Climate Strike Canada member Emma Lin was the first to combine the hashtag with a photo of herself holding up a sign with the words on it, sparking a movement of young activists doing the same worldwide.

Boozhoo (hello), my name is Ken, I am a disabled Ojibwe artist from northern Wisconsin. Im trying to reconnect and Im waiting for an email back from the tribe I contacted. Im not in a rush for them to get back b/c they obv have Way more pressing issues, but Im in kind of a weird limbo state while Im waiting since to seriously reconnect I need their approval and help, but Im also like, discovering intergenerational trauma and shit? I'm not asking for advice or for you to tell me I'm native or anything, I just wanted to like. Vent since idk anyone irl who would really understand

This is so valid, anon, and something I’m struggling a lot with personally.

First of all, please keep that patient attitude because you’re gonna need it. In my experience, tribe emails are few and far apart just because there’s always so much shit going on. It’s especially hard during this time of year, with all of the events and drives and personal things that are going on in the tribe. My recommendation is to wait until the holiday season ends and if you don’t get a response before like mid-January, shoot them another email. Sometimes people just forget to reply.

Moving on. If you haven’t made some sort of online space for reconnecting, you should do that! I really enjoy Native tumblr, but I’ve heard twitter is pretty active too. There’s probably forums too, but I haven’t found any and would really appreciate a link if anyone knows some. Just carve out a space for this sort of thing somewhere, a place where you can post and cry and yell into a void to your heart’s content and where you can find other people with similar experiences. It makes a huge difference in the reconnection process.

If you ever want to cry or yell at something that isn’t an emotionless and endless void, my inbox is usually open. I can’t promise that I’ll be particularly helpful, but sometimes it helps just to know someone’s listening.

Native Twitter is a really big one, which op mentioned. Native Instagram is another really great one, which is mostly native memes from everywhere. An account that comes to mind in my circle is @/knockout.kokum . They're really funny :)

I don't know about Facebook, but a lot of the memers from instagram are on both Twitter and Facebook, so there's activity there. There's a page called Decolonize Yourself on Facebook and Instagram for sure, I don't know about twitter.

Native Twitter is a big one for language revitalization as well, so most of the time you'll be able to find a group who speak/teach your language.

Overall, I would say Twitter has the biggest variety of things, instagram is almost purely memes (that usually end up on Twitter), and Facebook is like a copy so that those without the other two can find the content.

The Walking Eagle on Twitter is HILARIOUS :D You should definitely give them a follow and they're on all three :)

I really love Odemiini-giizis (June, Strawberry Moon) because it makes me happy, but I think waagosh is my favorite word overall because foxes have special personal meaning for me and it's great being able to express my love for them with Anishinaabemowin :)
