End of rant. Thank you for listening.
Some good ol’ frustration over count nouns. :-)
Jo Boaler, from the GSE at Stanford University, has just opened her free online MOOC titled How To Learn Math: For Students.
Last summer, she did an amazing course about learning mathematics for teachers and parents (she’s running it again this summer, but it’s $125) and it...
My students are always surprised when they find out...

I have tattoos…
I play video games.
I have non-teacher friends. :]
Badging and Global Project-based Inquiry Reinvigorate K-12 Teacher Professional Development.
We are excited to share the news that VIF International Education, the leading provider of global education programs for K-12 schools, has launched their badge system this week:
VIF announced on Tuesday that teachers anywhere in the world can now earn digital badges as they learn to effectively integrate global project-based inquiry into their core instruction. The VIF learning center, a social learning platform featuring the Global Gateway professional development (PD) system for educators, makes it possible.
The Global Gateway system, developed from student indicators used in VIF’s network of global schools, cultivates the knowledge and skills required to teach using a global, project-based inquiry (PBI) approach and incorporate 21st century tools effectively. Educators become PBI gurus as they progress through PD modules, and they earn digital badges that represent their accomplishments and provide evidence of participation in a professional development sequence grounded in global curriculum and instruction.
The above video provides a brief introduction to digital badging and the Global Gateway system:
"Typically with PD, the evidence of your professional learning is often a paper certificate that only you or your administrator sees. With digital badging, educators are able to display their professional learning with more detail to a broader audience."

A Global School
Let the world know, I'm excited :)
This upcoming school year is going to be a HUGE change for me, and I am beyond excited :D I will be moving from being a high school math teacher in a traditional high school to an elementary 5th grade teacher in a not-so-traditional setting: a NC VIF Global School. In essence, this platform for a school encompasses international and global education, helping children see how big the world REALLY is like outside of their own home towns. I will be spending the summer months getting ready for this :)
Short, sweet, and to the point. Let's get it started :)
My Children
Tread lightly, my children, Be cautious. Be watchful, young children, Be nervous. For the road that you travel has seldom been known To grow smoother to walk as you stumble alone.
Speak softly, my children, Be quiet. Be muted, young children, Be silent. For the words that you say have seldom been known To bear passions of speakers long after they're gone.
Move swiftly, my children, Be quick. Be stealthy, young children Be slick. For the actions you take have seldom been known To bring fortune to those who proceed as a drone.
Use judgement, my children, Be able. Be steady, young children, Be stable. For the hopes that you keep have seldom been known To guide naive youths back to the safety of home.

Random Thoughts 12/15
I got my nails done yesterday. Really relaxing, actually. While staring at my fingers, I remembered a scene in The Illusionist where the chief of police asked about a good magic trick to learn. So the magician gave him a ball and told him to hold it up to his head, and then he put his hands out. Then, the magician would guess which hand it was in.
The trick is to have them hold the hand up because blood will rush from the hand, thus making it a paler color and easier to determine which hand the ball is in.
That won't work for those of us with a darker complexion.
If I traveled back in time to the era in which the Illusionist takes place, what would they think of my fake nails? And what would I have to do if they started to fall off and I couldn't get back to the future?
Like I said, random thoughts.
The Perks of being a Math Teacher
Well, here's the best part about math. I can do it anywhere, like chewing gum. While listening to music, watching a movie, "conversing" on the phone, eating dinner. To me, there is absolutely nothing difficult about planning whilst doing other things. Even writing lessons plans is simple because all I have to do is figure out how to apply what I'm doing to the math topic I'm teaching. Reasonable because it's easy to relate to.
Tonight begins my 25 days of Nightmare Before Christmas marathon, where I watch a scary movie every night until Christmas. A waste of time? I think not... I shall use those two hours to make answer keys ;) Like what I just did there? Yeahhhhhh.
I will never forget these lines again.
Love this in a heartbreaking way.
A gem.
