I liked the story behind Venus and Adonis, as told in Ferdinand Bol’s piece. Adonis is fated to die while hunting, and while Venus wishes him victory, Cupid urges him to stay where he will be safe. The composition, with Venus’s body stretching towards Adonis and him inching away to the edge of the painting, really show a sense of yearning. We do not want to see him go away because he may not come back alive.
I've chosen a book on Kathe Kollwitz. From what I've seen, her figures are extremely expressive and powerful.
