Stirrings: Entry #1

“It’s been a while, hasn’t it?” the brunette girl smiled, swaying gently she stared out towards the sea. “Since we spoke like this, I mean.”

“Yeah... I really missed it, you know?” the mint-haired boy laughed softly, slowly turning to face the girl to his left. “It’s not often that we get to enjoy breaks like these. Not without consequence. Heck, Jeonghan-nim barely let me off today...”

The brunette girl covered her face in the sleeves of her oversized gray sweater, shaking her head at Yoongi’s words.

“You say that every day. Admit it, you just like the work.” she laughed, awaiting the mint-haired boy’s response.

“Fine, you got me. I love my job. What more can I say?” he grinned playfully. It was true; there wasn’t much Yoongi liked more than making coffee and laughing at Wonho’s clumsy antics, if he was being perfectly honest.

Beep! Beep! Beep!

Yoongi groaned at the discordant sound, hesitantly tearing his gaze from the sea to glance down at his watch.

“6:43... God damn it. We should get going soon...” the mint-haired boy sighed, dusting the sand from his knees as he stood up from the ground. He extended an arm towards the brunette girl, a light eye smile brightening his features as he spoke. 

“You ready?” 

Katie smiled at Yoongi’s words, placing her hand in his as he gently pulled her up from the sandy surface. Her eyes glimmered with the same playful mischief he had come to know and love over the years; a look of energy and hope, reminiscent of a new beginning. She laughed quietly as her sandals clicked onto the pavement, quickly turning back to face the mint-haired boy.

“As I’ll ever be.”

BANG!

Taehyung dropped his glass of rum and coke in shock. The glass shattered, brown liquid and ice spilling over. One of the servers came to clean the mess, but there is a second bang. Then, a third and that’s where it started.

Black smoke spilled onto the dance floor. The electric hum of the Doves’ quinques replaced the harmonious melody of Seokjin’s music. Ghouls and humans screamed and writhed in pain. Blood painted the pristine floor crimson.

A ghoul gets shot by a Q bullet, his white suit stained vermillion. The ghoul sniffed the air, looking for something sweet. Saccharine. Flesh. He grabbed a woman dressed in a plum dress, her shoulders exposed, and he bit into her arm. Ruby rivulets ran down her chest and it mixed with the tears of her pain.

Taehyung turned away from the sight, hands shaking and eyes wide from shock.

One of them is going to eat me.

His eyes met Katie’s, but they weren’t that shade of blue-green. They were red, encompassed by a pitch darkness. She had unleashed her kagune, a set of purple wings. The cells hardened and it shone like an amethyst.

If today was any other day, Taehyung would’ve thought that she looked stunning. Beautiful, even. But, the fear took over; the sight from earlier couldn’t be easily erased from his mind.

“Are you going to eat me?”

Katie’s heart dropped into her stomach, nearly stumbling over her dress as three discordant bangs echoed throughout the vicinity.

“It can’t be-” she gasped, turning her head as a man’s voice boomed from the balcony:

“IT’S THE DOVES!”

The entire mansion erupted into mass panic, blood-curling screams of agony reverberating across the dance floor as guests – human and ghoul alike – scrambled for their lives. A low growl escaped Katie’s throat as a pair of dark purple wings fanned out from her shoulder blades, her blue-green irises burning bright red in an ocean of black.

“T-Taehyung…?” the brunette girl stuttered, watching in horror as an injured ghoul sank his teeth into a woman wearing a plum-colored dress. The woman cried out in pain, sobbing helplessly as a stream of glistening burgundy fluid trailed down her chest. Katie glanced away from the sight, swallowing nervously as Taehyung met her crimson irises. Her eyes welled with tears as he spoke, the fear in his gaze cutting straight into her heart.

He’s afraid of me.

Katie took a step back from the tall boy, the hardened RC cells of her ukaku shimmering vibrantly underneath the dim neon light of the dance floor.

“I would never.” she spoke, her tone level and serious. The brunette girl hesitated for a moment, shuddering as the half-eaten woman gasped out one final cry of anguish.

“You know that, right?”

“Yeah,” chuckled Taehyung, smiling as Katie sat down on his lap.

“We can start by braiding your hair~” he mused as his long fingers ran though chocolate strands. “Oooh, you hair’s actually quite soft,” he hummed.

As Taehyung’s fingers deftly moved along Katie’s hair, he explained the steps. “So, you have three sections of hair,” he began, silk ran through the tips of his fingers. “And you just cross one section over to the middle and do the same to the other side.” He finished off the braid with a hair tie that had a small, pink bow. “I’m sorry, I’m really terrible at explaining things,” he chuckled.

A brief silence passed as Taehyung admired his work, and more importantly: Katie. “You look cute, though.”

Katie smiled as Taehyung’s hands ran through her hair, listening intently as he spoke.

“I see…” she hummed, nodding silently as she observed his movements. The brunette girl turned her head slightly as the tall boy apologized, a flustered expression crossing her features.

“Ah, you’re fine! And, th-thank you…” Katie blushed brightly at Taehyung’s compliment, burying her face in the powder-blue sleeves of her oversized sweatshirt. The brunette girl lifted her head from her hands after a beat, turning back to face the tall boy behind her.

“So…” she began, taking a few lavender strands in her hands. “Like this?” Katie inquired, twisting the three strands into a small braid. She finished it off with a small blue hair tie, sliding a tiny floral hairclip between the strands. The brunette girl leaned back for a moment, her eyes sparkling with excitement as she viewed her work.

“I-I did it!” Katie sang, throwing her arms up in victory.

“Do you like it?”

“Good! I’m glad you’re open to the design ideas. I promise it’ll look amazing. And you can just stand on here.” Juli moved away from her desk, leading the new client to a small daïs. With a flick of her wrist, measuring tape unraveled and she began to hold the length along Katie’s figure. 

“So. Is anyone escorting you to this event? A boyfriend perhaps?”

“A hundred?” Katie repeated jokingly, laughing to herself quietly as her cheeks flushed bright red.

The brunette girl stepped carefully onto the small platform, watching curiously as a ribbon of measuring tape unfurled forth from Juli’s hand.

“Oh, a-an escort?” Katie stuttered as the silver-haired stylist held the beige ribbon to her waistline, the familiar image of soft lavender highlights flashing in her mind as she spoke.

“I mean, he’s not exactly my boyfriend… But yes, I’m going with someone.” the brunette girl smiled shyly, her blue-green irises darting around the room as she rushed to change the subject.

“Uh, d-do you get commissioned for these types of events very often?”

Short heels clicked down the hall as Lolli strolled towards the elevator. A long day was now behind her. She scratched her head and yawned just before the faint pulse of a bass tapped at her feet. “What the…” she murmured, stopping in her tracks to listen more intently. She recognized the vibrating chord progression coming from the waiting room: Ascension. Who…who the fuck is jamming to the Gorillaz in my waiting room and didn’t think to invite me?

Lolli charged into the waiting room, ablaze. “Chanyeol, I swear, I’m gonna beat your a– Oh, hello.” Lolli’s petite frame fell into a bow at the sight of the other girl. Brown hair, soft eyes, a sweet but cool disposition. She didn’t seem threatening. “Appropriate? Probably not…Fun? You betcha.” Lolli chimed. “So, no, please, dance away. You don’t actually buy the whole ‘rest in peace’ thing, do you? People don’t want to sleep when they leave this shit hole They want to party.”

Lolli crossed her arms and leaned against the wall. Her eyebrow quirked and she gave a slight smirk. “With Taehyung, hm?”  Is that dork finally getting laid? “Well, nice to meet you. I’m Lolani. So…” she trailed off to give the room a quick once over. No one else would come in at this time of night. “You know all of Gosoon’s work?”

Katie laughed at the mortician’s words, amused by her response.

“Right? Might as well go out with a bang.” she giggled, watching as the ebony-haired woman’s lips curled up into a smirk.

“Nice to meet you too, Lolani. And I’m afraid not…” the brunette girl paused, glancing nervously around the vicinity.

“All I know is that this is where the meat comes from.” Katie continued, speaking in a hushed tone as she returned the mortician’s gaze.

“Would you mind telling me more?”

Taehyung groaned again as Katie threw a playful smile. Her feet padded excitedly across the floor as she returned with a lavender box, it oddly matched the highlights in his hair. She set down the box and put her hands in his hair.

“I’m sure you’ll do fine,” he said reassuringly.

Minutes pass and Katie let out a groan of her own, which elicited a small smile from Taehyung. She leaned into him and he wrapped an arm around her to pull her close, smile widening at the sight of Katie’s cute pout. How adorable.

“Maybe we should.” He rest his head on hers as a silence passed, enjoying each other’s company.

“You know, I could teach you how to braid hair.”

Katie sighed quietly as Taehyung wrapped an arm around her body, a slight grin tugging at her features as he rested his head upon hers.

“Really?” she smiled, glancing up at Taehyung as he spoke. “That would be great!” the brunette girl sang, sitting upright as she reached for the box of hair clips. She scooted back onto the tall boy’s lap, gently handing him the lavender box as she adjusted her position.

“Where do we begin?”

Katie has mixed feelings about the subject. She likes the idea of having a family of her own someday, but she doesn’t know how to feel about raising a child in such a dangerous and unforgiving world.

I don’t know if I would call it a gift, but a mystery admirer once paid for Katie’s drink at a ghoul bar. Yoongi’s still trying to figure out who it was.

Yes. She and Yoongi both feel as if they were forced to adapt to human society, due to the CCG’s attack on their families. It was no longer safe for them to just ‘be ghouls’; they had to assimilate if they wanted to live.

Thus, they began eating with utensils, carefully planning their ‘meals’, and otherwise repressing their ghoul urges during their day-to-day lives. It didn’t bother Yoongi all that much – on the outside, at least – but it took Katie some getting used to.
