So was Bruce Wayne (in fact, Wayne Enterprises had a huge weapons manufacturing wing, way bigger than Stark Industries), yet you don’t see as many bent out of shape antis in the Bruce Wayne tags.

nice try but Wayne Enterprises’ manufacturing wing very specifically does not make military weapons. In the Nolan Films as well as most other tellings of the Batman mythos, Wayne Enterprises will make things like body armor (i.e. the batsuit) and transport vehicles (i.e. the tumbler) but very explicitly does not manufacture bombs or guns, and Bruce himself intentionally discontinues any scientific development he feels could be used to create weapons even if it means sustaining massive financial losses (see: the cold fusion reactor Bruce developed for clean energy purposes and then immediately shelved when a scientist proposed a way to weaponize it, causing the company to all but go bankrupt rather than allow a dangerous weapon to fall into anyone’s hands)

So, maybe the reason the Bruce Wayne tag isn’t full of “Antis” yelling at him for stuff Tony Stark did is that Bruce Wayne’s biological father was a surgeon and his adoptive father was a combat medic and they both raised him to believe human life is more valuable than profits, whereas the Stark family, unlike the Waynes, literally made their fortune trading in deadly weapons, and Tony’s “heroic” journey is about washing the blood off his hands while Bruce makes a point of trying not to get blood on his hands in the first place?

i mean, except in the first iron man movie tony mentions multiple medical and food related inventions that were “military funding, honey” so they clearly weren’t making ONLY weapons, and he ALSO cuts the entire weapons portion of stark international in the VERY first moment after he gets back from afghanistan even though their stock falls immediately and they lose the money. so yeah, you’re right when you say it’s about “washing blood off” versus “not getting any to start with” but tony applies to a lot of the stuff you just said, and he comes back from it, which idk what world that’s not considered admirable in. also, great that bruce had parental figures that taught him well, y’all know that’s not what tony had at all

The idea that Tony stopped making weapons in Iron Man I and never touched a weapon or shed any blood again after that is ridiculous and honestly verging on delusional.

What was Ultron except a weapon?

What was EDITH except a weapon?

Even his suits were loaded with weapons, weapons, weapons galore.

A “defensive” weapon is still a weapon: the determiner is entirely how it is used.

Throughout all the movies, Tony’s only moral concern is “how is this going to impact Americans”? That was the thing with Afghanistan: he only did the “thing” because it was negatively impacting American soldiers.

He genuinely doesn’t give a shit about what his weapons or inventions do to faceless foreigners or people he doesn’t like. It is very much “out of sight, out of mind”.

So no, he and BW are not the same. Not in the least. Bruce values all life, Tony doesn’t care unless it is

a) American

b) Somebody who matters to him or

c) Saving it can make him look good.

Plenty of people shit on Nick Fury for supporting this, and not guessing that Hydra was in SHIELD, but when Tony sees a whole ass killing machine and then helps them make it stay in the air forever, it’s forgettable?

And btw the guns are in perfect view for anyone coming near the helicarriers. It’s not that he didn’t know what he was making repulsor engines for.

So much for not handing weapons to government organizations (that he himself didn’t seem to trust lol)

Surely it was also Tony who designed those “long-range precision guns.”

Who would know better how to design those, than Tony?

His own movie said he “changed the face of the weapons industry” by working on (among other things) “creating smarter weapons, advanced robotics, satellite targeting.”

And he personally flies around in a suit that needs to fire precisely over a long range, from above.

It would almost be stupid of Hydra not to use Tony to design those guns!

Plus, Fury said the idea he originally pitched to the WSC was for “a quantum surge in threat analysis.”

Analysis; not elimination. It sounds like his original intent was for panopticon mass surveillance via helicarrier, alone.

(He didn’t know about Hydra and Zola, so the idea to do also use an algorithm that analyses peoples’ lives digitally came to him from Pierce – who is, of course, also on the WSC.)

So it sounds like:

Fury came up with the flying-cameras idea.

Tony was brought on to make the helicarriers better.

Pierce was like ‘hey why don’t we use this totally innocent algorithm to predict future behaviour via digital mass surveillance and also maybe add some guns?’

Tony was asked to make the guns / help with the 'targeting.’

Or, heck, maybe it was even Tony’s idea to add the guns?

He know he definitely agrees with Hydra’s ideas to point guns at everyone on Earth (Insight=Ultron=EDITH). And he certainly has no problem with the panopticon aspect as per his sneering at peoples’ “precious freedoms” in Endgame.

The exchange also highlights how this idea from the Iron Man movies (viz. that Tony suffered X and then turned over a new leaf and didn’t do X himself any more) is diametrically false.

It’s the exact opposite of what Tony actually does.

Eg.

Tony suffered under his own weapons in IM1 and his response was not to stop making those weapons; his response was to make a suit with even more weapons (despite claiming not to be doing weapons-making any more). 🤦‍♀️

And then someone else (Stane) uses the weapon Tony created, (after saying he wasn’t creating weapons any more), to attack him and almost kill Pepper.

Tony suffered at the hands of guy with an arc-reactor weapon in IM2 and his response was not to stop making arc-reactor weapons but to tell the guy… how to make it better 🤦‍♀️ (with disastrous consequences that almost killed him, Rhodey, Pepper, and a load of innocent civilians, including kids).

In IM3, Tony having suffered at the hands of said enemy iron-suit wearer he told how to make iron man suits better in IM2 (but has PTSD about a completely unrelated 20 second experience in A1 and no signs of guilt and regret about IM2). And his response was not to stop making iron man suits, but to make even more of them and also one for Rhodey – which gets hijacked by villains, turned against Tony, and also his iron legion almost kills Pepper. 🤦‍♀️

(Oh and also one of his iron man suits activated itself during the night and almost hurt Pepper. Says he’s going to blow them all up at the end of the movie…. but by AOU he has an iron legion again.)

Tony suffered inside the helicarrier engine in A1 and his response was not to refuse to make flying tech any more; his response was to make a helicarrier engine that flies even better. (And/or possibly also the guns to arm it). 🤦‍♀️

Tony suffered under his own creation Ultron in AOU, and his response was not to stop making armed flying drones… his response was to make EDITH and give it to a clumsy teenager.

(And Ultron was only able to attack anyone in the first place because he first used Tony’s personal iron-legion bot manufactory to make himself a body.) 🤦‍♀️

And then in EG, continuing Tony’s pattern, the solution to the Snap caused by the Infinity Gauntlet is to …make another one (as Tony does). Which immediately puts the entire universe in even worse danger than the original! 🤦‍♀️

Tony simply cannot keep his damn trap shut, stop making lethal weapons or helping his enemies to make/use lethal weapons!

It’s been a few weeks since Stede’s ‘Babe’ landed. We also got a rather jaunty ‘No, I’m all in’; a line which offers some healing to Ed’s pained ‘I was all in, man’ in 204.

But, I’m still kind of glad we got the edit we did.

Rhys’ delivery of ‘I’m not. No,’ just leaves me goosebumpy every time. The tautology of it - Stede wants Ed to know absolutely he’s not going anywhere. Then there’s the eyebrow raise showing Stede understands the gravity of Ed’s question; the quiet lingering fear behind it. And the gentleness with which the reply is given. No overpromising. Just slow, whispered, honest.

We also get the little head-shake which parallels and subverts the 109 nod…

…the Yes which meant No

Certain aspects of Stede’s character arc reach a stage of completion here. He’s left Bridgetown, left piracy, and is committing fully to the man he loves in a life they are building by themselves for themselves. No second thoughts. No regrets. He is all in. And the journey to this point is part of Stede’s own healing as well as Ed’s.

We have to sometimes remember the beauty of what they did give us rather than chasing rainbows.

Never has a No meant Yes more.
