special thanks goes to joy, kerri, paige, luke, and my parents. i wouldn't have been able to see a cliff wall to climb without you guys. huge thanks to everyone else who has helped me through this journey, through darkness and pointing skyward toward the light.
i was in a rough spot on tuesday. thankfully, i was able to hang out with kerri and her friend jason, and was able to distract myself from what i nearly did earlier that day.
wednesday rolls around, and i go to my weekly meeting with my therapist. i tell her everything: attempted suicide, twice, within two weeks.
she’s required to send an ambulance and have me check into a psych ward.
i checked in. it was about 3:00 PM. i had no idea what i was getting myself into: i just wanted to talk to someone, anyone, about these issues i’ve been having lately. instead, i was met with the cold, hard bureaucratic elements of a tightly run ship, ran by folks who seemed to not really give a shit about any particular person. nurses ran around and took vitals, nightwatch ensured that folks didn’t do anything stupid to themselves or each other, and psychiatrists are stretched thin across about twenty patients. if you imagined ER but with head-sick folks with all kinds of psychological ailments all in the same room, you get the psych ward.
i think all i wanted at that point of realization was a dosage of zoloft, a prescription, and my discharge papers. ASAP.
6:00 PM. i finally talk to the staff psychiatrist. i tell him the truth about everything, the carefully constructed mechanizations in my head that lead to me to conclude that suicide was a way out, the contexts in which these thoughts were able to brew, and why i realize now that all of that is bullshit, that really, the best remedy was for me to join my friends on wednesday for trivia and that my remedy is to be around my friends.
i was placed on overnight suicide watch. they expressed that it was for my own good, that they can reevaluate and choose to hold me for up to 72 hours.
i felt frustrated. completely defeated. i wanted to rant against this system that seemed to be barely held together by duct tape, the same system that didn’t recognize that i was actually quite well!
i forgot to mention that we were stripped of all our possessions before entering the psych ward unit. i’ve been without my iphone for several hours now. i had no idea what was happening in the outside world.
i asked if i could log a bunch of phone numbers down from my cell phone, so i could have folks call me back at the psych ward.
they obliged. i jotted down folks who i thought i could trust... first, joy, my ex-girlfriend. then luke, my best friend over in seattle. paige, my friend that i’ve really started to fucking appreciate over the past few months. and finally, kerri, someone i’ve dated for a little while here in NYC, someone who i thought could really just... understand me for a sec.
i text everyone about where i am and the number where they can reach me.
i put my phone away and head back into the ward.
immediately, i start getting phone calls back to back - everyone’s starting to call in. i decide that full disclosure was probably the best course of action here.
i think i stop using the phone at around this point. i’ve had conversations with all of the folks listed above, but also with my parents, who i decided to ring up as well. it was a bit of a pain trying to get some of these calls through, since they still operate with ‘long distance calls’ for some reason. it didn’t help that most of the folks i wanted to chat with are across the country.
in any case, i realize, between 9 and 11 PM, how... much people actually care for me. that i’ve something to look forward to every time i meet with folks, that i’m not alone in all of this, and that we gotta fight against this shit.
i couldn’t sleep the whole night. bright lights, loud TVs, nurses who called for people’s names when someone called them from the outside, etc.
by 5 AM, i start sketching. i’ve been thinking long and hard about all the things that matter to me. i’ve got seattle, a flawed town but one that’s incredibly beautiful, with imperfection built into the ethos. and i’ve got my friends and family, the ones telling me to fight on and to keep my spirits up. there’s a whole lot of other stuff there as well, but these two things were anchors that felt especially strong to me throughout the evening of half-sleep and contemplation.
i decide to write the following on the note above (sorry for repeats of themes in advance, but i’m mostly just wanting to be faithful to what i’m thinking now and what i wrote back in the ward):
being in this psych ward, i’ve been humbled several times over. when i came in, i didn’t understand the system: no one seemed to care that i felt like a seemingly fit person in a system that just wanted to keep me in with no recourse. i’ve been stripped of all my possessions, the most naked and vulnerable i’ve been to myself.
but now, after about seventeen sleepless hours, i witnessed two nightwatches and a nurse console a lady experiencing... night tremors perhaps? i’m not exactly sure how to describe it. all three expressed a type of empathy that i couldn’t believe was possible within the system. then it all clicked into place - these folks ingest a lot of cases and have to be present for each and every one of us sufferers of some phantoms flanking us on all sides. they don their armor and get these phantoms away from each of us, just enough for us to pick up our sword and deal the killing blow.
these mechanisms, not being able to leave, being stripped of my possessions: this has been the best thing to happen to me. i could not identify my allies otherwise; my mind was too clouded to realize what’s important. and these workers: they’ve got a heart of gold. they have to deal with real shit day after day.
i’m renewed. i know what to live for now. friends and family called, even folks i’ve only really known for months, and they all have related to this despair and negativity i’ve held onto with a vice grip. and now i can say for a fact that they’re all rooting for me to live.
samples, finished, now just need coffee and need to chat with the staff psychiatrist about heading out.
this sounds really dumb, but looking at those sketches of WA state and some crappy sketches of some of my friends telling me that ‘i got this’ is... something that brought me back i think.
i’m still climbing this rock face, but now i’m oriented in the right direction.
