someone: how do you cope with your mental illness?
me:
me: well first i don’t
Things that did wonders for my mental health:
having enough sleep and a fixed sleeping and waking time ( at least on the weekdays)
starting my day with gratitude (things to be grateful for: being alive, having a body, a mind, a soul, health, family, friends, food and water, safety, a roof over your head, your education, your job, your free time... seriously there is so much to be grateful for) and praying for my family’s wellbeing
any type of movement - it can be as light or as intense as you’d like it to be: stretch in bed, hop on your yoga mat, go for a walk, go to the gym...
showering = instant rebirth
diligently doing your skincare routine
nourishing your body. no counting calories/ no restricting. feeding your body all the nutrients it needs to function
making a to-do list in the morning
journaling at night
reading before bed
doing a monthly habit tracker
having enough time to get ready in the morning and not rushing
checking in with your loved ones weekly
listening to podcasts - especially motivational and uplifting ones
learning something new everyday - never underestimate the power of those 4- 8 minutes educational videos on youtube
doing yoga
allowing myself to make mistakes

who cares: reads books in class instead of listening, attention span of 5 seconds when studying, generally starts studying in the day before, lost all their new fancy pens by week 2, still somehow gets A*, sometimes starts arguing with the teacher
i can and i will: motivated af, watches legally blonde 24/7, big dreams and aspirations, bullet journal is goals, sometimes very forgetful but makes up for it through very hard work, wants to figure out everything by themselves before asking for help
hello my name is stressed: signed up for 10000 extracurriculars and can’t get out of them now, time management god, hates the glorification of all-nighters but stays up until 6 am anyway, has the highest expectations regarding themselves, needs a hug
aesthetics TM: desperately wants their notes to look perfect, spends all their money on stationery, loves to doodle, PUNS, is great in one specific class, always tries to help their friends with homework, study playlists!!!, can still easily feel overwhelmed and lost but they try and that’s enough
what: has lost their motivation somewhere along the way, has no idea what’s going on, “there was homework”, messy notes and messy life, really wants school to end, hates the education system, has no idea what they want to do after school tho
how to be content as a student
1. define who you want to be, not in terms of academic goals or your future necessarily, but what type of person do you want to be?
2. set goals that align with your personal standards, don’t ask for help with these because you are the only one that has the answer
3. stop comparing, you’ve defined who you want to be, now become, you want to be you, not an imitation of another
4. stay focused on yourself and your own personal goals, do not become bogged down in other peoples academic problems unless they genuinely ask and need for your help
5. celebrate every accomplishment, because no matter what the paper says, you did it, and everything you complete should be a reason for celebration
6. learn to be proud, it’s part of becoming content with yourself as a student and as a person
7. brag oh my god brag! let the world know how excited you are about your accomplishments, it doesn’t matter if your accomplishments are up to standard with the social norm, if you’re proud of it, let the world know
8. understand that being a great student does not have a definition, there is no definition to what being a great student it
9. maintain your motivation to complete your goals
10. understand that success is self-defined
Designing a character arc
There are different forms a character arc can take. And different ways to create one. But if you’re struggling, I have a few tips on designing an arc for your character.
1. Where does your character start?
Where are they in life? What are their ambitions and dreams?
What are their main traits?
Most importantly: what is their biggest character flaw/shortcoming. For a character arc, this should be something that can be changed or that shows potential.
What is the one thing keeping your character from being the best they can be? What is the unrealized potential of your character?
We’ll call this point A
For example, let’s say your MC is very childish and self-centered
2. They should end at the opposite of point A
No, this doesn’t mean an angry character should suddenly be a meek little lamb.
It means that your character has managed to work on that flaw, has overcome their biggest weakness. Has fulfilled their potential.
Take point A and make it shinier, healthier, better, nicer etc.
Let’s call this point Z
Going with our example, this would mean that the character has learnt to be mature when they need to be and has come to be considerate of others’ needs.
This is where your character should be by the end of the story. This is the goal of the arc.
3. Which events/plot points will help your character get from point A to point Z?
Your character can’t just spontaneously transform from A to Z. The development needs to be believable and organic.
So, what can happen to the character to bring about this change progressively? Who can they meet? Do they fall in love? Lose someone important? Find a family? Go through war? The possibilities are endless.
The first event is usually your inciting incident (Point B) , which takes the character away from their regular life and comfort zone. Something around them has to change before they can start to change.
The change shouldn’t occur in a single event, however. It should be gradual.
In our example, the character could be exposed to the suffering of others, meet a compassionate love interest, be forced to take responsibility etc.
4. Breaking point
Most good books have a character breaking point. The point where your character has lost everything and is down in the dumps.
The breaking point presents the final choice: give up or go on
This should be your character’s final point before they are transformed into Z. (point Y if you will)
Overcoming rock bottom is what will eventually make your character the best they can be.
5. Big picture
So, eventually your character arc should look like this: A > B (inciting incident) > event C > event D etc > Y (breaking point) > Z
This is a very simple way to design an arc. Obviously, you can create one that’s much more complex. But I hope that these basics can be helpful.

My university tips
Read your syllabus! Trust me, everything you need to know about the class is in the syllabus including midterm and exam dates (most times)
Make sure you know where your classes are. The last thing you want is to get lost in the 10 minute slot in between your lectures (been there)
Buy textbooks from upper years! Trust me you save sooo much money
Do not impulse buy stuff you don’t need
Write stuff down! Your brain retains things more when you physically write it down. At least write down important concepts if you don’t want to rewrite things
ASK QUESTIONS! Whether it be to the prof or the TA it is always good to ask if you need clarifications or have a question
Reading ahead is always a good thing, if you have free time go ahead and read, you never know if you will suddenly be swamped with work
Reading your notes or cue cards on the bus is always a good way to get in some study time
Do your readings. Trust me you will regret not doing them
Find a good study method/note taking method that works for YOU! Not something you saw on tumblr that was aesthetically pleasing and worked for someone else. Pretty notes will not get you good grades
This isn’t high school. A routine and certain habits that worked for you then will not work for you now. Adapt your new routine and habits to what will help you succeed and do your best whilst staying healthy
Bring your chargers (phone, laptop) with you everywhere!!
The library and other study spaces are your best friend
STAY HYDRATED
Mornings are so productive trust me. Just make sure you go to bed at a reasonable time to make up for waking up early
MEAL PREP!!!!! Trust me, it does take time yes but it will save you from spending money and gaining unwanted pounds
Lastly, no degree is better than another get that gross mentality out of your head
schools have stairs so you can throw yourselves down them
