the dressing room is such a liminal space for male nudity. you’re expected to drop trou without a care in the world, often in full view of other men. this can be embarrassing for many guys who are shy about their bodies or bashful about an act as vulnerable as trying on clothes.
is my ass too big for these trousers? should i lose some weight in my thighs? when did I start looking like my dad? all these questions and more flood the mind.
then there’s the the truly humiliating accidents that happen every so often. the ones that few men are unfortunate enough to experience or fortunate enough to witness.
did the door lock all the way? is this curtain secure? is this privacy partition stable? are there even walls at all? what happens when a man lost in preoccupation with his own body is exposed to the other men waiting to change or try on their own clothes.
these fully dressed men gawk at the exposed gentleman. rapt in fascination either by his body or the sheer humiliation of the situation. each one grateful it isn’t their exposed body on the proverbial auction block.
then in a moment it’s over. the door is shut once more, the curtain readjusted, the partition returned to its upright position. everyone pretends as if nothing happens and proceeds with the totally normal act of using the dressing room.
