She had wandered up to the front door of the casino, the street entrance, on a whim. After seeing Raoul the night of the robbery, it only felt RIGHT to check in on Annabella. It wasnât right, punishing her for her anger directed at Raoul, and sheâd hardly spoken two words to Annabella the last four years, breaking her silence only at Gustaveâs funeral when Annabella and Philippe made an appearance to offer their condolences. It was nice, incredibly kind of them, and it wasnât fair to banish Annabella because of Raoulâs past indiscretions.
Even less fair now that she and Raoul are seemingly on GOOD TERMS again.
âI just came to see how you were doing,â she offers quietly, moving slowly, cautiously, to the other womanâs side, face pulled into a surprisingly sincere expression of concern and sympathy, âI heard what happened. It sounded AWFUL. How are you holding up?â It all sounds so horrible and trite, but itâs all she had to give at the moment. Christine has never been much good at giving comfort in hard time, but itâs infinitely harder trying to offer a stiff upper lip to a woman who has enough STRENGTH in her for twenty people.
Christine was difficult. To Annabella, the girl had held the world within her very palms. Perhaps, sheâd wondered, it was why the distance that had grown between them had felt much needed. If anything, it was as if looking through a mirror that not only showed ones true self, but what one mightâve been. Her intentions not led from malice nor bitterness, no. Where Christine was involved, Annabellaâs heart seemingly swelled thrice in size if only to wish the girl the utmost of admiration. The girls softened vocals offer nothing but solace to the woman. Better a known presence than that of a stranger. Yet, had they not grown as such throughout the past years? Had Annabella ever wondered what had happened to the bright eyed beauty as oft as she shouldâve? The answer would go unknown, a mere passing thought in a world all too tumultuous. She feigns the obligatory response of Iâm fine. Its transparency all too noticeable within the hoarse words that teeter against her tongue.Â
âChristine.â The name rolls off of Annabellaâs tongue with ease and itâs as if no time has passed at all. A woman of her stature, lips curled upwards if only for the sake of warmth towards her companion. A sense of pride overcomes the woman and for the life of her she cannot command the emotions that eat away at her stomach, that threaten to rot her core. Yet, nevertheless, head held high she neednât falter. âA tragedy, truly.â Lips press tightly together, arms fold against her chest as a sigh yearns to escape. Through heavily lidded gaze, she meets that of the girl beside her. âAlthough, you, my dear are a welcomed surprise.â A beat to follow, sweetness laced within her words as instinct most motherly shines through. âHave you seen the boys at all? Iâm sure Raoul wouldnât be opposed to some company.â
