The Baudelaire parents had an enormous libary in their mansion, a room filled with thousands of books on nearly every subject. Being only twelve, Klaus of course had not read all the books in the Baudelaire libary, but he had read a great many of them and had retained a lot of the information from his readings. He knew how to tell an alligator from a crocodile. He knew who killed Julius Caesar. And he knew much about the tiny, slimy animals found at Briny Beach.
My collection of Penguin Classics is growing! I can’t get over how gorgeous they are! I seriously hope they release more titles this way, I’d love to see what Daphne DuMaurier’s “Rebecca” would look like.

In Focus: Up Helly Aa
In Lerwick, the capital of Scotland’s Shetland Islands, a fire festival named Up Helly Aa is held every January to mark the end of the yule season. Local participants called guizers celebrate their Norse heritage, dressing in Viking gear and marching through town with battle axes and torches as they drag a ceremonial Viking longboat. At the end of the procession, the guizers hurl their torches onto the longboat and set it ablaze. After the flames die down, guizers sing the traditional song “The Norseman’s Home” before a night of partying.
