I’ve been more depressed than I’ve ever been before and without the rigmarole of every day, pre-Covid life, I can no longer deny the fact that my failure to take care of myself has always had an absurd martyr-like performative quality to it. It made me feel superior to other people, counting off the few hours I slept the previous night as if my “sacrifice” or “suffering” in the name of homework or work for my job made me any better of a person than my more rested peers.

It didn’t.

It just made me more tired. 

Without places to be and, more honestly, without an audience for said “suffering,” I’m realizing how empty my day is. Am I still busy and do I still have too much work and do I still spend a million hours a week working? Yes. But are there also moments, hours wasted agonizing about what I have to do instead of just doing what I have to do? Also yes. 

There is no “returning to normal” and I have to remind myself that “normal,” or at least my normal, wasn’t sustainable any way.

Me, 2020.

I wear blue light glasses and work at least 7 hours a day at home. I have red hair that I’ve been wearing in braids at night so that it comes out wavy in the morning. I’m sadder than I have been in some previous years. I’m happier than I have been in some previous years. I read at least 400 pages a week in scripts and stories for my internship, and at most 800 pages a week. I’m embarrassed about how basic it is that coffee wakes me up and the fact that I’ve gone back to using fanfiction to get to sleep.   I played ukulele for 2 hours today, trying to write a song about the problems I have expressing to men what it is that I want. Today I did yoga. Today I’ve taken a lot of deep breaths.  I haven’t been hugged in over a month.
