Meet Ryan Sipes, Our New Community Manager
As the title suggests System76 has a new Community Manager, Ryan Sipes, the very guy writing this blog post. Formerly of Mycroft AI (the open source voice assistant), I enjoy working on open source projects and that intersection where people and technology come together. I have a lot of thoughts as to how System76 can play a larger role in the Linux and open source communities, and would like to share some of those ideas here.
For those of you unfamiliar with the culture here at System76, I would like to share that the team is one that actively supports and contributes to open source projects. One of my first goals is to ensure that projects developed in-house, of which there are a few really interesting ones, get released under an open source license for the whole world to enjoy.
Next, I’d like to build a strong and active community around our products. The team here pours a ton of effort into each machine we work on, and it really shows. In order to offer more awesome stuff built to run the software we love, we’ll want a group of people providing feedback, promoting, engaging in a conversation around what we are building. It is our goal to bring our fans into the fold and let them help shape the future of System76.
Beyond what we currently offer, System76 is growing and has already started developing some new game-changing stuff in our new “secret lab”. I want the community we build to be just as game-changing. We must work together to push back on this locked-down, proprietary, walled-garden approach that was conceived in Cupertino. We want to make sure computing stays open, and that the hardware and software we ship reflects that goal.
Over the next few months, I will focus on building community resources. These will likely include a place for projects to live and methods for the community to share ideas and collaborate. I will also work on sharing more about what System76 is working on, as well as our vision for the future.
I’m excited to be a part of this team, and looking forward to hearing from all of you who support our mission. Thanks for reading and follow our blog to stay up-to-date on what we’re up to!
Congratulations to Ryan Sipes :)
