Hi Gina, I really don't know how to handle all the public attention Harry's getting. I like that people see he's handsome, that he's still the same person, but it's always so much about his looks. It's always "I thought he'd lost his spark," "He shouldn't cut his hair," "He's back to his prime." I'm so tired of it. We have Harry singing "S2WL" at every concert, the Zane Lowe interview, and I wonder if that's not enough? I think the public has once again shown Harry that he has to change to be accepted, because these same people who are praising him called him ugly for years.
Maybe I'm overprotective of this mature 32 year old man, but it just baffles me that people don't understand him. I have a friend who's fascinated by Harry wearing shirts; somehow it feeds into the Harry DILF, Harry CEO, and whatever other labels I've seen on social media narrative. I'm not against someone finding him sexy, I myself think Harry is very sexy, although at the same time incredibly sweet. But when Harry wears that pink top with the ribbon, she tells me he doesn't look good, that she hopes he never wears something like that again. I tell her he looks good, very handsome, and very sweet too, and she keeps saying the same thing. In fact, she even said something about how huge he looks in it in such a derogatory way that I'd rather not elaborate. Just one concert before, she loved him.
I love it when he's clean-shaven, I feel like I can see so much more of his facial features. But sometimes I wish he'd tour with that mustache, because these people seem to never see beyond his physical appearance. It's not something they acknowledge, because they usually include Harry in lists of "men in the industry who aren't held to the same standards as women." I've definitely seen so much hate directed at Harry just for reinventing himself, for how he dances, for his appearance, that I'd be ashamed to include him in something like that.
I'm not a hypocrite, I also notice his looks. But there are so many interesting conversations you can have about him, yet you're more likely to find people talking about his physical and sexual appeal than anything else. Maybe it's my love for him that's talking, but I can't help but be affected by this situation.
I totally get it, love. I’ve really never seen anyone treat an artist this way—he’s hated for everything he does and then everything doesn’t do, so many people feel entitled to criticize every little thing about his personal appearance, and it’s horrifying how so many people express their love for him in such an entitled and conditional way.
That lyric, “You want a piece, or nothing at all” keeps playing in my head. I’ve begun to feel as though what he’s saying is that people only want the parts of him they, personally, deem appealing and acceptable. And if he doesn’t give them that, and only that, they want nothing to do with him.
I’ve stopped reading TikTok comments on any Harry videos. I find them so enraging. And I can barely watch videos of anyone talking about him—so few people seem to even have the slightest clue who he is or what he’s trying to say. Not that I know everything, but in refusing to look at him through a lens of queerness, closeting, and even the possibility of a long term relationship, means you’re very likely misunderstanding a huge part of who he is.
