             he hadn’t meant to wake ren. but, thinking he could sneak back to camp in the dead of night, fully decked in his armor and sword at his hip, without someone like ren noticing was a bit much. now he knows. 

            “no! no…i uh…just…couldn’t sleep?” he sits down on his sleeping bag, hands moving to unlace his boots, “didn’t mean to wake you.”

‘ no need to apologize, jaune, ’ he mumbles through grit teeth. cold wind ( almost-winter’s wind ) brushes past his shoulders, prickles the back of his neck, but he does not seem to mind. he grips on his blanket, frayed and coarse and worn at the seams. the weight of his fingertips indent where cotton stuffing should be.
