dean woke up in the middle of the night, feeling an empty, cold spot beside him. he opened his sleepy eyes, immediately sitting up in bed. his eyebrows narrowed, and his mouth twisted into a grimace. sam wasn't there. dean remembered sam falling asleep next to him, arms around his neck and all that shit...but he wasn't here.
"i love you more than anything—"
dean nervously glanced around the dark motel room. he slowly raised his hand, tucking it under the pillow to instinctively grasp the gun he kept there—but he found nothing.
he whispered, his gaze settling on a strange, dark figure in the corner of the room. when it moved, he saw that piercing, green gaze and the disturbingly inhuman movements.
"fuck! sam! you scared me—"
"i'm sorry, dean. i'm sorry. i didn't mean to scare you. i want to be good to you...i love you..."
sam choked out through his tears. he moved again, slowly walking to the edge of the bed. his eyes were fixed on his older brother, his lower lip trembling, and his breathing ragged. he was crying. he was crying, and dean didn't know why.
"hey, hey, don't cry, sammy. everything's okay, right? lie down, okay? lie down next to me."
"no! you have to love me! love me as much as i love you!"
"sam! calm down! can you—can you calm down and go back to bed—"
"i can't. i'm sorry, dean. i love you, dean. i can't come back. something bad will happen, dean. i have to be here and i have to watch over you—"
"sam...please, come back to bed..."
a piercing scream tore from sammy's throat, ringing in dean's ears. dean covered his ears, closing his eyes tightly. he didn't know what was happening. why was sammy acting like this? why was he suddenly ruining everything?
the soft rustle of the sheets made dean open his eyes. sam lay next to him, his face almost buried under the blanket.
"i love you, sam. you're my little brother. i'll never stop loving you."
