tw under the cut: crime, death
> anjali grew up in queens, raised by a small army of indian aunties who had taken it upon themselves to work together to raise all their friends kids in the neighborhood. everyone was aunty, and everyone was like a parent to her. itâs a community she has been searching for ever since she grew up.
> with all the maushis and meshos backing her up and tutoring her through high school, anjali got a scholarship to nyu, later going on to med school to become a sports physician. her father had the money to pay for school and anjali never questioned it; the corner store she had grown up working in must have been doing well.
> however, it was a few years into her career as a doctor, finally paying off the small loan she had taken out to complete school that she was visited at work by two intimidating men who had each taken a grip of one of her shoulders and steered her out of the hospital to meet jensen marlow.
> it turned out her father had been using that convenience store to launder money for a rival gang. she was given a choice: come on to do backdoor emergency treatment at their quickly growing underground fight rings, or watch her father get carted off to prison. she picked the former, and it turned her world upside down.
> she ended up coming to these fights almost every night, her leather bag full of medical supplies in one hand, hiding a small revolver she bought as soon as she entered into this deal. she patched people up as best she could, and, when she was really in deep shit, sheâd end up with a bleeding henchman on her kitchen table in the dead of night, lest he go to the hospital and get caught.
> she did this for years and the paranoia almost reached a boiling point. she was constantly looking over her shoulder, excessively checking in on her parents, eternally on guard. the one bright spot in all of this was a handsome young fighter she met during all of thisâthey met when she was thirty-five, and walker atthill soon became the highlight of her nights, and no matter how tired or stressed or afraid she was, he could always put a smile on her face.
> a year ago, her father died. without the blackmail to hold over her anymore, anjali knew that now was the time to make a run for it. she told her now-fiance walker that he could either stay behind or come with her, and in three days flat they packed up as much shit as they could fit in a truck bought off a stranger upstate, and left for somewhere far, far away.
> on their road trip away from their troubles, their first stop was atlantic cityâthey were in this together now, for better or for worse.
> they finally landed up in shrike heights and ran out of money to keep traveling. they settled here and have been trying to keep a low profileâand somewhat failing, considering the way they seemed to have crash landed into town.
> anjali managed to lay down some roots here when the killings started. sheâd always had a mind for puzzlesâone so potent, in fact, that she had started drawing connections between people in town, just as a mental exercise for her. now that the town is in even more danger than before, she has been keeping a specific eye out for anything totally bizarreâand making notes of all of it.
