lord andar arryn was born as the second son of lord elbert arryn and lady aemma arryn (of gulltown). his elder brother, jon, was the heir and raised for lordship, whilst andar was to be groomed for however his parents saw fit. his father wished for him to be a soldier, but he showed only limited skill with a sword, so his mother, having grown up in the prosperous gulltown, saw fit to train him in coin and ecomonics.
at sixteen, once he was a man grown, he said goodbye to the vale and travelled to braavos, where he was employed as a financial aid in a shipbuilding company. he quickly doubled their profits and the iron bank took notice of him, employing him as a banker. he was excellent at securing loans and travelled extensively through the free cities as a young man. he regularly sent gifts back to his family, of new myrish fashions for his sisters and exotic, expensive food for his brother. he was taught high valyrian by one of his fellow bankers in braavos.
at twenty-one he resigned from his position at the bank and moved to volantis, where he was a guest of the elephant triarchs. he briefly joined the slave trade, and even managed to become wealthy enough to purchase a palace. unfortunately, he fell in love with one of his slaves. it became the knowledge of many, and he was mocked terribly and lost face. it would be his first and only love, and he fled the city, selling his palace and slaves.
at twenty-six he arrived back in the vale, to a horrid illness sweeping the land. for a time, his brother jon fell ill, and he was quickly married off to a much younger noblewoman lest the succession fall into question. his brother made a slow and steady recovery, and soon the pressure was relaxed on andar. nevertheless, he now had a wife, and felt he could not move permanently back to essos. he did his best to aid his father’s rule, and when both of his parents passed, his brother after them.
he never loved his wife, but they produced five children. he had no great love for the eyrie, having spent ten years of his life in essos, and made frequent trips to braavos, pentos, and myr, but never again to volantis. he aided the economical situation in the vale, assisting his cousins in gulltown and was drafting plans of mines to present when he was called to be master of coin. it came at a good time, and so he accepted, leaving the much-hated place of his childhood.
↳ personality.
andar arryn could be judged as a cold man by some, particularly his family or his servants. he is not, by nature, friendly, but he can turn on charm and sweet-talk most, and thrives on attention from others. he likes to be of importance, and he likes to be the best. he cannot stand to be humiliated, or thought of as lesser. this causes some friction at times with his betters.
he has always worked hard to be recognised on his own merit. andar toiled in the free cities to make a name for himself, and bought himself to greatness by his own mind. he is hard working and very proud of his accomplishments.
lord andar is usually calm, even in the face of stress, and is generally a good leader, if not made for the battlefield. however, if he is personally insulted, he will anger quickly. he holds grudges and plans a long, detailed revenge on those who he judges to have wronged him.
↳ lannisters ruling.
andar arryn is in the capital to serve as the master of coin, an opportunity for prestige he couldn’t turn down. as his children are growing older, he also wishes to make alliances out of their hands in marriage, and find powerful positions for them at court. he finds he doesn’t understand the motives of the runaway targaryen prince, and he believes that the targaryens should be in power, not the lannisters, as they have no right to the throne but through marriage. nevertheless, he is not inclined to act on his feelings, as he is advantaged by king arryk’s rule, regardless of his legitimacy to reign. he will always follow whomever has the better offer for him.

“True enough, Your Grace, I have no complaints on the expenditure. I fear I might be pained if I look too closely at the goods, however - the number of rat stews being passed as beef or mutton would surely be great. In time I have learned to be hesitant of most foods sold on the street. I once was given wine promised to be Arbor gold, but I fear it may have had more nefarious roots. Caution is a must at the market.”

“Pentos, my lord? Do tell me, when did you spend time there? I have been there myself. I must say, the goods offered here are...significantly more homely, so much as I can tell.”

The candle wicks had burned low and the wax melted onto the tables and floor. Those in attendance had drank their fill, and were beginning to loosen their lips. It was the perfect time for Tya to do her best work. On a regular day, her birds brought her news of the world. However, this was not a regular day. This was the Harvest Ball. The Mistress of Whispers had the opportunity to get her hands dirty by digging and pressing the most powerful in the country for their secrets in their unguarded states.
The Master of Coin approached. There was not much to be said about Andar in regard to secrets or strings to pull. From what Tya could tell thus far, he was to be trusted well enough. However, everyone had some secret. It was all a matter of finding it out. If this man was to sit on Arryk’s council, Tya would know anything he had to hide.
“Lord Arryn.” She curtsied politely, but did not match the length of his bow. Her face was a painted smile when she stood straight again. Her hands were clasped in front of her. It was a motion she took on frequently. Some might say that it was a symbol of her guarded nature. Tya merely believed it allowed her to better focus on the subtle language and posture of others. Not to mention, it was a simple gesture that gave little of her own thinking away. “It is my pleasure to receive you.”
It would be impossible to tally up the times that Tya had been compared to gold in her life in some way or another. Even at a young age, those who worked with and for her father would tell her that her hair was spun of gold, her smile was golden, or any other assortment of gold speak. It was hard to find them clever after a time. “You flatter me, My Lord, but I can assure you that if I alone could breed the gold, then I would be master of coin in your stead.” She smiled. “But I am not and that is the truth of the matter. How was your travels?”
Andar eyed the woman, though not obviously, trying to take her measure. It appeared as though she might be reserved, and that troubled him - usually, to bond with those he was working alongside, he would engage in a few nights of drinking or hunting or some other revelry. Most of those, however, were confined to the realm of men, and it seemed it would be tough to forge a friendship with a woman. Andar was careful not to allow his annoyance to show.
“I must consider myself lucky, then,” he said. “I thank you for asking, my lady - I found them well enough. I managed to see much of the countryside, both in the Vale and through the Crownlands. Unfortunately, I am not well acquainted with all the lands in the realm, though I hope to be in time.” He preferred to make his wealth in cities, through trading and infrastructure, rather than agriculture. He decided that she would likely know much of the ins and outs of the city, and so ventured another question.
“Is there anything you believe I ought to see, in the city? I would like to take its measure by my own eye before I begin any proposals.” He was keen for his first to be successful, to prove his worth, and the backing of other council members could only be beneficial to his efforts.

Andar had done his best to dress for the occasion, in spite of arriving in King’s Landing just hours before it started. He had ordered his things to be taken into his chambers and was quickly fitted for ball attire. He wore his house colours of blue and white, buttoned high at his throat and with a long cape that trailed behind him, dragging on the floor slightly.
He found himself a glass of deep Arbor Gold, and sipped lightly at it. His tongue had never quite grown used to the taste of Westerosi wines, but it was better tonight he wasn’t reminded of the wildness of his youth with aid from Volantene wine.
There were a few guests he particularly hoped to become acquainted with, and it seemed as though the gods answered his prayers when one woman came into view The King’s spymaster - or perhaps spymistress would be a more apt name - Tya Lannister.
“My lady,” he said, to catch her attention, and then swept himself into a deep bow, likely lower than strictly necessary. “It would please me to make your acquaintance.” He straightened. “You look beautiful tonight, my lady. They always did tell me the Lannisters bred gold, and now it seems I have found the truth of the matter. That I had that talent, perhaps my job of filling the coffers would be made easier.”

I have arrived in the capital.
I want to be certain of what to expect; I have been to many courts before, I have met with important people, I have talked and wheedled and lied and found my way. Somehow, none of these tasks were as daunting as the one set before me. Perhaps I was filled with the cockiness of youth, the surety that I would not fail. Perhaps it is because now I seek not only my own glory but that of others, in making good marriages for my children. Perhaps it is because this is my kingdom, and I cannot flee. In Essos, if something went awry, I could set sail for the Vale and need never think of it again. Here, the consequences will follow me, dogging me like a creeper in the night.
I haven’t time to write more - a council meeting awaits me.

hi! i’m tenzin, i’m 19, and i’m rp-ing as andar here. i’ve been rping since i was quite young, both on and off tumblr, and look forward to joining you all!
andar is the second son, aged forty-two, and is a father of five. he spent his early life in essos, moving there at age sixteen and returning ten years later to finally ‘settle down’ after suffering a humilitiation in volantis by falling in love with a slave. if your character would’ve been to/been in contact with people from volantis in around 488/489 feel free to say they have knowledge of this.
