Devon posed for our drop in figure painting session at Eureka Studio Arts last week. I couldn't resist putting the skeleton I behind her on my painting. @souldestroyerr

Work in progress, this was the first 3 hour session of 4 with the model. For some reason I was working really fast! Couldn't seem to slow down, so I figured I'd try and cover the whole 20" x 16" canvas during the sitting. Over the next few weeks I will try and slow my role and bring out some detail. right now it looks kind of like a Matisse. I went back out to Blue Lake to add another layer of paint on this one yesterday. I think it's done. I was really focused on using loose, fast, spontaneous brushwork. I figure if I make a mistake, I can just paint over it so no loss. I have been drawing from a comic artists photo reference book, trying to get consistent light and shadow patterns. I've been thinking a lot about who I want to be as an artist, what my voice is. This image canes to me in the middle of the night. Maybe my creativity is stretching out like roots that spread out looking for a new place to find nourishment.

This morning, I revisited this mustard field for the third time in a month. By this point the yellow flowers had passed on until next year. I got to meet the owner of the property, who was having a good time picking out all of the familiar buildings. He then asked me the price... ....well I don't like my property THAT much!

I got to paint in Trinidad with several of my painting buddies today. I feeling quite sun soaked now! In this painting I really let go of control, spreading the paint on like frosting. I'm not used to working this way outdoors, maybe it was the cold breeze, that made me let go of control! #CropVideoSquare

Portrait of Avery Arbaugh son of Joshua Arbaugh and Cija Alexis Bellis. I saw him in this suit when he played President Roosevelt in Annie. It made me think of one of my favorite portraits by Max Beckmann. I have always loved the way he created bold geometry in the self portrait, with his strong planer approach to the form and the stark black. It has to be one of the most strikingly dramatic portraits I've seen in person! Now that I look at them together, I see that he simplified the form much more then I did!

"Cari" oil on canvas 12" x 9" Just finished this today. I was fascinated by the geometric relationships in the photo. On one side of her five is a dark shadow cast by the shape of her hair, on the other side is a shadow cast by her face, and in the middle is the dark framed glasses with the blue highlights matching the piercing gaze of her blue eyes! Such fun navigating through all of these layered relationships. #CropVideoSquare

"Haley" oil on canvas 12" x 9" I think I'm done with this one. My initial goal had been to abstract the form more and create more movement with the paint. But I got caught up in the sculptural qualities of her face, so I just decided to slow down and take my time. Still trying to be conscious of of paint quality along the way. I really liked the way her eyes were in shadow and had the red tones underneath, it was an interesting aspect to play up for drama in the focal point. #CropVideoSquare

Work in progress 3rd session of 3 with model. I'll work on it more in the studio from photos. I want to get a little more movement in the paint, and rework the face a bit, maybe change the emphasis on some of the compositional elements. I'm a little un satisfied with the background. It needs something else maybe... #CropVideoSquare
