Hello, been a while. Going to try and get one or two of these out a month, lately it's been a bit hectic. So, first off, I've made the transition from bartender to manager! Taking in a lot of responsibility and loving the experience. Been waiting for this to happen for a few years now, so glad it's happened at a great bar with a great reputation. Second, and most importantly! I'm going to be a dad. This is just awesome, myself and my wife are so happy and can't wait for our little man to arrive. As you can imagine, over Christmas was a bit hectic, as it always is in this industry. Unfortunately, more times than I can count, I had to deal with the one-time-a-year-drinkers. In this scenario, biting your tongue is an absolute necessity. It's easier said than done, but staying professional while dealing with drunk people is a must, especially when it's a Christmas party for a workplace, these people will always say they're in the right, even though they are one hundred percent wrong. I have needed to calm down so many parties and deny so many drunk people, it got out of hand. But part of our responsibility as bartenders, is to look out for the safety of ourselves and others, if that means cutting off someone before they hurt themselves and others around them, so be it. You might get some stick, people defending them and saying you're out of order, but at the end of the day, you did the right thing. When it comes to bar work, you can't take risks when dealing with drunks or under age drinkers. These people can cause you get a fine, and even shut down your business, in my opinion, I would rather deal with a complaint than take the risk of losing my job. Anyone who you suspect is underage, again, it's not worth the risk. I've not had many people take it badly, when they have their I.D. But one's who don't, I have been threatened and all sorts. You can never take it personally, any other bartender would do the same thing. Always stand your ground, no matter how argumentative the customer gets, it's the law. And it's not worth the closure of your bar. It's always great to give the best service you can, this will come off as professional and positive to anyone who is looking at your reaction to denying a punter due to them being too drunk or underage, if they do make a scene then they will look inappropriate and, if you stay professional, you will remain the one in the right. Give the best service you can, create a great response from your customers.
