The story behind The Laundress.
This is so good. -Emily
I find that hard to reconcile with how 18th century dresses had boobs practically hanging out of them. Maybe the chest wasn’t as sexualized as the ankles were back then…
I have a dim memory from back in high school… I think someone once told me that breasts were no big deal back in corsetry-and-necklines-down-to-there days, they were considered a food source for children and that’s it.
But ANKLES. Oh, GOD. ANKLES. The ANKLE was connected to the LEG, which connected to THIGHS, which hid a woman’s SECRET FLOWER. The ankle was the gateway to the secret flower, so it was considered quite a stirring sight!
I have never considered that “leg bone connected to the ankle bone” song as a sexy tune before but

Little fact about French because I just learned that
The accent circonflexe (^) exists in French words to replace the “s” that no longer exists but used to be there in older French.
For example: fenêtre used to be fenestre
It is still possible to see the “s” at times in family words like “défenestrer”.
knowing this, « être » becomes much more regular :
être → estre (es, est, sommes, ê[s]tes, sont ; ser-)
some French derivations become clearer :
fenêtre → défenestrer → L. fenestra
fête → festival
hôpital → hospitaliser (E. hospital, ise)
intérêt → intéressant (E. interest, -ing)
ancêtre → ancestral (E. ancestor, -ral)
arrêt → arrestation
épître → épistolaire (E. epistle)
some English cognates become more obvious :
hôtel → hostel (E. ‘hotel’ borrowed from French)
forêt → forest (tipp to remember ^ goes on the ‹e›)
bête → beast
côte → coast
honnête → honest
pâte, pâté → pasta, paste
quête → quest
enquête → inquest
tempête → tempest
vêtements → vestments (ie. clothes)
baptême → baptism
sometimes, the acute replaces the circumfex for phonetic reasons :
ḗcole → escole → L. schola (E. school)
ḗtranger → estrangier (E. stranger)
ḗtudier → estudier (E. study)
dḗgoûtant → desgoustant (E. disgusting)
dḗbarquer → desembarquer (E. disembark)
rḗpondre → respondre (E. respond)
rḗpublique → L. res publica
Also, where « c → ch » (eg. cantare→ chanter) :
château → castel (E. castle)
pêcher → L. piscare
and « w → gu » (eg. war→ guerre ; warden→ guardian) :
guêpe → E. wasp ! (this is my n° 1 favourite cognate)
bonus etymologies :
tête → L. testa
fantôme → L. phantasma (E. ‘phantom’ borrowed from French)
Pâques → Gk. pásxa → Am. pésaḫ (E. Paschal)
Also just be aware that the circumflex has some other uses too, like distinguishing « sur — sûr » or « dû » and the vowel quality in « âge »
Where was this post when I was doing A-Level French! This is actually a really interesting language change called “syncope” (the loss of a medial segment within a word) and what makes it even more interesting to me is that not only was the -s- dropped post vocalically and largely before voiceless stops, but that the circumflex was (unnecessarily but coolly) adopted as an orthographic marker of the lost -s-. Even more interesting is that syncope usually occurs in vowels. I love this.
New Year’s resolution ideas for students
Finish all your schoolwork by 11 pm each day
Limit yourself to one cup of coffee a day
Get at least a B in all of your classes (or set goals for individual classes)
Stretch for 10 minutes before bed
Read a book each month for leisure
Get at least 7 hours of sleep every night
Spend less than two hours on social media a day (or some other time limit, depending on where you are now!)
Journal every day
Leave for class 5 minutes earlier than you need to
Listen to podcasts or watch documentaries instead of binging Netflix or watching YouTube
Get at least 1 hour of exercise a week
Only spend money on things you really need (not just things you want)
Finish papers at least a day in advance
Spend 30 minutes a day on self care
Wake up an hour earlier than you currently do every day
What are some of your resolutions (if you have any)? x
i’m in this picture and i don’t like it
life is good…just back in london after spending xmas in the country with my boy and his family. so grateful for all there is in my life rn✨💛✨
my grandma’s sunflower bathroom featuring my thinking journal, a cup of hot coffee, and a chapter from narnia. my favorite childhood classic.
141119// transcribing a 30-minute-interview today and the only way I’m surviving is with chocolate cake. The interview is for a project related to one of my exams.
i think so much about that quote “a child weaned on poison considers harm a comfort” by Gillian Flynn because thats basically female socialization in a nutshell. We’re taught to hate ourselves and our bodies so self destruction looks pleasant and romantic.
Quimper in Brittany/France and the best cakes and teas.
It’s the season for oat milk iced coffee content ✨
