I am doing the above subject online through Curtin University. As a part of the course I have to research and explore the art and artists that the printmaking umbrella covers, over disciplines like bookbinding; woodcut; lino-print; collagraphy; etching; typography; etc etc etc! This blog is to act as my online visual diary, a place to collect my thoughts on the subject, store sources of inspiration and record the research & study done for the required subject tasks.

GO: A book project I did for the Fort Collins Book Fair. I found this beautiful book, Hiking Trails of Northern Colorado. It was in bad condition; the folio was apart from the cover and pages were missing. I gave it a new life. If you are local to Fort Collins go check it out at the Book Fair this week. It will be at The Bean Cycle available for bidding.

Tugboat Prinshop Carves and Prints “The Moon”

Back in December Paul Roden and Valerie Lueth over at Tugboat Printshop shared a tantalizing peek at their largest hand-carved relief print ever, The Moon. The print is finally complete and it’s gorgeous. The illustration of the moon was first drawn with a pen onto a piece of 3/4″ birch plywood incorporating various topographical features of the actual moon. After that was carved the stars were carved into the sky on the same piece of wood, but the moon was then cut out with a jigsaw prior to printing.

If you’re interested, the duo published the process of how everything came together over on their website, and 200 copies of the limited edition print are now shipping. Next up: Desert Island.

Research for: VSW11 P1 - TRANSFORMATION: Critical response

"British artist Jonathan Callan creates impressive organic figures using books that are curled, wrapped, and folded together using screws..."1

Like Pfeiffer, Jonathan Callan takes existing books and transforms them into new objects; he alters their context and their purpose. Working more exclusively with form (as opposed to Pfeiffer's preoccupation with meaning, the role and especially the message of 'The Book'), Callan builds on the aesthetic of each individual unit, working with its colour, shape, size, direction and the space that the resulting unions occupy.

There is no destruction in his work - the closing of the books’ pages and content forever could be viewed as a destruction, however I see the addition of screws and the amalgamation with other books is just that, additions: growth, construction - He recycles them after they’ve served their intended purpose and gives them a new purpose, one that is so far removed from the original that one’s perspectives on objects and their function can’t help but be changed, or at least challenged. Callan merges the inherently attractive design of each volume into a greater whole; transforming them into intricate, beautiful pieces of art & form. _________________________________
