âHow about we just go and get the coffee. I donât mind a few minutes driving. I have about a couple of hours before my shift starts. Iâm on the night shift and I definitely could use some coffee.â
âthat sounds like a great plan. youâre driving though, iâve not got a car. canât say iâm jealous about the night shift. luckily for once, itâs been a quiet day, no one got shot at. counts as one of the better shifts, if you ask me. youâll definitely need the coffee, itâs a full moon tonight. people go crazy during the full moons.âÂ

Luke was joking. He had no idea if Logan really was a mind reader. But from how she reacted, now he was almost certain that Logan was a telepath. Not good. âYou can see the future? Okay. Then I guess I can turn things into ice,â he said with a grin. Probably not the best idea to tell her that, even as a joke. âHe knows most people, sure. But he and I, we donât really know each other. Thereâs no way he can guess that Scarlatti was complaining about the robot almost all day just by looking at my face.â
again she snorted, but this time it turned into a laugh as luke played along. she just hoped he was joking. she would just have to manage to speak to toby in between their shifts, it was better if he knew someone was snooping around, even if it was a joke. âturning things into ice, what are you like frozone?â was anyone ever too old to watch pixar movies? she didnât believe so. when luke started about scarlatti, andy finally let out a relieved, genuine laugh. âhe might not know you, but toby and spike go way back. from what iâve heard, scarlatti always complains about his robots.â she was glad for this chance to the subject. âhowâs working with them, though? iâve heard so many good stories of team one.â

âWe found a missing girl today. I mean, she was gone a long time, a really long time. And itâs days like today that just make me realize how much my job means to me. More than I can tell you in some lame speech that Iâve been trying to write for three months. To get to do this is an honor and a privilege. And Iâm good at it. So please, please let me keep doing it.â
methodcopâ:
right. her mom. heâd been wondering when that was going to come up. in fact, he was almost impressed sheâd managed to hold off so long. he nodded, letting her get what she needed to off her chest. sam knew what he thought about it. somebody shows up after that long and just wants to start over? not a chance. sometimes cutting people like that out of your life was for the best...   â  yeah, itâs a lot, â   he agreed. the teasing tone in his voice had faded and he was looking at her seriously.   â but you donât have to do anything you donât want to. you donât owe her a thing. just â take your time, yâknow? âÂ
she was happy to finally get it off her chest. it was a difficult situation, one she hadnât seen coming. it had taken her off guard, and had been affecting her ever since. she knew what was best for her, knew that she shouldnât want a relationship with her mother. the woman had burned that bridge when she had left andy. but what her mother had told her, had sparked doubt to grow inside her. she nodded to his words, glad to hear he agreed with her. although, she wasnât sure if she still did. âyou know.. she told me she called every sunday, but my dad wouldnât let her speak to me. i mean, can you believe that? she was blaming him, after sheâd left!â itâd annoyed her, she was making excuses after all. if she couldnât call, she shouldâve visited. andy was being irrational, but she wasnât going to let this woman come in and ruin everything she had with her father. Â
methodcopâ:
â  something on your mind, mcnally? â   his tone was casual, but he knew her well enough to know when something was eating her up.   â  might as well get it out now â âcuz you and i both know how well you do with secrets⊠ â   he teased, flashing her a sideways glance. a playful smirk quirked at the corner of his mouth.   â  câmon â iâm a great listener!  â  //  @andyiismâ liked for a starter!
her thumbs rubbed her temples, she wasnât in the mood for his teasing, but she knew he was right. although she wasnât ready to admit it yet. âitâs just my mom. she shows up after fifteen years almost as if nothing happened. iâm not sure how to feel about that.â she hadnât spoken about it yet, unable to find a moment with traci. but spending almost the entire day quiet about it, she was starting to get agitated. âwell i know how i feel about it, and i want nothing to do with it. but still...â
coldunderfireâ:
âOkay⊠If my face is an open book, your face just tells me that itâs more than just him being good at reading people. His random guesses are way too accurate to be random. Mind reader. Definitely.â
âoh come on, thatâs ridiculous. if heâs a mind reader, i can see the future,â andy emphasised her disbelief by rolling her eyes. she was never the best at lying. âhe knows most people, itâs not that difficult to make guesses about people you know. besides, things like mind reading are super hero stuff, itâs obviously not real.â she couldnât even tell if he was joking, she hoped he was joking.Â

âNo one is that good at guessing. Itâs like heâs a mind reader or somethingâŠâ
âwhat? no... donât be ridiculous. tobyâs just good at reading people. your face mustâve been an open book,â andy managed with a slightly nervous snort. he completely caught her off guard.Â

âdonât have to tell me that twice, i couldnât agree with you more. problem is, thereâs no decent places near 15 division. so weâll have to venture out, a few minutes drive could get us some good coffee. if we have to wait anyway.âÂ

My muse just did something stupid that almost got them killed. Yell at them. Or, inversely, send me a & and my muse will react to yours doing something stupid that almost got them killed.
@andyiism
Toby thought running into a burning building without waiting for backup was his thing. Or at least between him and the people he cared about, heâd be the one with the tendency to do that. If it wasnât because he and Oz arrived just a few seconds behind the fire department, heâd probably follow Andy into the building. One of the firefighters was able to stop him from going and by the time he was able to free himself from the manâs grip, the fire was getting bigger and he was certain he heard the sound of the floor collapsing.
It was probably only a few minutes but it felt like forever to Toby. He didnât like the look of the building, the fire that could be seen out the windows. Some of the firefighters were inside, trying to find Andy and, he wasnât sure but it was probably Diaz, who were seen running into the building. Oz was keeping an eye on him, to make sure he wasnât going to try to get into the building, but was also keeping an eye on the building, waiting and hoping for people to come out the building, preferably alive.
Toby stopped pacing and faced the building before closing his eyes, ignoring Ozâs worried question. He saw six firefighters entering the building after Andy and Diaz, and he had no idea if there were other people inside the building. Itâd take a toll on his brain if he somehow ended up reading everyone instead of just one person but he just had to know that Andy was okay.
Before he could start reading, he heard a shout coming from the direction of the building. One paramedic and one cop was holding one man on their shoulders. Another paramedics ran to help the man since they were closer. Toby pushed himself away from Oz and ran towards Andy. A lot of things he wanted to say to her but what came out was âAre you okay?â after hearing her cough. He put one of her arms over his shoulders and directed her towards their rig, where Oz was already pulling the gurney out. He wasnât too surprised when she refused to get onto the gurney. But he insisted on her sitting on the steps on the back of the ambulance and not backing down about putting oxygen mask on her, completely ignoring her protest and her insisting that she was okay.
He walked a few steps away from the ambulance after checking her vitals, happy that he couldnât find anything worse than the smoke inhalation. Oz was now checking Diaz and taking care of another victim, after his partner made sure that he and Andy would be okay to be left on their own. âYou know youâre not invincible, right? The fire department was right behind you,â he said after a while. No one was and he wasnât ready to see someone he cared about died. Again.
The two of them were finally able to secure the man to the stretcher. He took a quick read on the numbers on the monitors. They managed to stabilize him and the numbers on the monitor, even though bad, they told Toby that the man wasnât in a critical condition. But heâd much prefer to get him to the hospital before his condition changed.
âOkay. But if theyâre not here by the time heâs secured inside the ambulance, weâll be leaving first.â Toby didnât mean to say the words so flat and without any emotion but his focus was on the man, who now had his eyes opened and, again, was trying to say something. âSir, can you tell me what happened?â he asked. Not for the same reason the cops would ask him, he needed to know if there was any other injuries, but it wouldnât hurt if he could find out the person responsible. He got quick flashes of a beating by a group of people. He couldnât see any faces. âDonât try to speak, sir. Weâll get you to the hospital as soon as possible.â
Oz helped him secure the stretcher before closing one door and then Toby heard his partner asking Andy if she was ready to go. Toby wasnât really paying attention to them. The numbers on the monitor suddenly changed for the worse and the man lost consciousness. âOz, we gotta go!â he shouted as he tried to stabilize the man, again. He heard the door slammed, didnât hear Andyâs answer. The next thing he knew, the ambulance was moving, sirens blaring, and he was trying to keep his balance as he administered a medication.
Right when Toby shouted to Oz that they had to leave Gail and Chloe arrived. Andy changed her mind and told Nick to stay with Gail and Chloe and help with taking the statements before she jumped in the car. To St. Lukeâs it was. She had no idea how the guy was doing, no idea how his condition was as she had no ways of communicating with either Toby or Oz, all she knew was that he had to get to the hospital as soon as possible.Â
After arriving, Andy parked the car just seconds before Toby and Oz came. She took notes of what was happening, the time they arrived, how the man was doing at arrival. Everything was important. Andy was told over the radio to stay with the guy until he woke up to question him. She had to stay at the hospital and find out who he was. âToby, howâs he doing?â Andy asked, keeping up with Oz and Tobyâs pace as they got the man inside to one of the doctors. Something about this guy seemed familiar, she just couldnât tell what.
Toby wasnât sure how long heâd been hitting the bag. His knuckles hurt but he kept going. He didnât have to think about that man when what he could think and feel was the hit he did one after the other. He didnât have to think about the fact that Andy went behind his back and talked to Michelle. Any other circumstances, he wouldnât be as angry as he was right now. He knew her intention was good but this was his past. This was his to share. It was supposed to be his decision who he shared it with. No one was supposed to force him to share but right now it was what it felt like. She was forcing him to share, when he wasnât ready.
He heard the door, heard Andy. âI know,â he replied but otherwise he was deliberately ignoring her as he kept hitting the bag as hard as he could. She ignored his request. A simple request, in his opinion. It was only fair. He increased his pace when he heard Andy coming in, trying really hard not to just turn and yelled at her. He channeled his anger to his punches because he didnât want to yell at anyone. Soon enough, he ran out energy and fell to the floor. He closed his eyes, trying to catch his breath.
âWhy?â he asked, once his breathing returned to almost normal that he could speak without stopping to take a breath after one word. âItâs not yours to tell.â
Instead of forcing him to stop and talk to her, she sat down, waiting for him to be ready to talk to her. Sheâd forced enough things on him for a long while. It took a lot of effort not to jump up when he fell to the floor. Right now she couldnât do anything he didnât want her to, she wouldnât do anything he didnât want her to. Something she shouldâve done earlier.Â
Andy took a deep breath before answering his question. âI thought itâd be easier if Michelle stopped pressing you. I only told her you shouldnât work the case, I didnât tell her anything else.â It would be a small consolation for Toby that she didnât tell Michelle anything else but it was the truth.
âI was trying to help, but I was stupid. I shouldâve let you tell Michelle. I feared she would talk you into doing it,â Andy explained. There had been multiple cases where Michelle had convinced Toby to do something he initially hadnât want to do. Andy had been afraid that the same would happen now, that Toby would agree to it even though it took such a toll on him. She could beat herself up for this, but this wasnât about her. Other than the damage sheâd done to his trust in her. âI was worried.. it wonât happen again.â
âMichelle, I gotta go.â He quickly ended the phone call, threw his phone onto the nearest chair just so he could go after Andy. He knew she wouldnât go far, not that fast and not in her current condition. But heâd much rather have an argument inside his apartment than in the hallway. Oz was on his way, being a great friend that he was, didnât ask much after Toby told him that heâd explain it later. Michelle needed some convincing to come alone but he thought he managed to convince her to do just that. He just hoped his abrupt end of the call didnât make her change his mind.
âHeyâŠheyâŠhey⊠Andy, wait.â He managed to catch up to her in five big steps, blocking her way to the door before putting one hand under her arm to support most of her weight, get it off her broken ankle. âI didnât turn my back on you. You need more help than one that I can give.â He tried to reason with her. Yes, he went against her wish. But he did it for her own sake. Her condition would get worse, at least from the medical stand of view, if she didnât get to a hospital. Her life would be in danger if the bad cops didnât get caught.
âListen to me. I get it. You donât know who to trust. Iâm not sure why you trust me that you decide to come to me. I would never betray that kind of trust. But I canât do anything anymore. I donât have my kit with me and you need more that the first aid kit box that I have. And if thereâs a bad cop out there somewhere, he needs to be arrested or you wonât have your life back.â He wasnât sure if she was listening to her. It had been a while since he tried to make an argument to anyone. He didnât usually try this hard. But he couldnât just let her go in her condition and let the men who attacked her got to her. âI called two people I trust with my life. You chose to trust me by coming here. Trust me now?â
Andy had hoped she would have exited the apartment before hearing Toby hang up the call, unfortunately that was not the case. By the time she was at the door, Toby was standing in front of her again, blocking the door. She was awfully stubborn, denying that Toby was right that she did need more help than he could offer her right there. She just couldnât help it, it was the one thing she requested and he couldnât give her that. Andy had been denied so many things before escaping, she needed to get some control back and being denied this it broke her.Â
âNo..â Andy tried, but she was too tired. Even with her determination, she wouldnât survive if she went outside again. Andy felt ridiculous for bursting out in tears, but she couldnât pretend she was fine for much longer. Sheâd pretend with her friends from her division, but she couldnât pretend she was fine in front of Toby. âI canât... I have to...â Andy started but her words were lost in the sobs.Â
âOk..â Andy eventually said, tears still running down her cheeks. She could trust Toby, that was why sheâd come to him in the first place. If he said he could trust the two he called, then she believed him. Besides, Toby hadnât known why she left, he hadnât known sheâd gone undercover. He couldnât have anything to do with it. âOk Iâll trust you.. But Iâm not gonna give my statement to anyone,â Andy managed between sobs. She needed to get back on the couch, sheâd been stupid getting up but she was scared and overwhelmed. She just wanted to sleep, she just wanted to sleep and not be scared about what would happen the next day. Not be scared that theyâd finally decided that she was useless, that they needed to get rid of her. She just wanted to make sure this wasnât a dream.Â
John took a deep breath, staring intently at the files in his hand. They were hardly that interesting, but it gave him something to do while carefully avoiding everyoneâs not so subtle looks.
He hadnât been âthe new guyâ in years, yet here he was. Starting fresh, or at least trying. The old saying that you can never outrun the past loomed darkly in his mind and he sighed. His thoughts were cut short as something, no, someone, collided with him.
For a moment he got ready to make a snide remark about observational skills, then he realised that shoe would fit him remarkably well and he closed his mouth. He took in the young cop in front of him, all smiles and generally pleasant attitude and turned her words on all sides, trying to determine if it was real or if she was going to add something entirely unpleasant to the end of her sentence. When he deemed it safe, he finally twisted his face into the aproximation of a smile and said: âJohn Kennex. And yes, that is me. You worked this case before?â he added, hoping to avoid any personal questions.
She was going to learn soon enough all about his past anyway. Might as well milk the niceness while it lasted.
âNice to meet you,â Andy said before taking a look at the file in the  detectiveâs hand. âI just came in, what is this case?â Andy questioned,  sheâd worked many cases but without any information she couldnât  know which one this was. She figured that she had worked the case  before, otherwise he wouldnât have asked her.Â
Before he could tell her, Traci came up to them and gave her a file.  Andy opened the file and looked through it quickly. A sigh left her lips  when she realised what the case was. âYes, I worked this case before.  Iâm surprised they keep me on it. This guy burned my apartment to  the ground,â Andy told the detective. Not something she was proud of,  but heâd find out sooner or later, might as well be the one to tell him.Â
âYou canât seriously think that youâll stay on full duty with a broken wrist?â Toby busied himself by packing his things in preparation to the walk back to where the car was parked. He just couldnât quite believe that she was thinking about work, or not wanting to be sidelined at work anyway, when she just fell from a significant height. He couldnât believe Andy downplayed the injury but if he thought about it, nothing new there. âYou fell from a height that youâre lucky to only suffered a broken wrist. I might give up trying to get cops to stay put for a long period of time unless theyâre hooked to IV lines, but Iâm not above asking my friend to make sure youâre not on the field until the cast is off and you can hold your gun properly to protect yourself.â
âThatâs not what I meant,â Andy sighed, this wasnât going how she had planned. This entire day was a mess. âI meant donât ask her to keep me from full duty unless her medical opinion is that I have to. I donât want to be stuck behind a desk unless itâs necessary,â Andy continued, she was aware that her health was usually not her biggest concern and that he absolutely hated that. She grabbed his wrist and made him look at her before taking a deep breath. âSorry, I shouldnât have reacted like that. I promise I wonât go against what Liv says. If she tells me to stay home, I will, especially if you say itâs really bad.â It took a lot of effort to make this promise but she was willing to make it and keep to it for him.Â
