Cries echoed through the forest, alerting the creatures within of the presence of someone new. Someone different.

A large creature stepped out of the shadows of the trees, curious about the loud wailing. She soon found the source...

A small baby, wrapped in a soft, blue blanket.

The baby continued to cry out, completely unaware of the large creature staring at him.

The creature was unsure of what to do. She could just leave him. Another creature would deal with him and she wouldn't have to deal with the wailing...

But, oddly enough, the creature decided against that decision.

The creature made a few strange noises before finally settling into speaking english.

“Hello little one... why are you here?”

The last part was just the creature speaking aloud, as she knew that the baby couldn’t answer.

A few wisps of shadow flew from the creatures hands and lifted the baby to her.

“Do not cry little one...”

The creature reached over and started to gently pet the baby.

The baby eventually calmed down enough to open his eyes. He whined quietly as his eyes finally met the gaze of the creatures multiple eyes. To the creatures surprise, he wasn’t afraid. He just stared at her.

“It appears that you are too young to know proper fear... but do not worry, you have no reason to fear me anyway little one..."

The creature reached out a single claw and put it near the baby. The baby reached out and grabbed it.

The creature stared at the baby as he seemed to calm down a little bit more. Eventually, the baby smiled at her.

The creature pulled the baby close and cradled him in her arms.

“Do not worry little one. I will keep you safe. You do not deserve to die out here...”

The creature retreated back into the shadows, carrying the now calmed baby...

That was about 9 and a half years ago...

Gabriel smiled as he sat down on the bed in the cabin. Soon, wisps of shadow handed him a bowl of stew and some bread.

“Thanks mama!”

Melanie looked over at Gabriel, a sharp-toothed smile on her face.

“You’re welcome little one...”

Gabriel giggled at the nickname, then started eating his stew and bread.

Melanie turned back to the pot over the fire, then poured herself a bowl of stew.

Wisps of shadow trailed off of her as she walked over to her son. She sat down on the bed next to him, then started eating her stew and bread.

Once they were both done eating, Melanie put the bowls and spoons in the wash bin. Gabriel yawned as he hugged his teddy bear.

She turned to him and smiled softly.

“Is my little one sleepy?”

Gabriel nodded, already starting to get under the covers.

Melanie moved back over to the bed and pat her son on the head.

“Would you like me to sing to you dear?”

“Yes please mama.”

Melanie smiled softly, then started singing a gentle lullaby.

By the end of the lullaby, Gabriel was fast asleep, cuddling his teddy bear close.

Melanie gazed at her son lovingly.

“Goodnight my son. Rest well...”

Melanie went over to the wash bin to start washing the dishes...

Gabriel was about to nibble the mushroom, when Melanie stopped him.

“We should have that washed first little one.”

“Oh, right! Yes do that.” He had forgotten that most people liked to do that. It made sense though, not a lot of creatures were as resistant to things as he was.

He started walking again, speeding up a little as he smelled some fruits. After a small while more they reached a patch of brambles with little patches of blackberries inside. “Berries!” He go :D

Gabriel and Melanie followed Viper, then stopped when he did.

Gabriel gasped excitedly at the berries.

“Mama look! Blackberries! Can I pick some?”

“I would say yes, but we don’t have anything to carry them in.”

It narrowed its eye and looked around, spotting a plant with large, waxy leaves. He grabbed some along with some other miscellaneous plant life and made a little leaf pouch, presenting it to Gabriel. “For carrying!!”

Gabriel looked at the pouch in awe before gently taking it from Viper and giving him a hug.

“Thank you Viper!”

He then went over to the blackberries and started picking them.

It chirped at them and grinned, helping them pick the berries. He could grab the ones that were farther in without having to worry about the thorns as much as Gabriel did.

Gabriel continued to happily pick the berries as Melanie watched with a smile.

As if on cue, a person came out of the shadows near the tree. Wisps of shadow were coming off of her as she stood there.

Gabriel turned to the person and smiled.

“Mama!”

“Hello my little one. I’m sorry that I had to go for a few minutes. Thank you for staying where I asked you to stay.”

“Of course mama!”

Melanie then noticed Viper.

“Oh, who’s this?”

“That’s Viper!”

Oh! Yes that was a good idea. He was still very small so it made sense.

Viper chirped and his head swiveled to the person, smiling when he realized who she was. “Hello!” He waved enthusiastically at her. “Was talking to small friend! Want to show neat plants.”

Melanie smiled warmly at Viper, happy that her son was making new friends.

“That sounds lovely Viper.”

“So I can go?”

Melanie nodded.

“Yay!”

Viper let out a happy chirp and went over to Gabriel, nudging him gently. “Les go!” Plant time!

Gabriel giggled, then started following Viper. Melanie followed the two.

Oh! Mom was coming too! Yay! He was going to show them SO many neat plants!!

Viper poked around, sniffing the air and sweeping his tail gently over the forest floor. Suddenly he perked up and crouched down, holding up a fern leaf right between the roots of a tree to reveal a patch of odd-looking mushrooms. They had long caps that looked like honeycombs, or maybe a termite-ridden piece of wood. “Oooo! Is morel! These ones are tasty! Maybe heard of them?” Apparently humans really liked these! Viper agreed, they were very good for eating.

Gabriel smiled as he looked at the mushrooms.

“Yeah! My mama uses them to make stew sometimes!”

“Ooo stew!” Stew sounded like a nice food that he would like! From what dad told him anyways. He picked a single one of the mushrooms and cut it in half with his claws, handing half to Gabriel and eating the other. “I like to have them sometimes! Only take one or two though, not want to hurt them too much.” If he took all of the mushrooms then there would be none to make more later!

Viper chirped happily and did a friendly lil wiggle. “Hello!! Am friend!” It peeped and crouched lower down, tilting its head at Gabriel and observing them.

He tilted his head too as he looked at Viper.

“um... who are you?”

“Oh! Am Viper! Nice to meet.” It purred, sitting down in a semi-crouch.

“Oh. I’m Gabriel...”

“Do you like the woods? I do, is nice out here.”The grass rustled softly as he ran a hand through it, looking down at a small flower before glancing back at Gabriel and grinning.

Gabriel smiled.

“yeah! It’s nice! So, what do you like to do out here?”

His grin widened. “Oh! Well, like to go in trees, and watch animals, and hunt! Uh, mostly first two though. Only hunt when hungry, and also look for berries and roots and plants! Lots of edible plants in forest, if you know where to look!” He liked finding plants! Wasn’t as fun as hunting but was still nice. And he was pretty sure this one would like to hear about that more. Not all creatures liked hunting…

“I like watching the animals too! I saw a deer with my mama earlier!”

“Ooo, deer! Deers are pretty! Can see lots of deers in forest, sometimes they have babies! Baby deer are very cute. Are little and fluffy!” He didn’t hunt deers with babies, felt mean to do. Baby deers were too cute to hunt.

“Yeah! I’ve always wanted to pet a deer, but they always run away...”

“Well… if are very slow and quiet, deers will be easier to get close to. You could bring them a little lettuce maybe? Oh! And baby deers are very curious, even came up to look at me!” And Viper was a predator! Not of baby deers but still, little things were surprisingly nice! Just little guys. “Sometimes baby deers will be sitting in grass waiting for parents and you can go say hi! Need to be very non-threat-looking though.” …he probably shouldn’t be encouraging kids to go try and pet deers. Only once is maybe ok though. If are careful! “But are still wild animals and have to be careful.”

“I know. My mama always says to be careful too.”

Oh! He nodded. “Mom is right! Careful is good.” He was glad they had a nice-seeming parent. “Buuuuttt! If see one and is nice then you can give it a little pat.”

Viper chirped happily and did a friendly lil wiggle. “Hello!! Am friend!” It peeped and crouched lower down, tilting its head at Gabriel and observing them.

He tilted his head too as he looked at Viper.

“um... who are you?”

“Oh! Am Viper! Nice to meet.” It purred, sitting down in a semi-crouch.

“Oh. I’m Gabriel...”

“Do you like the woods? I do, is nice out here.”The grass rustled softly as he ran a hand through it, looking down at a small flower before glancing back at Gabriel and grinning.

Gabriel smiled.

“yeah! It’s nice! So, what do you like to do out here?”

His grin widened. “Oh! Well, like to go in trees, and watch animals, and hunt! Uh, mostly first two though. Only hunt when hungry, and also look for berries and roots and plants! Lots of edible plants in forest, if you know where to look!” He liked finding plants! Wasn’t as fun as hunting but was still nice. And he was pretty sure this one would like to hear about that more. Not all creatures liked hunting…

“I like watching the animals too! I saw a deer with my mama earlier!”

Gabriel was standing near a tree by a patch of shadow, looking at a flower in his hands. He seemed happy.

Viper was just running around the forest when he smelled something odd. Was person? He crept over and, sure enough, there was the cloud sitting in the grass. The fact that he was a cloud was mostly offset by the fact that he was a hatchling. Little! Maybe friend? Viper crept out a bit, chirping softly. “Llooo? Friend?”

Gabriel flinched at the sudden voice and looked at Viper.

“H-hello?”
