hux, who is an illegitimate child, born to a man who failed the empire, who’s sole job is to make excellent soldiers. imagine the pressure hux was put under. imagine the teasing, the abuse. his real mother he never got to know, he was told she was just some whore. his stepmother resented him and never loved him. his father constantly calling him weak and useless and a runt. reminding him that there was no room for failure, that should he embarrass his father the punishment will be far greater than death. 

hux was top of his class, had to be, but still never good enough. there is always room for improvement. he had to hear from all of his superiors how great his father is, or how corrupt, and how proud he must be. proud. a word hux has never come to know from his father. 

he becomes general so young because he devoted his whole life to it. no time for friends or fun or lovers. hux hasn’t relaxed a day in his life. he becomes general of the first order, takes over his father’s program, makes it better. 

but then one of his troopers betrays them. and then starkiller is destroyed. where does this leave our beloved general?

oh my god but imagine all Hux’s teachers being told by Brendol to never offer the runt any praise. He’s been working Hux’s whole life to make him perfect and he isn’t going to allow an errant kind word to undo all his hard work. 

So Hux is constently told that he could do better, that they all speak to him with that undertone of disappointment his father has down pat. Like they expected better of him and he keeps proving them wrong.

Hux is driven to prove to his father that he’s worth something.

His superiors would never say anything about how fracking perfect Hux is because he’s perfect and they hate him and he never has any time for social calls. Like he thinks he’s better than them.

And then Kylo comes along and the praise just spills out of him in error. Something he meant to keep inside how impressive the maneuver was, how clever his plan, how wonderfully ruthless.

And Hux just like stumbles right there on the bridge, looking back at Kylo with wide eyes and flushed face.

“What?”

“I said you did well. I’m impressed.” Kylo shrugs it off like it means nothing, because surely someone with a record like Hux is familiar with praise, “I won’t say it again General.”

But god how Hux wants him to say it again. Finds his heart fluttering at the very idea of someone finally seeing his worth.

Kylo has no idea why his praise threw Hux off. Why his insults to Hux’s father get him so fired up. He assumed it just because how proud Hux is. It’s not until Kylo actually meets Hux’s parents that he understands.

It was at some Order gala, many of the old empire families were present. Kylo did not wear his mask, no one knew who he was anyways. He wore his FO uniform, and did his best to remain unseen.

He ends up sitting next to Brendol Hux. At first he was unaware, but once the man started to speak of Hux he understood who this man was. 

“You must be proud,” Kylo says. He bites back the bitterness. All he wanted from his own father was praise, and he never got it. Hux was probably showered with it daily.  

“Proud of Armitage? He could do better,” Brendol says offhandedly. 

This confuses Kylo. Hux was the youngest general in history, he improved the trooper program, he made Starkiller a reality. Hux was perfect.

Hux’s father calls him over to the table, tells him to sit down. Hux meets Kylo’s wide eyes and says nothing. Only Hux knows Kylo is not just a mere Order officer. 

Brendol continues to put Hux down, point out all the things he’s done wrong.

“Look how thin you still are, have you stopped your training?”

“No, sir.”

“And why is Starkiller not complete yet? If it were me, it would have been finished months ago.”  

“We are going as fast as we–”

“Don’t speak back to me, insulate boy!” 

“Sorry, sir.”

“There are no room for excuses, this is your responsibility. When I allowed you to keep my name it was not so that you could embarrass me. You will not fail, do you understand me?”

“Yes, sir.”

Kylo could feel the tension rolling off Hux in waves. This was an awkward situation for one, but Kylo could also feel himself getting angry. Hux was perfect, and he never allowed people to speak to him this way. What right did this man have to talk to him like this?

“General Hux is the finest soldier this world has ever seen, he built the Order from the ashes of your precious failed Empire and made it superior,” Kylo spat. “He has taken your flawed trooper program and perfected it. You should be grateful to have a son like him.”

The table was shocked by Kylo’s outburst. Hux most of all. 

“How dare you’–”

“No, how dare you. Your son is a better man than you could ever hope to be, and you should be honored that he has repaired the shame that you brought to your family.”

Hux was openly gaping. Brendol was red in the face.

“Who the kriff are you to speak to me this way?”

“I,” Kylo said standing up and leaning over him, “am Kylo, Master of the Knights of Ren, apprentice of Supreme Leader Snoke and co-commander of the Finalizer. I am your superior. And, so is General Hux. I suggest that you show some respect.”

Brendol’s eyes widened and he looked like he was about to pass out. 

“Care to join me for a drink, General?” Kylo asks, looking directly at Hux. “I am quite done conversing with these uncivilized creatures.”

Hux said nothing, just stood up and followed Kylo away. His hands were in fists, an attempt to keep himself from shaking. But he was not angry. He was shocked.

“Why did you do that?” Hux asked when they retreated to a balcony. 

“I was tired of seeing you allow yourself to be treated that way. You know that you are better than him, don’t you?” 

Hux just looked away. “No one else is out here, you can drop the act.”

“Hux…” Kylo said softly. “I meant everything I said back there.”  

Hux’s head shot up to look at him, searching his eyes for any hint of lies. 

“Really?” Hux said, hardly a whisper.

“Of course. I know…I know I never tell you, because I am…jealous. Of how perfect you are.”

“P…Perfect?”

“Yes, Hux. You are the most perfect person I have ever met. And if you ever forget that,” Kylo says, taking a step closer to Hux until they are just inches apart. “Come find me, and I will remind you.”
