Frania Shelley-Grielen, MA, MS shared a post on Instagram: "Not what you think. Or maybe it is. Some dogs will muzzle sniff initially as part of greeting behavior and then there is the necessary sniff to the nether regions for all sorts of information, much of what is still not understood. But the dogs do understand and that circling and sniffing of backsides is a communication that exchanges and influences information about each dog. Anxious dogs may demonstrate relecuctance to muzzle sniff but not pass up the back end sniff. Linear walking or leash walking behind another leashed dog is often advised in neutral dog introductions and for those dog reactive dogs, following a stranger dog at a distance from behind can be a useful step in desensitization.
