Friday Fun: The Gender of a Computer
A SPANISH Teacher was explaining to her class that in Spanish, unlike English, nouns are designated as either masculine or feminine.
'House' for instance, is feminine: 'la casa.' 'Pencil,' however, is masculine: 'el lapiz.'
We had written code for 8 months in our home town of Missoula, Montana before it occurred to us we might need to raise money to launch our startup. There were a number of reasons for this: 1) We had no idea what we'd do with the money. 2) We assumed our apps' success would be huge and immediate.
Obviously, this was naive. This naivete was complicated by the fact of our geographical remoteness from the centers of funding.

Pedigree® Adoption Drive™ 2011 and help a Dog like Ripley
Help take Ripley for a virtual walk around the web and unlock a £1 donation for the Pedigree Adoption Drive! #PAD2011 and save a dog like this from taking his last walk
Pedigree Adoption Drive 2011: Where Does The Money Go?
Hopefully by now you’ve already taken Ripley on a virtual dog walk around the web and unlocked a £1 donation for this year’s Pedigree Adoption Drive. We’re hoping to raise a grand total of £100,000 for rescue centres around the UK, so make sure you tell your friends to get involved too.
Since 2008, the Pedigree Adoption Drive has raised over £1million, helping rescue centres across the country continue working to find loving homes for the 120,000 dogs who are abandoned every year. By getting involved, your donation will help fund vital refurbishment of dilapidated kennel blocks, desperately needed veterinary facilities and the supply of essential surgical equipment.
We work with a number of charities, all members of the ADCH (Association of Dogs and Cat Homes). Some of the rescue centres we’re working with this year include The Mayhew Animal Home, JSPCA, EDCH, HULA Animal Rescue, NAWT, Blue Cross, Manchester & Cheshire Dogs Home and Newcastle Dogs & Cats Home. For more details, take a peek at our partners list.

'For all those anticipating some nice soft sentencing. Today is the Glorious twelfth and you have a 30-second start...'
via dailymail.co.uk
An Explanation for those who have outside the UK:
The Glorious Twelfth is usually used to refer to 12 August, the start of the shooting season for Red Grouse (Lagopus lagopus scoticus) and to a lesser extent the Ptarmigan (Lagopus muta) in the United Kingdom. This is one of the busiest days in the shooting season, with large amounts of game being shot. The date itself is traditional, the current legislation enshrining it is the Game Act 1831 (and in Northern Ireland, the Wildlife (Northern Ireland) Order 1985). Not all game (as defined by the Game Act 1831) have the same start to their open seasons - most begin on September 1, with October 1 for Woodcock and Pheasant.

Lessons from History
I just finished reading Bloodmoney by David Ignatius (Amazon) and while it is a good read, the following quote at the begining of the book caught my eye:
First, you push on your territories, where you have no business to be, and where you had promised not to go; secondly, your intrusion provokes resentment, and resentment means resistance. Thirdly, you instantly cry out that the people are rebellious and their act is rebellion.... Fourthly, you send out a force to stamp out rebellion; and fifthly, having spread bloodshed, confusion and anarchy, you declare with your hands uplifted to the heavens that moral reasons forced you to stay: for if you were to leave, this territory would be left in a condition which no civilized power could contemplate with equanimity or with composure.
This was not written in the last 20 years, it was orginally written by Viscount John Morley, State Secretary for India 1905 -1910 (summarizing the anger of the Pashtun tribesmen; quoted in C.E. Andrews, The Challenge of the North West Frontier 1937).
Send a message opposing Murdoch's media takeover in light of hacking case
In the UK s over the last few days, few will not have heard the news that News Corporation has:
admitted responsibility for hacking the phones of politicians and celebrities,
stands accused of listening to messages (voice mail) and deleting messages of a murdered 13 year old girl.
Heard that Ford pulls UK paper ads over phone hacking claims - Yahoo! News http://yhoo.it/j4C6Tn
So if you think that News Internation should be held responsible, please consider signing this message or pass it on.
Dear friends across the UK,
Jeremy Hunt just said he'll let Rupert Murdoch own all of BSkyB. We have three days to flood the public consultation with requests to stop the deal, and call on the government to initiate a public inquiry into the hacking scandals. Let's save our media and democracy. Send a message now.
Jeremy Hunt has just said he'll allow Murdoch to own all of BSkyB. We have just three days to flood the government's public consultation with requests to stop the deal.
We've done it before -- in the last consultation Hunt said our avalanche of 40,000 messages delayed the deal as his officials had to read each email carefully, fearing a legal challenge. But the government is pushing the deal through despite the hacking scandal of murdered Milly Dowler -- the latest grim episode that shows how Murdoch's media tramples standards and ignores ethics.
Murdoch already controls more of our media than is legal in many countries – and is notorious for using his power to skew our politics. The official consultation ends this Friday -- let's tell the government we don't want his media empire to control our largest commercial broadcaster. Send a message now calling on Jeremy Hunt and David Cameron to refuse Murdoch's BSkyB deal until there's a full Competition Commission review and a full public inquiry into phone hacking. And tell your friends to do the same.

Rupert Murdoch's News Corporation already owns 40% of British newspapers and 40% of BSkyB, the UK’s largest commercial broadcaster. In the US, Australia and elsewhere this degree of media dominance would not be allowed. News Corporation has admitted responsibility for hacking the phones of politicians and celebrities, and now stands accused of listening to messages of a murdered 13 year old girl. But our government wants to give Murdoch power over half of our media, allowing him to then squeeze out his rivals one by one.
Since November we’ve repeatedly rallied to stop Murdoch. We've sent messages, phoned ministers, done stunts, and funded adverts and legal challenges. Jeremy Hunt says our actions have delayed the deal and persuaded him to make changes to how Sky News will be treated if Murdoch takes over BSkyB. He's had to hire extra lawyers and is nervous about a battle in the courts. We're making an impact, but the conditions Hunt plans to put on the takeover won't work, as Murdoch regularly runs rings round regulators.
Now is the moment to stand up for our media and our democracy and build pressure on the government. Let's send messages calling on Jeremy Hunt and David Cameron to refuse Murdoch's BSkyB deal until the deal has been reviewed by the Competition Commission and a full judge led public inquiry into the hacking scandal is conducted and completed. Send a message now, and encourage your friends to do so.

An independent and diverse media is vital for holding governments to account and should not be in the hands of someone known for unethical journalistic practices and who often seeks favours in return for endorsing politicians and parties. But people power can stop this deal. If we all stand up together now in the UK, we’ll give hope to independent media advocates across the world.
With hope and determination,
Alex, Sam, Brianna, Alice, Ricken, Luis and the whole Avaaz team

Greatest NHL Player: Gretzky vs. Lemieux totally agree
Greatest NHL Player: Gretzky vs. Lemieux
June 17, 2011 | by Tim | Sports
The recent riots in Vancouver have made headlines lately putting the Canadian city and its residents on trial. The majority of those from Vancouver didn’t take part in the riots. The city blamed the uprising on a mixture of young people and alcohol. With that logic one could wonder why college towns don’t have a riots every weekend.
Hockey is important in Canada, its like football in Texas and its a very serious thing. Losing to America must suck. We don’t appreciate the sport of hockey over here. It is pretty obvious when there are only three players on the championship team the Boston Bruins that were actually born in the states. Almost the entire team is made of up Canadians. Vancouver should be celebrating, not lighting police cars on fire.
Gretzky and Lemieux are some of the biggest names in hockey. With Gretzky pulling in around 200 million dollars during his career compared to Lemieux’s 45 mill makes it seem like Gretzky won in some sense. Although $45 million will get you through a lifetime pretty easily too.
I’ve never been a big fan of hockey, and I’m not sure if America is ready to really get into the sport. I know I’ve picked up on watching soccer, maybe I’ll throw some NHL in there too. [Via]
