THIS is what i'm talking about!! the trials!! they straight up tried kid blink and dave simmons for (allegedly) scabbing! like, it was THAT OFFICIAL! i will forever be grateful to newsies for bringing the newsboys' strike into the public consciousness because it is legitimately one of the most inspiring historical events to me. if a group of poor, underprivileged, undereducated CHILDREN in 1899 could start a union, so can you!

walk with me, talk with me, and picture it: specs juma, newsie. (tw: period-typical racism ahead)

specs, to put it lightly, doesn't have much going for him when it comes to selling tactics. he's eighteen, he doesn't have the little kid act. no girl will accept his flirtation if he tries to flirty route. and he's not injured and is healthy looking, there's no pity for him.

but his worst disadvantage? his skin. no one wanted papes sold by a colored boy.

sure, the civil war was over, he was in no danger of becoming someones literal slave, but they were only thirty years out, most everyone who had been alive before the war, was still alive now.

he had his patrons, loyal customers in black neighborhoods that bought from him everyday, but just once, he thinks, it would be nice to sell the headline closer to the lodging house instead of having to walk miles just to sell more than five measly papes.

despite this, he keeps his job because there are no better options, and i can't help but think that this is why specs is such a people-pleaser. jack asks him to go to queens? well, he's the leader so he could turn the others against him, so he listens. katherine asks him to show jack's penthouse? well she's courting jack and jack is the leader so obviously he has to listen

i just can't stop picturing this poor boy (literally and figuratively) walking on eggshells around everyone because what other option does he have? very few factories will hire a black kid and it's not like he has any family to stay with while he finds his footing
