He looked down, smiling just a bit before back up to her blue eyes. “I guess I should try and be ‘different’ more. Being the nice guy hasn’t exactly worked out for me, so maybe a little intimidation and taking what I want would be more… satisfying,” he said, licking his lips slowly. “I don’t think I’m ‘nice’. If I were ‘nice’, then I’d be out there meeting a girl normally and going through the whole dating thing, rather than buying my way into a pet who I know I can control without question or need to hesitate. That’s not a good trait.” An eyebrow was raised at the dancer thing. She’d be.. flexible then. It brought a slew of inappropriate thoughts to mind.

Annie was going to make a comment similar to Xavier’s. Maybe adding how nice was relative, and there wasn’t much to compare it to at this point. She was going to, but... he said it all. Instead, her thumbnail found her lips and she brought her teeth onto it, pressing in absently. “Have you had success? Controlling people before? That’s a thing that you like to do?”

 He looked off for a moment, calculating in his head those he knew of here and who would be likely to do that. It wouldn’t be unheard of.”Call me if it happens. I’ll be sure and send extra lotion for you,” he offered with a bit of a smile. At her request, he thought about it for a moment and pushed off the wall to then occupy the space beside her once more. “I never really picture myself as intimidating. But I think it’s sort of nice that you see me that way. Very different,” Xavier said as he looked over into her eyes. “For what it’s worth… I’m sorry you’re in the middle of all this against your will.”

Xavier granted her request and came to rest next to her. Annie pulled up her leg so she could face him better. “Different? You can’t honestly tell me that no one has ever found you intimidating before. Because you are... a league of your own, you know?” She let out a breath of a laugh, head shaking slightly as she glanced off. “Then again, maybe you’re the nice one and everyone else is just varying levels of messed up around here.” She couldn’t help but grin at this apology. Smiling was prime deflection. “I was a dancer before I came here,” she said. “I’m used to doing things against my will.”

It was certainly sarcastic-applicable, if you enjoyed getting built up to the point of high expectations only to be dropped like a rock for the next pretty thing that came along. It makes one bitter and while you might push it out of your mind, maybe one day forgive, you never forgot. And Xavier never forgot. He tilted his head at her explanation and nodded. “Ahh… well, that’s pretty dark and twisted. Should I expect to find you in a hole at some point, looking up and out of it?” asked the man curiously. 

“I guess that would depend on whether or not someone here wanted to drop me into a hole,” Annie said, trying to find at least some humor in her current situation. It was nearly impossible, frankly, as she felt little other than frustration and fear, but... at least Xavier was turning out to be quick-witted, ferocious... and kind. Dichotomies that she didn’t quite understand... but didn’t quite need to. “Can, uh...” Annie motioned once to the plant and the place where he was standing. “Can you sit down? You’re intimidating all the way up there.” Or maybe that was his thing.

Pausing on the book she was reading, Delilah lifted her head to look at her companion– another unfamiliar face to the brunette. Setting down the book on her lap, she nodded her head as she smiled a little. “Yeah– d-do you need help with something?” the brunette offered warmly, even though she may already have an inkling on what the other may want to ask her.

Annie shifted a bit where she sat, inquisitive gaze on the other brunette. “I’m not sure yet,” she admitted, though admitting weakness was never something she minded. “I’ve put two and two together, and I got close to four, so I’ve got that down. I guess what I’m trying to figure out at this point is... how do I make sure I meet the right people?”

Nodding understanding, Xavier angled his chin down, but his eyes stayed on Annie as she talked. “Are relationships anyone’s ‘forte’?” he laughed mirthlessly. “But I understand where you’re coming from. You have something good, you grab hold and don’t let go. Even if it burns you in the end. I’m sorry you got hurt,” he replied, licking his lips and seemed to be hesitantly pondering a little reveal himself. “Ellie. Didn’t end well,” he said quietly, showing his understanding of the residual feelings that prevented you from reconnecting in the long run. “Buffalo Bill thing, eh? Does that make you ‘Annie Oakley? I admit my wild west characters are rather limited to Bugs Bunny cartoons.”

Annie wasn’t entirely convinced that the burn of which he spoke was worth it. It was the burn that got her here, after all. The burn that was still sizzling through her bones and making her weak. “Sounds like a real winner,” she mused, though there was little actual amusement. His next comment confused her, and Annie’s face read that, through her knit eyebrows and the way she sat up and forward. “Huh?” And then, it hit her. “Oh! What, no, not the Old West Buffalo Bill. The Silence of the Lambs Buffalo Bill. You know... put the lotion in the basket guy.”

Hux nodded in understanding. The rules, while they appeared simple, could be disorienting. He wasn’t quite sure how the pets managed while they were unclaimed. “I can try to explain some of the basics, but you’d be better off talking to a guard for a more in depth explanation.” He thought for a second. The guards tended to be more than a little dismissive to the pets and Hux knew that there had been multiple times that a pet had been roughed up by a guard. He couldn’t let that happen to the doe-eyed girl in front of him in good conscience. 

“I’ll take you to a guard. You can ask them any questions you have. They won’t touch you with a master around.” 

He smiled at the girl and offered his hand out for her to shake. “It’s nice to meet you, Annie.”

It was the first bit of physical kindness and normalcy that Annie had been offered. She accepted his hand gratefully, squeezing it slightly to shake, while she considered his offer. “I don’t know if I feel like interacting with a guard just yet,” she admitted. “I’m thinking I just... deal with it. Whenever things come up, just deal, you know?”

Annie couldn’t be certain what would come up or when... but she knew that she could better gauge the place by the people who lived here, and that was precisely what she intended to do.

“I feel like I should stick by people like you,” she said, plainly. “I’ve been told it can get a little hairy sometimes with others.”

The man’s shoulder’s moved as he turned and leaned back against the opposite wall, eyes on hers. “It is. And there are times you’ll roll the dice, hoping to win and come up craps instead. Other times you might get lucky.” Xavier’s brow furrowed as he pondered what she said. “Wait, I thought you said you didn’t get ‘attached’. What’s this new possibility you’re throwing out then?” asked the man with a curiousness. He couldn’t read her, whether to write her off or mark her down in the ‘potential’ column.

Annie prided herself in being unreadable. It was a survival instinct she’d developed years ago. But then again... she’d never really been asked about her intention before. She glanced up at Xavier, momentarily perplexed. “I said it’s not my forte.” She sighed, letting her head loll back against the sofa, a hand slipping back into her hair. “I did it once. Ended poorly. Vincent.” His name came out easier than she would have liked. “But... whatever. He’s mean and self-centered, and there’s no point in...” She scoffed once, stopping her line of thinking in favor of looking at Xavier. “Possibility is... I suck onto the nice ones like a leech and pray it’s not a Buffalo Bill thing.” A hint at something close to hope... which was already a foreign entity for Annie.

He still didn’t look at her, mesmerized by the veins of the leaf, the thought of all that went on in there rather than the outside world. A place to put thoughts rather than painful memories. “Some form connections faster than others. It’s both a blessing - you easily take someone and care for them, nurture them, make them feel like a queen. And it’s also a curse because if that doesn’t work out, all you’ve given of yourself is destroyed, leaving just a hole of bitterness.” He sighed, closing his eyes for a moment and then looking back to her. At least her own confession had showed him where she stood and their incompatibility. “Well, if not connecting to someone is your thing, detach from everyone around here and no matter what, you’ll do fine.”

So many varying concepts here. Annie’s head was swimming. “Okay, hold on.” She lifted a finger to draw a circle in the air, as though rewinding a tape. “So some people are here to be in love and connect and yada yada yada. And some people are here for sex. And it’s just kind of... luck of the draw, who chooses you? This sounds exhausting.” She let out a huff of a breath and uncurled from herself, laying back against the couch, somewhat motionless. “So I’m going to lose my virginity to some... sexual sadist, maybe or maybe not be someone’s plaything, and possibly get attached to someone who may be into sex and may just be into treating me like a queen. It’s a crapshoot.”

He raised a hand. “For some, yes. You wanted worst case scenario, there you have it. For others… not so much. I know of some others who won’t just rapidly jump you and take what they want, regardless of your feelings,” Xavier replied, stepping aside and mindlessly teasing the leaves of a nearby potted tree. “Others give away what you want, regardless of your feelings. Guess it means that around here, meaningful connection is rare and it’s something you should enjoy, nurture and grow.”

“Connection isn’t really my forte.” It came through a bitter tone that Annie tried to dilute. She drew up her legs, hugging them to her chest, her eyes intent on the motion of his fingers against the leaves of the plant. She wondered if he touched everything with such care and delicateness. “It’s overrated, and people get hurt. Every relationship has a last day.”

“Being a recluse works. You get hurt less that way.” There was something more to that statement, something that said he’d lived that hermit life himself. Xavier bit his lip after licking them, looking away at her somewhat smart attitude. He looked back to her. “Around here? You might find someone that likes that…. calling you all sorts of vile things while you just mew out and don’t even know it? There are some kinky fuckers here,” chuckled the man before he looked back to her. “Me? Oh, I’m hardly a big brother type. Unless it’s one of those ‘big brother where you have inappropriate relations with’,” the man smirked. “I’m just trying to give you a blunt picture of what things are like here. The rest… and the people here… I guess I’ll let you make up your own opinions about them.”

Annie knew that statement all too well. Being away from people meant that you couldn’t get close to them, which meant that you could suffer loneliness instead of heartbreak. Worked for Annie. She’d struggled to stay lonely, isolating herself for the majority of her life, and though it made her a target in some ways, it relieved her in far more. “So this is a sex thing.” Annie said it simply, the information finally setting in. Her matter-of-fact demeanor, however, couldn’t disguise the slight panic in her eyes.

Sugar coating the experience was not the thing, he noted. Lips pursed, Xavier pondered how blunt to be with her and decided that if she could ‘take it’, he’d give it to her. Proverbially at least. “Well, until the point where you’re claimed by a master, you stay in the dorms and are at the complete mercy of any master or mistress that comes along. You have to do anything they say, no matter what. There’s also rooms downstairs, little ‘playrooms’ with bondage devices and toys that you can be enjoyed with. Really, it’s whatever they wish - or however they wish, no matter your objection - that you have to be cautious of. I’ve seen it happen. It’s not…” He paused, then just shrugged. “It’s just something to be careful of. Randomly talking to people could yield more trouble than you expect.”

“So go into a corner and become a recluse. Got it.” Annie flashed him two thumbs up with an over-exaggerated, cheesy grin. How did she get herself into this situation? It was a moot point, obvious, but she still couldn’t help but wonder if there was a way out. She supposed everyone felt that way. “Maybe I’ll pretend to be mute or something, so people will leave me alone. No one likes a mute, right? And you... you’re, what. My mansion fairy godmother? Like a Big Brothers Big Sisters initiation thing?”

His jaw moved, attempting to comprehend the potential gift he was being handed on a silver platter. Or not. His eyes did roam her, dissecting, studying her, wondering what she was like under those clothes, how the girl would react when controlled, what he could make her do. A thousand possibilities. All maybe for naught. “Well, it’s definitely weird for you, I understand. I’ve been here a while, myself,” confessed the man. He rose, his tall frame cutting off the overhead light as he looked down, silhouetted. “Come with me. I’ll at least show you around a bit and, the dorms where you can settle in and get your bearings.”

Annie squinted slightly as Xavier rose, trying to make out some of his features through the shadows over his face. I’ve been here a while, myself. “So this is commonplace for you. All of it. Me, others... you’re used to it...” The girl wasn’t sure if that made her feel better or worse about things. She stood her ground by remaining seated where she was, eyes focusing on one of the buttons on his dapper suit jacket. Even the thread had no frays. “I’ve been in a dorm before. I don’t need to be shown around. I’d just as soon understand the worst of things. So... prep me. What’s the worst of it?” Her hands disappeared under the sleeves of her oversized sweater and she clasped her woolly palms over her bared knees, denim shorts frayed at the ends and stopping mid-thigh. “I can take it.”

He smiled a little at the question, he really hadn’t expected that. His eyes glimmered in amusement. “On barbecue? Well, barbecued food definitely is delicious, haven’t actually attended to many parties but… anyway. What do you think?” 

Annie nodded a few times to his response, seeming a little absent. Her answer grew more pointed as she explained, “I haven’t had it in months. You know... dancer’s diet. But I’d kill a pig myself for some ribs. Care to help me out?”

Oliver wasn’t one to really have a good chat, always feeling kind of weird when talking with the pets. “So… I’m Oliver. What’s your name?” he asked, practically just to say anything at all. 

This was awkward. And at least the other man seemed to feel that, too. She responded with a small half-wave and, “Annie.” Short, sweet, to the point. She finally blurted out, “What’s your opinion on barbecue?”

“I tend to curse… a lot. Out of the bedroom… but even more in it,” he countered with a look, still testing her out to see her reactions and how she’d take it. He bit his lower lip as he watched her talk. The way her lips moved, how she breathed (damn her chest was massive, the body was beyond perfection in her proportions and she looked incredibly tempting), even the way her eyes jutted to him and away as she confessed like he was her priest. “Your first time in a situation like this? Or… your first time… ever?” Was she really the last American virgin??? That was unexpected. Not unheard of, the ‘acquisitions’ department here knew things about the girls, facts like that which sweetened the pot for a prospective client. “Thank you,” he added about her compliments to him. “The feeling is, I assure you, quite mutual.” 

Annie shot the man a warning look. “Well… don’t. Maybe I’ll make you a swear jar or something.” In the bedroom. She knew what he meant by that. She may have been innocent… but she wasn’t totally naive. Close to it at times, she thought, but not entirely. As though resigned, her frustrated-tinged tone admitted, “First time ever. Her hands clapped down on her thighs, a breath expelling through her nose, unable to look at him. He was positively… confusing. Intense. And his eyes had a way of seeing her, like he could penetrate her with them entirely. “Cool. Two attractive people in a weird situation. Sounds like a blast. What could go wrong?” Annie took in a deep breath, gathering as much confidence as she could muster. She finally looked over at him again, eyebrows crouching together. “So I’m Annie, and I guess the question is… what now?”

Hux furrowed his brow as the girl spoke, it seemed that the mansion must’ve been shorthanded lately because there were a multitude of new pets that continued to wander around the mansion looking just as lost as the girl in front of him looked now. 

“Ah,” he nodded his head in understanding, “That can be tough. I’d assume no one has gone over the rules here with you?” He chuckled humorlessly. He didn’t understand how the owners of Bates could expect the new pets to follow rules they had not been introduced to, it was a sure was to further traumatize the pets in his opinion. 

“I’m Huxley, by the way.” 

“It’s hard to explain what I know,” Annie admitted. She’d been piecing together bits here and there, but the truth of the matter was that she was having a hard time wrapping her head around this new life. He seemed patient, though. He’d done this before. Or, at least, he had the heart to reach out to her now.

Was it good will, however?

Annie knew that she would probably be asking herself this question time and time again now. “I’m Annie.”
