It’s been a long time since she’s seen her old friend. Saira weaves her way through the crowd in his family’s house, smiling at those she recognises but ducking away from conversation. She wants to see Felix first, not just because she’s anxious about being back in town after so many years. He’s been a constant in her life despite the distance.

But the boy she’d known not so long ago has been replaced by a broad shouldered and tall almost stranger. Saira stops in her tracks, mouth dropping open before affront takes the place of the urge to blush. “Damnit, you got taller than me!”

“You are being unreasonable.” Kendra scoffed at Carter's condescending demeanour, already done with the conversation. “Hath-set is still out there, Chay-ara –”

She cut in, not for the first time. “Kendra.”

He rolled his eyes. He actually rolled his eyes. Kendra's eyes narrowed, bristling at the dismissal. “You are Chay-ara as well –”

Again, she cut in. “My name is Kendra.” He inclined his head, but the look of frustration in his eyes did not abate. It matched her own, but they were annoyed for different reasons. She knew he didn't see anything wrong with his insistence on calling her by the name of a long dead woman, but she did. If he loved her like he claimed he did, he would understand that. Scoffing again, Kendra took a step back. “I prefer Kendra and I have told you this countless times.”

“It is habit,” he tried to explain, offering no apologies. “With the memories -”

“Don't use the memories as an excuse,” she interrupted again. “If you cannot learn to respect me even this much, we have nothing left to talk about.” She made to turn away, throwing a last comment over her shoulder. “We'll handle Hath-set when he becomes a problem. Until then, leave me be.”
