Shadows fell everywhere light touched. The shadow spilling off the dreamer stretched ink black into the cave mouth, or perhaps from it. (Baldr scented tears and burning flesh wafting from the cavern, there and gone again.) A  resonant voice spilled from his lips with his greeting  — there was a shivering, bright quality to it like hummingbird wings,  a number of mouths speaking in a number of tongues. After a moment, English pressed to the forefront of the chorus. There was an easy SoCal lilt to it, its laughter rang like chimes. “Oh, why thank you for saying so! I have not heard that in some time. You are very handsome yourself.” The other voices limned its edges like a halo. He clasped his hands in front of his chest, then pressed them to his heart. “I’m glad I could catch you! I know you’ve been so busy as of late. Everyone who’s anyone has been talking.” There was levity in Baldr’s tone that he didn’t feel. His eager inspection of the man before him was in truth an inventory of injuries; his jaw tightened at the sight of sickly violet bruises blooming across his face and a welt cinching his throat.

Salt-kissed wind rolling off the North Sea blew Baldr’s hair across his face, Ran’s daughters running their hands through his free curls and ringing the bells and silver trinkets braided into the two thick plaits hanging down his chest like cords of silk. They were on an island in summer, jagged dust-colored rocks clothed in a blanket of green lichen.

Baldr moved around him as he spoke, though moved was not quite the right word: Baldr flickered like a coin in the sun, peering in Shadow’s face one moment, then at his side, then along the cervical vertebrae at the back of his neck. Swift as light, movement without the perception of movement.  Baldr liked the vessel — he liked the man’s warm skin and thoughtful eyes (because they were so like his), his thick-knuckled hands and broken nose (because they were not like his). Baldr wanted to turn him over in his hands and study every piece as if he were a relic of phenomenal importance.

“What do they call you, Wednesday’s man?”

Shadow’s eyes shifted feeling somewhat awkward for being the target of such a sudden compliment. His had had a much more LITERAL intention. But the golden man spoke so sweetly that he couldn’t bring himself to saying anything else besides a half-whispered             ❝   Thanks.   ❞        But he was a sight to be seen. BEAUTIFUL but not like one would expect a human to be. There was something about the way his curls brushed against his cheeks, something about how his voice sounded that reminded Shadow of home. Not the home he had found in Laura; HOME, HOME. The one waiting across the sea in Norway that he could hardly remember. The freshness of the morning by cold shores, the sight of the fjords bathed in sunlight, the relief of breathing in the promise of summertime and longer days . . . That man was all of these things and more. Nostalgic sights of a distant childhood, idealized and sculpted into a beautiful gentle creature that knew him and his current MISFORTUNE.  No matter how hard Shadow tried to look the GLOWING creature in the eye, it kept flickering in and out of his line of sight, forcing Shadow to turn and swirl on his heels, trying to get a good look, only to realize he was much too slow to keep up with this OLD acquaintance. His enthralling tone soothed the ex-convict, keeping any shred of frustration from ever reaching him.     ❝    Shadow.   ❞        He answered.      ❝    Shadow Moon.   ❞       His lips lingered open, as if there was something else to be said. But Shadow was afraid to question anything ; he didn’t want to ruin any of this. Didn’t want any heads to be severed or men to be hanged.  Shadow asked anyway;      ❝    Who are you?   ❞
