Assalaamu alaykum. Letting go of this duniya is so hard. It's not that I'm attached; I'm just lazy.
Wa Alaykum Selam wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh,
Off course it is difficult, for the Dunya is a place filled with temptations. And the more you indulge in it, the more difficult it is to distance yourself from it later on.
But we must remember something. The best example of how to live our lives can be found in the life of the Prophet (peace be upon him), and that of the Sahaba, the Tabi‘in, and the Tabi‘ al-Tabi’in.
If we study their lives we see that they were the most desirous of the afterlife, and the least desirous of this worldly life. They saw the worldly life as a place where you dwell around for a little bit, and then you depart to your real destination (the afterlife).
And this has been perfectly summed up in the statement of our Prophet (peace be upon him) who said: ”Be in this world as though you are strangers and wayfarers.”
And your problem, in my opinion, is not laziness. Rather, it is a lack of knowledge about the true value of this world, and your purpose in this life. For a person who understand his purpose has his heart attached to the life of the Hereafter, whereas the one who does not understand this life has his heart attached to the Dunya.
Our Prophet (peace be upon him) has said: ”If the value of the world was made equal to that of the wing of a mosquito by Allah, He would not have allowed any Kafir (disbeliever) even a drink of water from it.”
Or in other words, this worldly life is really worth nothing. It is merely a place for us to dwell around for a little bit, do good deeds, and then be returned to our Creator. And by Allah, we will quickly return to Him as the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: ”The time between my being sent and the Hour is like the gap between the index and middle fingers.”
Therefore do not delude yourself by saying things such as ”I am lazy” or ”I can’t do it”. How can we be lazy when we are not even sure whether we are of the people of Paradise? How can we be lazy when we should be preparing for the long and hard journey after death?
You are not lazy when it comes to doing things that involve worldly matters such as going out with your friends, watching hours of TV, or going to play football or whatever it might be. So how can you be lazy with regards to that which is much more important!?
The things you yearn for in this worldly life are in fact completely worthless when compared to that which we will receive in the next world. And if you realize this deeply, then your heart will start to understand that what we will have in the life to come is much better and everlasting.
As Allah says: “And they are happy with the life of this world,but the life of this world is small comfort compared to the next world.” [13:26]
Thus it is a must that you live simply and turn away from the things of this world because they are in essence worthless. So why would you bother with something that is worthless?
And this turning away should not be such that you live like a hermit, without any possessions whatsoever. No, rather it means that you are always able to say Alhamdullilah, regardless of your condition, whether it is good or bad.
So to summarize, focus on Allah and pleasing Him. Make entering Jannah and earning Allah’s pleasure your top priority and everything else will be taken care of for you by Allah. Take some time to reflect on this world and your state. Think about death, think about how everything in this world is only temporary, and image yourself standing in front of Allah on the Day of Judgement.
Think about all these things. Reflect upon them, ponder upon them, and then Insha’Allah you will gain a deeper understanding of what is important in this life and start to act accoridngly.
