the final version of the piece, with and without the provided template. I am actually quite happy with this result! The colours and composition are really vibrant and funky! it wasn't the chosen design but I am proud of the result in any case.

unit 10 // external project - mondo brewing company x camberwell

initial planning stages of the Mondo Brewing Company external project brief, which was to design a beer can design on the theme "Working from Home/Homing From Work". I decided to go more whimsical and weird with this theme, and wanted to have a common character I draw in the center of it. I used the thumbnail task from the imagecraft project to brainstorm ideas, a method I really enjoy doing now, and came up with the idea above. I have two different versions of it, one thats more flat and another that plays a bit with perspective.

Redid one of the previous acrylic paintings bigger, and wrote the text digitally, taking inspiration from James Heiman's poster for the text placement.

I like the colours in this, however I'm not too sure about the text above the dogs, perhaps I'll experiment with different handwritten fonts.

based on the previous painting, here's the final album cover with in-context edits of it as a record sleeve and a spotify screenshot. I think the word placement works really well, however I may experiment with different fonts, as well working on the colouring of it, using the same techniques from the photoshop workshop last term.

getting more confident with acrylic painting; these paintings in particular came out really well and i'm considering using these for the poster and album. I'll scan them in and edit/fix the colours a bit and add the relevent text.

some quick digital tests + sketches of the album cover. I've decided to shorten the name to simply "Tombs", as that's more to the point/eyecatching.

some advice/feedback i was given from some past group tutorials:

- try making more finished versions of work, more cleaned up

- try multiple versions of my current idea

- place the album in a specific context, such as spotify, apple music etc.

recently came across a psychedelic rock band called Causa Sui; not only do they have great music but their album covers and posters are extremely vibrant and unique. they really stand out and capture the essence of their music. I do like the way they've placed all the necessary text on the album cover and will take this layout in consideration when laying out my album cover.

some experiments with acrylic; painting these was a way to let go and paint freely and i think it allowed for a certain style to shine through. I will be painting a few more of these and perhaps consider making one for the album cover and poster.

unit 10 - imagecraft // artist research

Kate Prior

James Heiman

Highly inspired by the layout + colour scheme of these two posters by Kate Prior and James Heiman. Heiman’s poster has a linocut feel to it which i really like, a rough and playful design. I also particularly like the word placement in each poster, the way “DEVO” floats around the dog in Prior’s poster and how the text is within the dog’s bodies in Heiman’s. I may use this text placement for my own poster.

the other bit of experimenting from the workshop was on illustrator; my skill level in illustrator is quite low as I never quite understood the program but the workshop helped me understand it a lot more. With this, i ended up unintentionally making a potential t-shirt design; the words were drawn with the pen tool and the image was taken from my sketchbook and made into a vector. I think this design could lead to a potential merch line for the band, not just t-shirts but even tote bags and the logo on the drumkit.

unit 10 // imagecraft - digital workshop pt1 

our third imagecraft workshop focused on using digital programs to make/manipulate images and looking at both common and unexpected uses of different programs, specifically photoshop, indesign and illustrator. This is the fist result of just experimenting with differeny layer modes on photoshop, as well as the levels, the hue and saturation tools and the colourize tool. Since I had experience with painting on photoshop, i wanted to look at a different way of colouring/shading using levels and the lasso tool; with the main dog in the center I circled certain parts with the lasso tool and edited the levels for that specific area. i think it gives a cool posterised/blocky affect to the dog, while being accurate to colour. the background dogs were taken from my sketchbook and i changed the layer modes to make them blend in with the background more, to make it look more psychedelic almost.

in my last group tutorial, I was advised to go back to my thumbnails and start taking some of those ideas further and think with colour, instead of keeping everything in black and white. I took two of my favourite compositions from my set of thumbnails; the one on the right i imagined a gradient colour scheme with a mesh of borzois in the background, perhaps the word placement can be a bit better/clearer. I really like the composition of the one on the left; the direction of the dogs facing the text is a good way to direct the viewer’s eye to the words.

the next thing we learnt during the ceramics workshop: how to make a mug/cylindrical object. I really like how this turned out, especially the little the 3D elements on the outside of the mug.

as part of my ips, i was thinking of using ceramics as a potential medium for the project. I hadn’t previously had any experience with ceramics, so this workshop was quite enjoyable. One of the things we learnt to make was a box with a lid; it was very satisfying working in the 3D and with my hands.

unit 10 // imagecraft - workshop 2: composition thumbnail task 

The task after the second workshop was focused more on composition: we were asked to take an element from our compostion and try to draw it various different ways in a similar grid to the last thumbnail task. This time when making thumbnails I focused a lot more on the composition and the movement of an image; how the eyes move and how I can use that for both my images. I’m creating two different images: an album cover and a tour poster for said album. Having movement will really benefit the poster as I can direct the viewer’s eyes to the text/information on the poster. For the album, it’s all about balancing the different elements and having subtle movement. I tried to incorporate all the composition elements within the thumbnails from the workshop.

Focusing on borzois as the main element made me realise that there’s a lot of movement opportunity especially in the borzoi’s long snout; I can use that as a way to direct the “flow” of the image, perhaps on the poster.
