Being a music major during a pandemic is fun bc I had my regularly scheduled mid-semester mental breakdown yesterday but I needed to record a playing video for my lesson today so now I just have a bunch of videos of me playing through my repertoire while crying 😅

How’s your quarantine going? My roommates and I are planning to go out tonight and buy the necessary materials to frame and hang an 8x10 picture of Engelbert Humperdinck in our living room (despite the fact that literally none of us have ever even watched/listened to Hansel and Gretel) and it is the most exciting thing we’ve set out to do all semester.

Wagner fans be like: oh my favorite Ring? That has to be the original 1876 Bayreuth production. Yeah recording technology didn’t exist and I wasn’t alive yet but I’ve looked at pictures and read through every single primary account and can safely say that no other production will ever be able to compare

For some reason at least once a month I just think about the principal horn player at the premiere of Beethoven’s third symphony... like I don’t even know who he was but everyone thought he made a mistake when he was just playing what Beethoven wrote :( I feel so bad I hope he’s doing ok

Ok obviously acknowledging the fact that you’re a good performer is really hard but do any other classical musicians get impostor syndrome about actually listening to music?? Like every time I talk to another musician and they bring up a piece I’ve never heard before I just start mildly panicking

I don’t know what’s more lame: the fact that I asked the other people in my quartet what their favorite chord quality was or the fact that we all had an answer at the ready

So I was working a lot on revising my Wagner analysis yesterday and it caused me to have a vivid and weird dream last night. Basically for some reason I was just chilling with a cat in Wagner’s house while he wasn’t home. As soon as I heard noise I knew he was back so I immediately went to hide. This didn’t work bc he found me and when I looked up he was literally a possum; like a human-size possum wearing clothes and standing on hind legs. I was so confused so I asked why he was a possum and not a human. He told me to mind my own business and then I woke up; I’m somewhat traumatized

Other than not being part of the orchestra, the one thing that makes me feel the most excluded as a classical saxophonist is that the horn is part of the WOODWIND QUINTET

Like I get you can’t just swap it out for saxophone in existing rep, but at least give it a new name. Like “woodwind quartet plus guest” or smth :(
