Fore Edge Painting: A Tutorial
I said I would write up a walk through for how I painted those books, and here it is, only three months late!
I had kind of a hard time finding good sources when I was learning to do this, so I thought it might be good to write up my process for posterity or whatever. The sources I did use included this guide which is a rough overview of everything, as well as this video on how to gild the book pages.
Ok, gilding the pages. This process is pretty much lifted straight from that video I linked, so I would recommend watching that to get more visuals on how to do it. I'll mention some extra things that I found helpful, thought.
Once the paint is dry we can clamp the pages back straight.
I prepare a piece of foil that's just a little larger than the page surface. This is going to be adhered first with some PVA glue, then fused using the iron.
The glue needs to be watered down so it doesn't stick all the pages together. The ratio is going to vary depending on the glue you use; it does need to be viscous enough to adhere the foil. For my PVA glue I use much more water than glue; I also experimented with cheap Elmer's glue which is much less sticky, in which case the Elmer's glue needed to be more than half the mixture.
So I brush the glue water on the pages and drop the foil on top, working quickly. Then I iron over it on a low setting (around 1-2). I keep the iron on the pages for about 5 minutes.
After ironing, I let the whole thing cool completely before removing the foil's plastic backing - this can take an hour or more. I've found that letting it cool makes it much less likely for the foil to come off along with its backing.
So I peel off the clear plastic backing, and hopefully the foil has all stayed on. Gilding is honestly the most finicky step of all of this, and a lot of the time it just doesn't come out great. If the foil is patchy I may sand it off (being careful not to destroy the painting underneath) and start again.
But if everything turned out well, then you're done! All that remains at this point is the carefully separate the pages, if they did get kind of glued together.
Once they're all separated, fan out the pages and the painting will appear :OO
That's basically it. If you have questions about anything or if anything is unclear, feel free to message me!
