Finally I am able to write to you. I won't get into the details but it has been brutal. War is ugly my love. I do hope it is over soon and we are able to restore peace to this land. I am well my darling, please don't worry your pretty little head about that, just a few scrapes and bruises. You would give me a good scolding though. I was not able to sleep so I sat up most of the night outside of my tent looking at the stars. I drank all night and now my head is splitting. Don't be too angry with me love, sometimes it is the only way a man can ease his mind. The things I've seen, the things I've had to do..but, I said no more talk of that, but Peggy, it troubles me greatly. I long to be in your arms again. You could make me forget. The General is calling me my darling. I'll write again as soon as I am able.

Words cannot express how pleased I was to receive your letter today. I have been thinking about you since you left to join the battle. Things have been quiet here since the army left but I have been keeping myself busy with my family and friends. My father is entertaining more Continental officers this evening and has made it clear that I am to attend and appear civil as much as I can. Upon hearing that you are drinking again, I am not surpised. I can understand where drinking may help a man clear his head and I know you are never one to become drunk as many others do. I think about you always. You never leave my thoughts and I pray one day soon we will be reunited once more. My darling I must leave you now. My father is calling me. I love you John, always and forever.
