Claudie’s Collection: Spring Dress

I’m expanding my Claudie’s collection myself since AG hasn’t released anything for her since November (despite the fact that it’s Black History Month and Claudie is literally a black historical character >:( ).

I did the embroidery by hand, and tried to make it look close to the dress in the middle.

I later cursed the fact that I made the conscious choice not to topstitch the pleats on her bodice.

It's so wild to me when people get angry that I unbox my dolls. Like they are mine, I simply do not care how rare or expensive they are or will be. I'm not investing in them to resell. I'm buying them to play with. And it's ALWAYS non collectors saying this.

Welcome to my doll family, Miss Claudie Wells!

Both of Claudie's books, by Brit Bennett, are well-written and cover important history. I did not know about The Great Migration and the dangers that Black people faced throughout the South, especially before the Civil Rights movement, when I was in elementary school. I can understand it not feeling comfortable or fun to address this history, and I wish this history was not reality. But given that it is, we all have an obligation to confront it. The introduction through these books is appropriate for young readers, and they won't reach their teens or adulthood completely unaware.

I've also loved The Vanishing Half and The Mothers, novels for adults by Brit Bennett.

Claudie is a beautiful doll, and I look forward to making clothes for her and setting up scenes for her.

My parents recently went to Hawaiʻi for their 30th wedding anniversary and my mother brought back this lovely dress for Nanea! It’s from a shop called Forever H & A in Lahaina, where the very talented owner Romela makes them by hand. Nanea looks so good in yellow 💛✨

In the wake of the wildfires that have swept through Maui, almost the entirety of Lahaina has been completely destroyed- including, I’m assuming, Forever H & A. I’m very upset to hear about the destruction of a place with so much vibrance and incredible history. If any of you can, please consider donating to help the people displaced by the fire and to rebuild Lahaina when it is safe to do so. Here are some relief funds that are accepting donations.
