This is an art journal collage I did as an example for my class. It was simultaneously relaxing and guilt inducing. I enjoyed playing a tetris game and creating a mood. I did not enjoy feeling guilt over not being prolific, by "cheating", and not working with high brow materials. These are all perfectly fine endeavors that have been perverted by art school and capitalist, hustle society. Life is too short to live a performative existence. I often tell my students let things be ugly. It sounds counterproductive but really it's trusting in the process. We all want to put those finishing touches on but we have to make sure that we build the structure and composition first. If I may, Life is often the same way. This drawing took a lot from me. I challenged myself to explore the space, leave imperfections, and really play with the charcoal. I've been staring at it for over a month unwilling to admit it was finished. Because it's not perfect, not polished, the movement is seemingly haphazard. But it's what I set out to do and really make a story for these women. Working with these three women has been unintentionally representational of what it's like to live in 2020. I'm so grateful for their love, compassion, and steadfastness. I worked alongside my students today in a lesson. A lesson about being free of judgment, of analyzing and reacting to your day, and expanding your artist's toolbox. For most people with an art school background, being free of judgment seems beyond reach.
