If I drop the leash my service dog picks it up and puts it back in my hand. She would be devastated to be “liberated” in any form.

Okay - I haven't been active here for lots of reasons but I've decided to be real and let ya dudes know the main one. I've struggled w/ mental illness my whole life - including now an eating disorder. I just spent some time in a inpatient psych ward due to a Klonopin overdose - and now I'm doing an outpatient eating disorder program. Don't freak out ya freaks, I'm staying vegan. I BELIEVE I can recover while staying vegan. This is because I don't crave any non-vegan foods - therefor I'm not really restricting them. HOWEVER, I believe a lot of people can't recover from EDs as vegans. And that's FINE. You need to put recovery and healing first. And veganism CAN BE restrictive. Anyways, I may avoid this blog a little more. Part of healing is not thinking about food 24/7 - and "vegan tumblr" includes a lot of hipster (albeit great) food pictures and recipes and lots of "health talk" which can personally lead to obsessive thoughts and anxiety. But I do want to talk about recovery and being vegan on this blog. I ALSO want to talk about how you are not a bad person in the slightest if you decide to go omnivore in anyway during recovery. Just an update ✌🏼 Stay safe!

Vegetarians and vegans celebrating the tick borne illness that makes people allergic to red meat like that’s the only thing the disease does, like tick borne illnesses can’t kill you, like people don’t have other illnesses that make it difficult or impossible to survive on a vegan/vegetarian diet, like tick borne illnesses don’t disproportionately impact the poor and rural and people who can’t afford health insurance so don’t get treatment quickly enough and have to live with chronic conditions the rest of their lives.

I don’t eat meat and for some reason everyone thinks I’m going to go berserk if I see them eating meat. No friend eat what you want when you want, it’s my choice not to eat meat just like its your choice to eat it.
The majority of my family isn’t vegan (just my sister and I) but for some reason I grew up on a lot of vegan food and I’m pretty sure that’s kinda strange for a non-vegan household.
For example, my family never ate meat-based sausages. We only bought vegan sausages, so I’ve actually NEVER liked normal sausages, hotdogs, or bacon.
We also only ate dairy free ice cream. Mainly because we’re lactose-intolerant. I basically grew up on Toffuti Cuties icecream sandwiches... Also my mom was obsessed with toffuti based cheesecake.
I feel pretty privileged in these regards because making the switch to veganism was really easy for me. And my family never questioned buying vegan products because that is what we have always done.

Why I Refuse To Support PETA
As most of you know, PETA (People for Ethical Treatment of Animals) produces lots of sexist, racist, fatphobic, and even ableist ads. Their ideologies match, unfortunately. They are incredibly unreasonable, too, and they effectively want to remove companion animals from human contact entirely.
Members of PETA have done the following to me.
Attempted to take my service dog’s leash
Threatened to take him away
Sent me death threats
Threatened to euthanize him out of “mercy”
Claimed that I am a “slavedriver” and “active participant in the speciesist h*l*caust” (Ah yes, please tell the romani-german-native girl that she’s basically a Nazi. Good idea.)
Left threatening voicemails on my phone.
Scared me so badly that I had to move house at one point
Grabbed my service dog
Tried to pry my hand off of my service dog’s harness
Threw paint on a faux fur-lined coat I was wearing (the paint got matted in my hair to the point where I had to shave my head)
Speaks openly on their hatred for service dog handlers.
Adding:
Their “Adoption” services are a complete lie. Do not bring an animal to a PETA facility or allow PETA volunteers or employees to take an animal. THEY WILL KILL IT.
Their own documentation shows that they euthanize approximately 90 - 97% of all animals they take in, on a yearly basis. This includes everything from seriously injured/ill animals, to healthy puppies and kittens.
They support Breed Specific Legislation, and call for the mass extermination of all “Pit Bull-type dogs”.
if there is anyone out there who doesn’t know this - this is really important. PETA kills and terrorizes animals. They do so for their own propaganda and in turn, profit. There is nothing ethical about their treatment of animals let alone other human beings.
Their position is, supposedly, that animals are equal to humans and as such use really ableist, racist, and wildly inappropriate metaphors that undermine real human oppression and suffering. Often just for shock value. If they applied their principle, then they are basically saying that mentally ill or struggling and homeless humans should be put to death on mass.
In addition to all of the above, they also promote the idea that dairy products cause autism.
Plus, they harassed Steve Irwin’s family while they were grieving his death. They’re pretty terrible.
The Humane Society of the United States and the SPCA are where it’s at, if you want broad, effective, and ethical animal rights organizations on a national scale, though you can be really effective seeking out your local no-kill shelter or wildlife refuge.
Advice/info from my vegan doctor
🌿vegans are overall more sound of health than non vegans and are less prone to all sorts of health issues like high cholesterol, cancer, heart disease, osteoporosis, etc
🌿the only way to get (bad) cholesterol is from animal products OR when your own body produces it (your body produces both good and bad cholesterol!)
🌿VEGANS DO NOT NEED TO TAKE VITAMINS! vitamins are extremely unregulated, and it’s so much more likely that you will take a vitamin that has too much of something and will poison you or cause other health problems rather than it helping you. Unless you have an extremely limited diet or a precondition, you are almost certainly getting everything you need! Vegans usually have a MORE balanced and nutrient rich diet than non vegans. The average person, vegan or not, doesnt need to worry about vitamins. But if you feel off - see your doctor first before taking any sort of vitamin supplement.
🌿studies have shown that if you could have one food to survive off of for the rest of your life, it would be SWEET POTATOES. Why? They are one of the most nutritionally sound foods in the world. The Okinawan people have a history of living 100+ years on average and a huge staple in their diet was sweet potato! Also, aside from all the other vitamins and nutrients found in sweet potatoes, they are packed with beta-carotene which can help prevent cancer. A study showed that people who ate enough beta-carotene per day (found in 1/3 of a sweet potato) were almost 70% less likely to develop breast cancer than people who didn’t consume as much beta-carotene. Additionally, you should NOT just go out and buy a beta-carotene supplement! Vitamins and nutrients you get from supplements are not the same as when you absorb the nutrients from food. Beta-carotene supplements have actually shown to make it more likely for people who smoke to develop lung cancer… Summary? Throw out the supplements and vitamins and start stocking up on sweet potatoes! They are versatile and can be made sweet or savory (you can seriously season them any way you want and it’s delicious, last night I had curry seasoned sweet potatoes), can be used in a huge variety of recipes -like vegan Mac n cheese- and can also just be microwaved for a quick meal! (Pro tip: a cheap, fast, filling and nutritional meal is a microwaved sweet potato with a side of seasoned beans (always rinse beans first before cooking))
I will add more to this as I continue to see my doctor!
What about B12 and D3?
I occasionally track my micronutrients, so I know I’m easily getting in all other vitamins/minerals, however I rarely meet my D3 requirement so I take a supplement.
B12 shouldn’t be an issue to most vegans due to fortified foods, nut milks and nutritional yeast (mainly). But what about raw vegans or strictly whole-foods vegans that definitely don’t meet the B12 requirement?
And many non-vegans are vitamin D deficient as well. My whole family took vitamin D supplements way before any of us went vegan because we live in a cold climate.
I’d be very to interested to hear what your doctor has to say about these two vitamins! Their info on sweet potato is super interesting!
I have finally found a protein smoothie that I LOVE!! I hate protein powder, that's a fact. I've tried so many brands, but I dislike all of them plain. I can mix them in banana fruit smoothies, but fruit smoothies are too filling for me and too sweet. And I hate tasting the protein powder in my usual spinach+berry+kale smoothies. But I had the genius idea of mixing COFFEE with vanilla protein, and voila, protein frap! So here is the lovely recipe - it's about 250 calories (add a little less and you'll get 200, a little more and you'll have 300)! None of the measurements have to be exact, I just estimate. Vegan vanilla protein powder - 1 scoop Espresso - 2 shots (or about 1/2 cup of coffee) Banana - 1/2 banana (preferably frozen) Hemp hearts - 1 tbsp Cacao nibs - 1 tbsp Non-dairy milk - 2/3 cup Ice - 1/2 cup You can switch this up in many ways! You could use chocolate protein as well, or add some cacao powder for a mocha flavor. Hemp hearts don't add any taste, just some more protein and healthy fats. I added the banana for sweetness, but you could use dates as well (or stevia drops).
My friend brought up Freelee and Durianrider and we started cracking up laughing for 1 hour about mono meal, carb the fuck up, refined sugar loving (cough Durian cough), raw-till-death vegans. But mainly just fruit mono meal vegans. And how Freelee can eat 51 bananas in a day. And how she went 2 months eating only mangos or something. Just imagine a person rationally thinking its healthy to live 2 months off of pounds of mangos a day. What the fuck. It's so morbid. It's HILARIOUS. And then my mom walked in and we tried to explain to her who Freelee was. Her comment @ us was "vegan humor is strange" but then she became seriously worried about Freelee; "Who is this girl? Is she physically sick? Is she is obese? Is something mentally off with her?" ANYWAYS thanks for the good laugh Freelee.
