Talk About or mention, or can at least be picked up on in fascinating ways! Or ways like This.
But it does suggest a lot about other things, and what he is fine with being around.
But can we maybe sometime start thinking about why japanophiles are so common, why it appears as mutual and is so Popular, why Toby Fox has decided to treasure the culture so highly it is the only one he decided fits in his Vision of the game and only spoke to the studio dedicated Specifically to Japanese about translating Other Languages — and then decided the effort of speaking to other studios or teams who specialize for Said Other Languages who could speak and help explain things to him as professionals - must have been too much to do over All the years even if it would functionally just be rereading script and approving things or not based on research he Can pay Others to help with. "In the past I have looked into various options with my publisher, 8-4, but nothing has come of that yet." I wonder why. You should try asking other translation studios that. You even recognize maybe you should try alternatives after that. Do you not see how odd that looks from outside by anyone doing a brief google search of Who your brilliant translator is?
Maybe we don't have to be completely dismiss the idea of our favorite creators potentially being, as you guessed, kind of really White about things? Not someone who's going to be remotely vocal about it because he does not have to? The fact we don't have to claim "oh these people are so malicious and evil!" to point out any patterns or connections here? We're already having people defend Gooseworx for just blatant racism because its under the veneer of jokes, under the innocence of White ignorance, the fact that she is Indie as if that ever mattered when Indie gets you crossovers with fortnite and Indie gets Undertale entire Orchestras.
Like theres no need to defend anything here. The ship has already sailed. No one is going to be able to "cancel" Toby Fox or whatever just by discussing the fact he views Japanese Culture. Doing it so highly over others apparently that he neglected to learn enough to figure out that maybe he should not be making his main character Yellow Colored again (and while i have seen the concerns, i dont believe its yellowface, just unfortunate coincidences as he genuinely values Japan here too much to pull something like that in any way conciously) — avoiding having any complicated discussions or depiction of someone who is too far away from being White enough to be written. That the closest thing about Race written is about Monsters who do Not function the same way as anything irl in complete honesty and would, at best, just be another fantasy racism metaphor where being nonhuman is used to mask any depiction of things not being Black, or anything truly dark skinned, or any real world issue IF it was ever intended to be a Race metaphor and not something thats "no theyre Just monsters".
Like these can be a thing but can we at least recognize the downfalls of it all? It is OKAY to enjoy media. Can we talk about this without people getting defensive and Really wanting to white knight and idolize a guy they never met, never will, and who really isn't in anyway obligated to defend you back? Who is and was perfectly fine making friends with people like early brand Hussie and staying with them throughout the years without distinction, and who is probably more likely to completely ignore or see any issues with the lenses he views the world in than actually care? Your White video game creators don't have to worry about activism, I'm so sorry you have to hear this, but they do not have to do a thing once they make it big and we should maybe think about that and what we allow to be "the game that COMPLETELY CHANGED , ROCKED THE WORLD OF , online video game culture for... being more comfortably progressive than the usual loadout?"
Hm.
Like. I know it might seem a little hypocritical. I love Homestuck myself, which was way worse than anything Toby Fox wrote in his two games, but I can recognize that it doesn't exactly... ever needed Anything More than the base comic? It should have ended when it ended. There is no true point for a continuation besides doing overtly roundabout discussions utilizing a flawed basis that... kind of deserves to be set down? I obviously imprinted on the comic, I keep plenty of aspects I enjoyed close to me, but I would not mourn the loss of Hiveswap, Homestuck^2, or anything of that matter. Homestuck is a great comic as much as it is actually a pretty shitty comic that was pretty lackluster, stretched out, so full of metanarrative and irony that it's own subjects are retroactively weakened, and impeded in many other ways. Or, just simply, a watery soup that was compensated with a shit ton of addons because there was no true recipe in place and the cook lacked an understanding of what Tasteful is.
I just feel the need to say this because Toby Fox regardless had decided to voice act in a Homestuck Cartoon that continues to try and persist Homestuck through official-placating means.
Okay. Neat personal choice there.
You know. The animated pilot released directly onto Vizviepop's youtube channel. A creator who totally has no Blatantly Racist issues herself and would Never platform or draw fanart of people who've done and were known for their blackface! /Heavy Sarcasm again.
Which Toby Fox appears ambivalent about being next to.
Maybe there are some patterns here that not everyone is being comfortable with addressing.
I'm so tired with what content is getting pushed as amazing and great, while supporting nothing else. What are we all doing.
