you sat on the swings in the park not far from your house. it was just a typical weekend, you even brought homemade sugar-cookies with you to eat. it being the start of summer meant you finally wore skirts again, the heat being a contributing factor. your outfit consisted of a pink ruffled shirt, a plain white tennis skirt, and pink ballet flats.
you smiled softly as you opened the container of sweets, swinging your legs at the perfectly orchestrated day. you were alone, happy, and enjoying yourself for the first time in a while.
you finished one cookie before you felt a small pebble hit the side of your head. assuming it was just wind, you ignored it, continuing to eat. you ignored every single rock until the fifth one came.
you looked up towards its direction to see a few kids from your school. your smile dropped and you felt that heavy pit of worry drop in your stomach. you picked up the container, closing it as you began to stand up, all while the group of kids began approaching closer.
in a split second you ran off, abandoning the container as they chased you. just as you reached the entrance, you tripped on the wooden plank used to separate it, falling down face first into the bare concrete. your knees were scraped and your hands torn. you just laid there for a moment, on the of verge of bursting into tears.
your classmates stood above you, watching your pathetic state. they hit you, kicked you, threw rocks at you, and even smashed the discarded cookies and poured the crumbs in your hair. you tried using your hands to cover your face just to have it stepped on.
“the hell is going on here?” a voice asked, causing everyone to stop.
unable to see the face, you hoped it was an adult or maybe another person from your school who came to protect you. you were desperate at this point, you didn’t care who it was, you just hoped it was someone with the intention to help you.
you didn’t really know who you expected to come.
but you definitely didn’t expect rafe cameron.
you blinked and you saw rafe staring down at you with that signature smirk.
your eyes widened and you tried crawling away, blood painting the concrete.
you were stopped abruptly as one of the kids grabbed onto your ankle, pulling you back. you tried resisting, holding onto the ground to no avail.
“whatcha’ guys doing? making fun of my fun of my favorite pogue without me?” rafe asked sarcastically, pouting mockingly as you sat there purely terrified.
“they really did a number on you.. didn’t they y/n…” he said condescendingly, feigning care.
you backed farther away from him as he got closer to you, the kids laughing as rafe continued.
“do you want my help?” he asked, his face going completely serious, and his voice slightly softer.
you stared at him in disbelief before whispering an almost inaudible, “yes,”
he reached his hand out, picking you up to your feet while he shooed off the other kids.
“go home.” he said firmly, looking back to see all of them dispersing. all of them except one.
rafe walked closer towards the boy, their height difference becoming horribly evident as rafe sized him up.
“whats with the change of heart rafe? i thought you hated her! do you got a crush or some-“ the boy spewed right as rafe clocked him in the jaw.
he fell to the ground as rafe stood over him with probably the worst mean-mug in the world.
“go home. don’t embarrass yourself further, i’d hate to see you get the absolute shit beaten out of you.” rafe said to him, watching as he ran off.
you stood there like a deer in headlights, watching the exchange. rafe looked at you, cracking his knuckles before walking towards you. you instinctively began backing up, it was pure reflex upon seeing his face.
“whats your deal? i just helped you dummy.” rafe said, tilting his head in confusion as he reached a hand out towards you.
he walked with you to your house in comfortable silence. you still kept a small distance from him.
suddenly he hit the back of your head, making you lose your balance and trip forwards slightly.
“what did i do..?” you asked, brows furrowed and voice cracking.
“let someone else put their hands on you. you gotta learn to defend yourself.” he said firmly. “but you hit me all the time..” you responded to him. “thats different, im allowed to do that.” he said, crossing his arms as if it made complete sense.
you arrived at your house and as normal, rafe greeted your father standing on the porch.
your father saw as you came home with all those scratches, grabbing you by the back of your neck and pushing you into the house. not without thanking rafe for keeping his daughter out of trouble, of course.
