Old-School Is Better
Mean: who are you?
TIWWCHNT: I’m you but we swear now
Dumbledore spent years digging into every single detail of Voldemort’s life to figure out how to kill him. Nothing on Nagini ever being anything other than a snake. The narrative itself explains the relationship between her and Voldemort as being due to her being a Horcrux. So Rowling can fucking miss me with that ‘I’ve been keeping this for 20 years.’ This is another bullshit retcon she’s trying to pass off as having always been there.
And even if she had, the fact that she thinks it’s a good idea is horrific. We all come up with bad ideas, but usually we pitch those and come up with better ones.
This is all just so mind-numbingly racist and sexist I can’t even…She managed to turn a horror monster into a slave. Neville’s grand moment of getting the Sword of Gryffindor, proving his bravery and killing the serpent is now frigging horrific. He kills an innocent woman who inherited a curse and was enslaved by wizard Hitler.
I
None of it is canon. We all knew when The Cursed Child came out that she had completely lost the sense of her own universe. This is just more of that. Harry Potter consists of 7 books, which were adapted into 8 movies. That’s it.
By now most people have seen the new trailer and the news about Nagini being a human. You can read an interview with the actress here. She’s excited about the role, more power to her, but the whole thing bugs the hell out of me because it feels more like JK changing canon in an attempt to make Fantastic Beasts link more with Harry Potter. So, Rant Hat on now.
My Issues:
Voldemort hates people. He doesn’t TRUST people. So if Nagini was a human, he would not have the same relationship with her that is described in the books. He’s closer to Nagini than he is to anyone else because she’s a horcrux. Not because she’s a snake. Dumbledore clearly states this. Nagini is literally linked to Voldemort on a level no one else comes close to, aside from Harry, who retains his own agency because he’s human.
There’s no evidence that Voldemort had Nagini prior to GoF. If she had been in his thrall prior to the night he tried to kill Harry as a baby, it wouldn’t make sense for her to be there with Wormtail in GoF. How would she have gotten there? Are you telling me she randomly hung out in one spot, like Voldemort’s wand, waiting to be picked up later? No, that makes no sense. What DOES make sense is that Voldemort befriended her while hiding in Albania, or picked her up on the way back to England with Wormtail. Albania doesn’t have any large species of python, but whatever, she could be a magical species. This would also explain her venom, as pythons are not venomous, though personally I like to think Voldemort looked at a constrictor species and was like “not scary enough” and magically pimped his serpent, because he’s so fucking extra that HIS snake would have to be BETTER.
The timeline is bonkers. Voldemort is born in 1926. Fantastic Beasts 2 takes place in 1927. The earliest we see Nagini is in Goblet of Fire, in 1994. Claudia Kim, the actress playing “Nagini” in 1927, is age 33. So if Nagini-human was age 33 in 1927, then she would be 100 years old in Goblet of Fire.
My first thought after seeing the new trailer was that they were going to make Nagini an Animagus, perhaps one with total amnesia (or a memory charm) who forgot she was human. That would at least explain how Voldemort could overlook the fact that she’s human (maybe he didn’t know). But in the interview, Claudia states that Nagini is suffering from a “mysterious blood curse…eventually, she’ll become a snake permanently.” Ok, whatever. That still doesn’t change the age issue. If we apply the same rules as for an Animagus, she would be aging the same rate as a normal human. Wormtail is a rat for years and his human form ages at the normal rate. The larger pythons only live 25-30 years. Witches and wizards canonically seem to live longer than muggles, though this is probably due to more advanced medical care. Nagini still wouldn’t be a spry snake OR woman at age 100 (103 by book 7).
In conclusion, none of this makes any sense and I’m getting more and more annoyed with JK’s own disregard for canon. She has an immense universe she’s created with many interesting characters. Give them their own shit to do. Not everything has to tie back to Harry Potter’s personal story. Please stop.
The only good thing about the Nagini reveal is that it means Severus Snape was violently murdered by a woman.
just tbh the fact thor: ragnarok was shunned by awarding bodies bc of the belief they hold that superhero movies aren’t as credible or hold as important a message as straight dramas is actually indicative of how outdated the Hollywood critics are.
Thor as a trilogy was a huge argument against hereditary monarchy as a political system, with Ragnarok being the spectacular climax of that. It was a call out to imperialism, showing how any great powers haven’t got there without blood on their hands, and you can’t cover that up if you want to grow, you have to face the truths of your past. It also demonstrates a major flaw in hereditary monarchy, which is that sometimes the best leader is not a part of the descendency - in this case Heimdall.
The film also ends, with the hero a man without a home. His home literally destroyed by tyranny and hellfire, he and his people looking for somewhere to seek refuge. Somewhere new they can call home - an interesting position to put your hero in, in a world where refugee is to many, a dirty word.
It also has an interesting commentary on the treatment of veterans when you look at Valkyrie. She gave everything for her land, lost everything for her land, and her land gave her very little in return. Which is tragically a reality many veterans face after returning from war.
But it wasn’t a heavy movie, all these socio-political commentaries were happening, but the film was a laugh a minute from the moment it started. The action sequences some of the best Marvel have ever produced. The visuals of this movie were extraordinary, again some of the best Marvel have ever produced. The soundtrack was finally memorable, something Marvel hadn’t really managed up to that point.
Everything about Ragnarok is awards worthy, and if it had been anything but a superhero movie it would have been nominated for them, and Taika would have without question been nominated for best director. So uhh, let me know when the awarding bodies are dragged into 2018 with the rest of us yeah?
Hmmmmm….been thinking about how Marvel erased the scene that dealt with Valkyries sexuality despite Tessa Thompson (the actress who played her), Taika Waititi (the actual director of the film) and even Chris Hemsworth (the leading man of the series) pushing for it be kept in……..Hmmmm…Love that good ole home of phobia
I feel like one night taika downed seventeen cups of coffee and stayed up until 4am watching avengers crack videos until he just stopped for a moment and thought to himself, ‘this is it, this is how I’m going to make ragnarok’
Taika Waititi is hot

Just imagine, in an alternate universe Taika Waititi directed the live adaption of Avatar: The Last Airbender and we got the trilogy we deserved.
