What Will Become of the Boy (Rooftop) - Sarah's Song (my version!!!)

Don't tell my boss but I just spent the last hour of work writing and recording a song for Sarah shh!

I believe it was @make-friends-with-the-rats who said, what if the instrumental of Rooftop was actually part of What Will Become of the Boy?

I've thought about this for a long, long time and today was the day inspiration struck. I picture this coming in after Sarah finds Denton's article in her drawer (thanks, Les) and remains one of the last ones with any hope.

I also wanted this to be a bit about her, not just Jack. She's the one making the next move. So the opening verse is more about her wondering if she can step into the role of the brave one now.

This was my first attempt at writing and recording new song for a musical and I really enjoyed it! I dedicate this to the entire newsie fandom. Thank you for inspiring me and keeping the newsie-verse alive. Y'all do more than you know :)

I love that the Duane Street History Site is something that exists because you find things that never would have occurred to you before

I think my favorite thing right now is the fact that there's a librarian on the list of employees, meaning that the reading room that was on the second floor was probably bigger and more organized than I thought it was

And that's really sweet, isn't it? That they really went through all of the trouble to set up a reading room for the boys and hired someone specifically to take care of it so the other employees could focus on their work instead of being overwhelmed with extra tasks

And maybe the librarians who worked there were a little like the librarians we all know and love. The ones who set up workshops to help people learn how to read, the ones who help kids with their homework, the ones who do everything they can to support people who need help

Maybe it's just a little wishful thinking on my part, but I really do love the idea of the newsies, both the ones we know and love from the movie and the ones who really existed, having as many people as possible looking out for them

les jacobs who marched for women's rights. les jacobs who helps more than he can afford to during the great depression. les jacobs who has seen two world wars and had advocated against both. les jacobs who insists on helping to fight for civil rights even when he's old and grey. les jacobs who learn that the fight for equality is never truly over. les jacobs who documents his time as one of the last newsies, especially as one who was helping lead the strike. les jacobs who outlives all the newsies he knows. les jacobs who dies mid cold war and mid civil rights movement. les jacobs who watches as the civil rights movement take notes from the newsies books and strike and protest for their children, the same way the newsies had.

- wiesel keeps his cudgel “close at hand” when the boys are just?? trying to buy their papers?? jack calls him pussycat

- wiesel is physically abusive to morris, hitting him and knocking him to the floor

- davey: “we were taught not to lie” jack: “i was taught not to starve to death in the gutter! who ya gonna believe?”

- action of jack looking at the jacobs’ apartment is described as “a home. to him the taj mahal. food on the stove, sheets on the bed. home. it hits him hard.”

- mayer and sarah are raging socialists!! mayer reads from eugene debs’ work

- jack says he can’t sleep in the bottom bunk (hammock) and needs the top one . horse & wagon sound trigger a nightmare of michael’s death. jack wakes in a sweat and secretly goes to look at his family photo for a while

- jack describes michael as “this kid, like les, but younger.” later, when jack scabs, les hits him in the mouth and draws blood; a cop retaliates against les, whose head strikes a wagon wheel, triggering a horrifying flashback for jack of michael’s death. he throws himself on his knees, picks up les, and carries him. les’ blood covers his new clothes. he pays for the doctor.

- “jack would rather die than take his pants off”

- francis malcolm sullivan. snyder tells him he’s “already responsible for the death of his brother”. snyder wants to put him in the refuge until he sees fit; jack begs to be sent to the adult prison instead

- when jack is taken to meet up with pulitzer the guy just grabs his face; seitz holds him still as pulitzer examines him

- when david sees jack as a scab, he hits him in the face. jack doesn’t resist. he just says “i can’t afford to be a kid no more”

- jack (intense, aggressive) i ain't lying. i just ain't telling you the truth. i know my brother's dead. i know what's real. (walks away, stops) it’s easier sometimes to make up a family then to have a one.

- jack, lying: “being alone don’t scare me.”

- “there’s a grin on jack’s face as he dashes for the family he will not leave behind”
