Stitches in Time
It was as though a light switch flickered off. One moment, there was noise and the next, silence, and Yunho was suddenly there, standing mere centimeters away. I jumped and my feet sprang back reflexively like a prey animal. Changmin (and to some extent, Yoochun) had made pointed comments before regarding the way we ‘dropped in’ on them, but I never realized how disconcerting it was until I could no longer hear the flapping of their wings.
“What are you doing here?” I blurted out in a panic. To say he had caught me off-guard would be an understatement. My pulse thrummed hard and it was as though my newly acquired energy was fueling my emotional reaction. He was still Yunho, but I couldn’t feel the unique soul beneath the human mask or the comforting warmth of his presence. When they took my Grace from me, they took him too.
(I wasn’t ready to see him yet. I wouldn’t be ready to see him, ever.)
“W-what do you want with me now?” I asked, glancing over his shoulder and seeing the hunters and the demon frozen where they stood. It never bothered me before, seeing them like that, up until now. If Heaven deemed my punishment was living, what else could they take from me?
I stared at her fright, confused, and immediately I felt ashamed. Of course she would fear you now. You've destroyed the very self that she was created as. You've hurt her worse than any living thing ever has, and ever will. Surely you weren't expecting anything different?
Hesitant, I shifted my weight from one foot to the other, looking at the ground near her. I knew what I had to do, but I could not fathom a proper way to start. Never in my life had I been so lost.
"Nothing, I-" I closed my mouth and opened it again to speak, but no sound came out of it. I took a breath, looked up at her, and began again.
"I wanted to say that this" -I gestured vaguely at her corporeal body- "was never my intention. And I need you to realize that. I knew of the plans that the heavens had for you, but I never expected it to materialize. I thought, with me being this close to you, they wouldn't dare raise a finger at you. But..."
"Whether you decide to ever speak to me again is up to you. I will respect whatever decision you make about... us. At this point, it is the least I could do."
strike one: escape
From the outside, Yoochun's house looked like it was plucked straight out of a quaint countryside village in 17th-century New England. The helper angels sure did some splendid work with the visuals. I pondered whether to simply materialize in front of him inside and whisk him back to Earth, but thought better of it. Must show common courtesy. At least in heaven.
I lifted the ornate brass door knocker to the front door and struck twice.
/chuckles/ Time-traveling would make everything easier, wouldn’t it? But that is precisely why the heavens have kept its secrets away from the angels. Giving us jargon about it messing with alternate universes and infinite time paradoxes.
No need to apologize. I deserved that, and more. I’m not actually sure whether they will take my grace. At what lengths must I go for this to be a possibility? If it ever comes to that point, I will not stand to have my grace taken from me.
You are kind to offer help, but there is nothing I need from you now. I will be on my way to meet your brother.
But- .. okay but..tell- just..go see Yoona before you go, please? How can I easily contact you again? Without .. bad-mouthing you? Or will you listen to me from the start now (/looks kind of smug)
/bites lip to keep from laughing/ I'll listen to your prayers from now on. And... I will drop by Yoona. And hope for the best.
(/looks up at surprised) oh so you decided to show? perhaps bad-mouthing is the only way to get your attention though .. do you have any idea how long I’ve been calling out to you? and not just today?..
I thought you cared about her; why put her through that? why betray her? ..
You need to get Yoochun back. I don’t care what it takes; but give me my brother back, Yunho. My only other option would be to make a deal with a crossroads demon but that would be unpleasant for us all considering heaven has things in store for me, right? .. (/tries to stand strongly on one foot and not to come across as afraid and awkward while leaning for support and not to put pressure on the other leg)
Because I didn’t think they would actually go through with the punishment, didn’t think it could happen so suddenly, didn’t think…
Betrayed… I would have betrayed someone either way. And there are more rules to this game that you or I know. If I could go back, though… /shakes head/
I will see what I can do for your brother. I will be clearly over-stepping boundaries by bringing him back, but I don’t want to be controlled as a pawn anymore. /looks up and squints/ We’ll see just how much power they have over me.
(/opens and closes mouth several times) You’d..why don’t you..can’t you time travel?..or…something? Does- does she know you do actually care? (/bites lip) you should tell her if she doesn’t.
I’m..sorry for..bad-mouthing you but..it did get your attention, right? (/scratches head awkwardly then sighs) Yunho you could..would you get into a lot of trouble? Would they take your .. grace, too? if you do this? or do you think you can escape them and..you could..join us you know? .. once you got my brother back of course.
Is..is there anything I can do to help?

Screw you Yunho. I hope you lose your grace. I hope you choke on angel air. I don’t even know. I thought you’d be different. I guess Yoona was the only angel with actual feelings. Yet you managed to have ruined her as well. It was obvious you liked her so why the fuck did you let her fall; why are you not answering! Why are you pushing me towards a decision that everybody will hate me for.
…..
Whoa there, human, take it easy. Do you generally bad-mouth anyone who doesn’t answer your prayers?
I’m not going to deny that her fall was my fault. But some courses of events are meant to unfold whether or not I approve of them.
What… decision are you considering?

Stitches in Time
From a distance I silently watched Yoona slowly easing herself into the human world. For perhaps the first time, I truly understood the younger brother's potential as something more than an attention-greedy nuisance. In the end, it was Changmin who guided Yoona into the new world, Changmin who held her hand ever so gently and Changmin who was there for her, as a friend in her utmost time of need.
But as relieved as I was for Yoona, at the same time I felt... oh? what is this alien emotion? ...envy. I was envious that I was not in Changmin's position.
Well, why wasn't I?
I descended into the warehouse, immediately extending a reality warp to make it seem as if time was frozen for two of the three humans present. Changmin and Kyuhyun would not notice my arrival, nor did they have a necessity to. My reason to come down had nothing to do with the hunters.
I had no course of action but a simple motive: to mend the delicate fabric of the relationship between two souls, if only a little. But one thing was clear- I could not stay idle any longer, lest my festering guilt consumes me whole.
22/100 pictures of Yoona’s Ethereal Beauty
Ashen Plumes (Pt. II)
A choked bubble rose in my throat and escaped my lips in a high, keening sound. Later, I would identify this stain in my head as despair and the pain in my chest as anguish, but at the moment, I was caught up in a torrential flood of human emotions I couldn’t identify, only that firstly they made me feel and secondly that they made me feel as though (and I would learn this term later too) I wanted to vomit.
That doesn’t help me, I wanted to shout in his face. I wanted to beat my fists against his chest, and then use words to cut him and make him hurt as badly as I was hurting, but my limbs were too heavy and there was a wolf ravaging the pit of my belly, clawing away my anger until nothing was left.
Of course Yunho didn’t tell me anything. He was just following orders. That’s what it all came down to, in the end. I should have expected this, I should have known from the very start that it was nothing personal.
(But you promised you wouldn’t hurt me.)
“What do I do now?”
The torrent of angry words and verbal weaponry I wanted to unleash was instead replaced by a simple, whispered question. I sounded weak and pleading, which I was, but I’d never wanted Yunho to see this. But what could I do now? There was nothing left.
Suddenly, it was as though the world was spinning all around me as I stayed constant. Is this how humans feel all the time? I thought vaguely, wondering if I should feel panicked. No wonder they’re so slow, how do you function like this?
“You said…you said you cared about me,” I mumbled as I rose to my feel, slowly. I felt like the Little Mermaid who had turned into a human, and every step was ten-thousand needles in my feet. Would I turn into seafoam and disappear too? No, that was silly. Life and death was never that easy.
Please, help me.
“I believed you.” I said as moisture gathered in the corner of my eyes, blurring my vision until Yunho’s features had disappeared into a one colored blob. “Now…now I don’t know to what to believe anymore.”
Yoona's torrential downpour of emotions startled me, as I momentarily forgot about who she had become. No, not who, but what. Yoona is still my angel Yoong. Humans could be so expressive with their feelings, that I have known from the beginning. But to see the unsuppressed pain etched on her face, the manner by which her tone of voice rose and feel as freely as the wind, and the way her firey coal eyes bore into my own... this was all too real for me to grasp.
I fidgeted my weight from side to side, suddenly feeling nervous. But what did I need to be nervous for? I slightly shook my head and began. "What I am about to say now has been kept from you on purpose, in hopes that you would never have to know. But now that there is no need to keep it a secret anymore...
Yoona, you had been kept under close scrutiny of the heavens' Higher Order for the past thousand years of your -extended leave- on Earth. We purposefully remained lax in directly controlling your behavior in hopes that you would willingly come back to serve the heavens. Save the occasional angel sent down to note your earthly engagements, I was confident that you would return on your own.
Centuries passed. The Others were becoming more and more distraught at your continuous wayward behavior. In the end, I had no other choice but to accept giving you a test- a final mission to determine your eligibility for your wings.
This was where I had come into the picture. In order to portray this test as mission of importance, I came down to Earth. And the mission's goal was simple- to prevent any mortal harm to the hunter brothers, Yoochun and Changmin. The mission soon became even simpler with the older brother put into a coma.
I was not to interfere with the mission in any way, as it was your mission and yours alone. You were one of the most capable seraph I have ever had in my garrison, and I had no doubt that you would complete the mission with success.
But harm did come to Changmin. He was in grave danger under a possessed kitsune's claws, and despite our calls for you, you did not arrive on time."
I became quiet. Where were you? Why didn't you respond to him? Why didn't you respond to me? I looked at her pained expression, my fingers itching to hold her, to rewind time back a thousand years. "Yoong... there was nothing more I could do." I stared blankly at the ground, unsure what I expected from her now.
Ashen Plumes (Pt. II)
I flinched when I felt his touch, as gentle and warm as it was. The fear disappeared as quickly as it had arrived, but my hands wouldn’t stop shaking, even though I knew it was Yunho and no one else. I don’t want to see you right now, I wanted to bite out, to scream. Leave. You…you did this this to me.
But my voice was stifled and I could hardly breathe much less speak. The words I held back would have been unleashed to hurt him, not because they were true, and I knew it. The very physical pain of what had happened was like a noose tight around my throat, but his presence, even in my misery, was like a safety blanket I never wanted to—
His presence.
With no little amount of horror, I realized then that I hadn’t felt him approach. I couldn’t feel him, not even now when I was trying, even though Yunho had always shone so brightly I’d never had to try before.
I can’t sense him anymore.
It felt as though my stomach had bottomed out and I felt as though I was falling again—even as I sat there, immobile. I’d been so focused on what I’d been saddled with—new sensations and new feelings and new emotions—that I hadn’t given a single thought to what I had lost.
(My wings. I had six of them.)
Needles and pins were traveling up my arms and legs and my breath grew increasingly labored as my vision blurred with tears, but I’d never felt more hollow on inside than I did now. I was human now. The chasm between the two of us couldn’t be any wider. Two angels feelings what we’d felt was taboo already, but an angel and a human? Beyond taboo. And I would remember this loss for the rest of my shortened lifespan.
Truly, this was the absolute worst hand they could have dealt me. I should have known—Heaven never played fair.
Go away. Don’t leave me. I hate you. I’m so scared. I never want to see you again. Please don’t go. You did this to me. I don’t know what to do. Please don’t leave me. Please stay. Please don’t hate me. I still…
“You knew,” I whispered at last, broken. “You knew what they were going to do to me, and you didn’t say a word.”
But I didn't know.
Her current state was loud enough evidence of my failure to protect the closest I had to a companion, and her words only made me quieter with shame. Her fragile human body mirrored my own inadequacy to keep her from harm's way. The more I gazed at her, the more frustrated I became.
I wanted my frustration to align in a single direction, like a beam I could aim at someone, destroy them in blame, and be over and done with it. But who? Not the kitsune, he did not consciously choose to hurt the hunter. The hunter, he was on the brink of death with no other choice but to put Yoona on the spot. Not the heavens, no, they were simply following along protocols for angelic behavior. They were all unwitting victims with no idea where their independent actions would come to cause. And then there was me. Yoona's mentor and instructor, the one given the responsibility to guide her towards becoming a servant of Heaven. I was her guardian angel.
There could be only one answer.
I did know.
Perhaps not consciously, but somewhere deep down I must have known that I was filtering out all those little hints that pointed out to this inevitable fate. Yoona was never the perfect angel to the heavens that she had been made as. I let this happen because I wanted it to happen. I wanted Yoona to be imperfect, to have the freedom that she had desired - that I had desired - at all costs. I used Yoona just as those before me used Sooyeon.
And all because the heavens longed for this perfection, for happiness, as if happiness is a state of being. But it is not so. Happiness is a vector. It is movement. Like her own wings' momentum across the skies, joy can only be defined by the speed at which one is moving away from the pain.
Certainly the world could reach a place of absolute bliss at the expense of a few, which is no doubt what the heavens have long since strived for; but the moment we arrive, the moment we stop moving, joy would become as hopeless and as stagnant as perpetual despair.
Happily ever after is a curse to endure.
"...yes. I knew. I had cast a blind eye to the blaring signs until it was too late." I looked away from her. "Yoong... you should not have been the one punished."
Ashen Plumes (Pt. II)
Unfortunately for me, the fall itself didn’t kill me. Descending from Heaven didn’t entail a great height as much as it did a great distance. Even though the journey itself was never-ending, even as I felt the last of my Grace disappear into nothing, at the end of it all, I was still alive.
(What a pity, what a pity.)
The first thing I felt was pain. It crawled up and down my arms and legs and all along my back, snapping ferociously at the junctures where my wings had extended. The sudden realization of loss sent a different kind of pain crawling, consuming, through my chest.
(My wings, my beautiful wings…)
There was pressure building at the base of my throat and I remembered that humans had to breathe—but when I inhaled, a hurt I’d never known before blossomed immediately into another, almost physical, pain and my breath was accompanied by a sharp, stilted sob.
I felt dizzy and weak. I couldn’t even summon the strength to rise to my feet, so great was the pain in my head and my chest. I had fallen straight into the form I had kept for the last few centuries, but without any of my powers, I was as powerless as I felt.
(What do I do now? Where do I go?)
Moisture gathered at the corner of my eyes and then escaped in torrents. It was as though there was a hand wound tight around my throat and a boulder sitting atop my chest and all I could do was sit there, hurting. I’d never known fear before this moment. Of course, I’d never cried before either.
(Yunho knew. Yunho knew.)
Yunho, who’d held me and kissed me and made promises to me, who I trusted more than I had myself, who had always favored me since the beginning of time—he had known all along. So many times I’d seen him, so many opportunities he had to tell me that they were going to rip my Grace from me and he hadn’t said a word.
“Help.” The word came out a whimper, but I had nothing left—not my pride, not my wings, not even the one being in the universe I thought I could trust without reserve. The sound trailed into the night and the field remained quiet and empty. “Please help me.”
Go to her. A step towards her distant figure in the middle of the field, a word of comfort. Invisible shackles around my ankles and a catch in my throat stop me. Tentative, timid, ashamed. Never in my existence have I ever felt so small, so incapable.
I appeared behind her, where the shadows of the now fallen wings were still visible to my eyes. Wordlessly, I lightly traced where the wings had connected with her being. Where my fingers touched, sparks of light transferred between the two of us. Let me digest your pain, let me dissolve it away.
But the results of my actions were as futile as I had felt. Her physical pains were the least burdensome among her sufferings, and it was exactly what a coward would make as his goal. Because it was easy to reach it. Because I will not fail. Not again.
Raging self-loathing overtook me then. I wanted to scream, to pound the earth until there was nothing left of it, because nothing else mattered anymore. I wanted to scream and scream and scream
And instead I circled my arms around her waist, her fragile human waist. And I opened my mouth and whispered in her ear, like a child first learning to admit his mistakes, "I tried. I tried and... I failed."
I could never ask for forgiveness.
With wide eyes he looked up at Yunho. “She isn’t in trouble because me now though, right? I..it’s my own stupid mistake I should of thought things through..I..will be more careful I promise” he whispered quietly. Not wanting Yoona to get into trouble just because he had been so reckless.
Changmin almost laughed when he got an awkward pet in return. But still didn’t let go when Yunho brought both of them to sit up straight again. The news of Jaejoong still being in town made him feel better, too. Afraid that he might of thought that Changmin didn’t show up on purpose.
“Thank you; really..I..guess it might not mean much to you..but; to me it does. Thank you for bringing me back, for healing me.” slowly he dropped his arms and tumbled back on his feet. “Will..will you wake Tao up? And tell him that..I’m sorry? I know I’m asking a lot but you..he..kind of is there because you probably did something to him and it wasn’t his fault; he shouldn’t have to suffer a severe headache because I had been stupid” he mumbled.
Finally getting back on his feet. “Please make sure he gets back to the hotel; I don’t want the Siren to catch him again..” he said last before giving Yunho a big smile; in appreciation for everything then slowly pushed his heavy body out of the bar in quest to find Jaejoong.
"It's not your fault," I whispered back, and just then the unmistakable tearing of wings filled my ears alone, and the anguish of fallen grace nearly ripped my soul into a billion pieces. My fault. All my fault. I let go of the hunter, nodded wordlessly and stared blankly at the sleeping kitsune as Changmin's muffled voice drifted towards me as if I were in some distant world. need to wake up Tao... I'm sorry... asking a lot... I'm sorry... wasn't his fault... I'm sorry... shouldn't have to suffer... I'm sorry... Yoong. Keeping my composure as resolute and as empty as ever, I turned around towards Tao and instantly relieved him of any physical injuries. Once he awoke, I informed him of the Siren's trickery and the resulting near-death that had occurred moments earlier.
"And Changmin wanted me to tell you that it was in no way your fault. Your logic and emotions were tampered with beyond your own control. I have alleved a good part of his own injuries, so you do not need to worry about his health."
I paused. "He also wanted to say... he's sorry. He is sorry for putting you in this situation, for being careless, for leaving you alone back there." But an eternity of sorrys could not undo the damage.
Time stopped. The universe suddenly started to spin and I could not stay there any longer. Holding the kitsune's hand, I transported the two of us back to the hotel. And then I was gone.
“If you wish it weren’t you then why did you save my life?” he whispered. Oh god he was going to get hell over him when Yoochun found out. What was he going to say? Sorry I was thinking about Jaejoong so I forgot the mirror; left Tao on his own after perhaps finding the target; and got caught of guard? He was so going to get punched in the face for this.
He bit his lip madly before frowning. “But aren’t you Yoonas … you should know where she is, what if something happened? Aren’t you worried? I know you angels don’t feel but you both seem to be .. different” he tried sitting up once more and groaned slightly. “Yunho why is heaven so hell bend on keeping me alive?..what purpose do I have? and am I going to keep scars off this?”
Did he really want to know? Probably not. And Yunho was probably not going to answer his question either but he could always try. Pondering for a moment a sudden thought popped up. “Jaejoong, Jaejoong can you; I was supposed to; he; ..” a flush took over his ears and he wondered why he it was so important to him after only being brought back alive. Well what else was he supposed to do? Dive into depression? He was rather grateful he was back instead. He just desperately needed someone to hold. Even though Jaejoong was probably not the right person for that no matter how much he would like to believe he was…
So instead he suddenly flung himself over the Archangel. The man did just rescue him after all.
"Because someone had to save you." The partial truth was easier to escape from than a complete lie. "I have mentioned that Yoona is currently being tested by the heavens, correct? Changmin, you are a critical component to her succeeding."
"Yoona's dropped attendance today and the fact that I had to substitute in for her is going to take several marks off her record." Just how vital today had been, I did not want to think about yet.
"Ah... that crossroads demon?" I furrowed my brows in concentration for his location and was about to respond when the unexpectedness of Changmin's hug threw me on my back. Eyes growing wide at the physical human contact, I regained my bearings and (awkwardly) patted his back.
"It's fine..." I mumbled, picking myself up to a sitting position and lifting Changmin along with me. "Jaejoong is still in town. For some reason, he still hasn't left. If you hurry now you can catch him."
