i have a file or folder on my pc that i want to share with other people. let's call it gayshit.mp3

unfortunately gayshit.mp3 is 750mb and im not paying for discord nitro so i need another way to send it

i put it into qbittorrent and it makes a torrent file. this is essentially a very small file that points to gayshit.mp3 so other computers can find it. kinda like a treasure map

i send this tiny file to my friend, who loads it into qbittorrent. their computer takes a moment to find mine over the vast expanse of cyberspace and then (as long as my pc is running and the file is still where it should be), it gets copied from my hard drive to theirs

this is the cool part: if somebody else loads that tiny file, they can download it from both of us. if i'm offline but my friend is on, the third person can still get it. this also means that if two people have separate halves of the file, they can download the other half from each other. as long as some combination of people have the pieces between them, they can all have the whole thing.

crucially this does not require a server!!! you can just upload the file to a few people and as long as they keep it, it's still accessible. as long as somebody, somewhere is still connected, it's available forever. the only way it goes away is if everybody disconnects from it.

I've had just about enough.

I've noticed more and more stuff getting pulled from Internet Archive. Earlier in the week, I had to edit some old posts removing IA links because the content was copyright claimed and removed.

This is 2008 Youtube all over again. People upload stuff that has never been widely available, and all the sudden IP holders care about properties and media they abandoned years ago.

There's no reason in the world a VHS tape of 6 hours of KidsWB broadcasts needs taken off the internet.

Outright piracy, I understand. Don't upload brand new movies to Internet Archive you idiots.

A VHS recording of the 1996 Nickelodeon Kids' Choice Awards? A fan mod for a 25 year old Game Boy game? A STAR WARS NOVEL THAT HAS NOT BEEN SOLD OFFICIALLY SINCE 2003? There's absolutely no reason this stuff shouldn't be available to the public.

The Internet Archive is so important and needs protected. The art, knowledge, history, nostalgia readily available there is priceless. Let us peons have this one little thing to enjoy.

Do what you are able to do when you are able to do it. Seek help if you are able and need it. You’re doing your best and that’s all that matters.

The White House issued an executive order yesterday titled "Designating Antifa as a Domestic Terrorist Organization." To be clear, the US has no legal category for "domestic terrorist organizations," and the order does not add any specific groups or individuals to the SDGT/SDN lists. In other words, this order does not literally designate "Antifa" as a terrorist organization under US law. But the point of the order is clear; Trump is telling federal law enforcement to:

...utilize all applicable authorities to investigate, disrupt, and dismantle any and all illegal operations — especially those involving terrorist actions — conducted by Antifa or any person claiming to act on behalf of Antifa, or for which Antifa or any person claiming to act on behalf of Antifa provided material support, including necessary investigatory and prosecutorial actions against those who fund such operations.

In other words, this order is the Trump administration's way of announcing their intention to expand the federal government's repression of left-wing activists.

If you are involved in activism that is in opposed to the Trumpist ideology, particularly on the issues that they most love to fearmonger about, you should be thinking about ways to make yourself and your friends harder to target. Move sensitive conversations over to end-to-end encrypted messaging services and set conversations to disappear automatically, get a VPN, be thoughtful about what you're saying and what information you're giving away online, consider what types of transactions are best conducted in cash rather than through cards/websites, and avoid communication with federal law enforcement whenever it can be avoided.

At the same time, you should not respond to this executive order by reducing your political involvement or abandoning particular causes. One of the main points of actions like this one is to intimidate and discourage people, to push them to censor themselves. It's important that you not allow them to succeed in that.
