A DAY IN THE LIFE OF ME
Personal made public
It has always fancinated me to understand what people find relaxing, calming, peaceful or enjoy most. What do they turn to when they are looking for a peace of mind, wholeness and ātranquilityā. To me, when I feel anxiety or stress, I turn to reading from magazines, to fictional books or shampoo ingredients on a packaging. Words seem to distract my mind from the state I am feeling, the less it makes sense the quicker it works. I also find calmness on my own, as an only child I would play alone with my toys most of the time in my world (state of mind), however I also get an overwhelming sensation of loneliness if I spend too much time in my own company, a phone call can usually mute this feeling. Words become relevant again but instead of reading, I listen to someone speak to distract my thoughts. This also draws into my love of truly embracing music and lyrics and poetry, I feel extremely happy when I deeply understand what the message of the lyrics/poems are saying, I feel emotions intensely. I find peace in certain colours, fabrics and temperatures.
In this personal project I aim to explore different approaches to the sensation of tranquility personally and from others perspectives. I will investigate if there are reasons you may feel tranquil in certain places or states of mind, and what is says about your personality and mental state. If there are substances that help to create the feeling of tranquility (Dopamine and Serotonin levels effect your brain, do anti depressants drugs help to assist a balanced mind?). Can you be in a tranquil state of mind but a restless environment? Perhaps you feel calmer in a group of friends, or in solitude, in a dark room or a light room, in silence or in the middle of a rock concert, is it something you have to find or is it fate? Tranquility is a feeling of calmness, peacefulness or repose, but this is demonstrated in vast environments, personally to an individual. I hope to illustrate the responses of others and myself in a series of mixed media pieces, visulising the response of the question: What is Tranquility to you?
Semiotics
For the Semiotics project I opted for the Poetry and Lyrics brief. Initially I wanted to illustrate Melanie MartinezāsĀ āPity Partyā but after experimenting with her baby doll aesthetic, I decided not to use it.Ā I then looked into Tame ImpalaāsĀ Let it Happen. I used the first verse and chorus, the song sounds psychedelic and the lyrics talk about a person who can hear voices in their head telling them toĀ āLet it Happenā and as they listen a drift into a dream like state, they start to wonder about what the voices in their head is talking about, perhaps questioning the people around them and what their intentions are. They start to feel stressed and hear their alarm bells ringing and wake from their state.Ā
I created a story board and sketched them in bigger forms, I chose to add psychedelic colours to fit with the instrumental of the song, I depicted a man, waking up in dream and being drawn to a voice inside a large Rolling Stones inspired mouth, he started floating on a rainbow of music and listens to his inner voice. Eventually waking from his mundane alarm clock telling him he is back in reality.Ā
As well as making a digital version of this song, I also created a Lithography print depicting this story explaining the same story.
Art of the Accident
I started this project experimenting with mono print and it developed into a project about self love and adviceĀ āIĀ wouldāve told my younger selfā. The mono prints I made were based on nostalgia, love, deep thoughts and insecurities. I also made some prints that I layered together to create monochrome patterns.Ā
I then started to collate a diary of my personal thoughts on what I wouldāve liked to have told my younger self to beĀ ācautiousā of growing up, I also wrote short stories about my life. After my crit I was advised to ask others what they wouldāve told their younger self, so through social media such as Instagram, Facebook and here on Tumblr, I got around 30 responses full of advise and stories; the advice mainly consisted of being confident and loving yourself, not caring about others opinions and generally being true to who you are. Which is great advice and has been said many times before but teenagers find it so difficult to accept themselves at that awkward stage of finding out who you are through-out hideous puberty. During a session in Bookarts, I created my own book, I chose to use this as a smallĀ āself love and adviceā zine.Ā
Explain the Unexplained Part 1&2
For part one of the project I chose to illustrate some of my dreams and nightmares. My inspiration came from the bizarre, vivid and realistic feelings and visuals I have when in deep sleep. I startedĀ āexercisingā my thoughts by illustrating a long term recurring nightmares I have had since childhood. Although the scenery in my nightmares may be different, the same person seems to be reoccurring; and as I looked into what certain nightmares mean, I found that the cloaked, dark, hollow-eyed person I kept seeing was probably caused by stress or anxiety as when I was in these nightmares I felt under pressure, trapped and hopeless. Funnily enough since exercising these thoughts, I have not had a nightmare. Other nightmares can be comical and my brain automatically steers them to being more positive than negative before waking. I once dreamt about an evil controlling cow who turned into a man every time he got a phone call and although this cow was something to beĀ āfearedā by the end of the dream, I felt like I was more in control than it was, resulting in an extraordinary dream instead of nightmare. I have also dreamt about being in video games (gory they may be) but exciting. I have illustrated a series of drawings based on the characters from my dreams and nightmares, to show not only how frightful they are but also what brilliant story characters they would make! I gained much inspiration from Tim BurtonsĀ āA Nightmare before Christmasā.
In part two of this project we were asked to explain the unexplainable, in which I decided to study aliens. I chose to use tissue paper and simplistically cut shapes...I wondered are they so different from the Human Race? Or are they the same. Through a couple of drawings accompanied by text or famous quotes, I collaged together some comical pieces of work. I wanted part two to differ from part one and as extraterrestrial life is not yet understood or explained, I thought it would interesting to create small pieces based on theories behindĀ āaliensā.
