Journalizing my thoughts and capturing images allow me to leave a blueprint about my life so that my children, family, friends and the world outside of my circle will have a better understanding of who I'm and how I became the man I'm today. During the course of my life, there were many things that I went through which provoked my emotions to release joy, sorrow, and pain. I felt not only obligated personally, but also spiritually to share those feelings so others could visualize my world. (Artist Statement) Anthony Alden' Vines

For over 25 years, I have used photography as both a witness and a tool for change — capturing truth without distortion and preserving moments with integrity.

To me, a mission is something that weighs on your heart so heavily that you cannot walk away from it. I am a nonconformist; I do not blindly adhere to social standards, political positions, or religious doctrines. I think independently, challenge systems, and question narratives. My work leans toward social activism, confronting racial injustice, cultural erosion, and generational division.

I struggle with aspects of today’s cultural climate. Somewhere along the way, pride, discipline, and responsibility began to slip through the cracks. We stopped passing the baton and instead started pointing fingers across generations.

Through my art, I ask: What compels you to invest in the youth? Because outrage without direction accomplishes nothing, and outcry without a clear purpose is a wasted emotion.

America is placing refugees in predominantly Black and low-income communities.

This issue has been a topic of debate for a long time. Consider this: if it weren't for Black communities, where would these refugees be relocated? White communities would likely not accept or tolerate such an invasion, and we all know this to be true.

Indigenous Black individuals need to recognize that we have few allies.

Many refugees tend to establish themselves as separate satellite communities, isolating themselves from Black neighborhoods. They arrive, settle, and immediately begin creating micro-cultures that operate independently of the existing community fabric. There is little interest in cultural exchange, unity, or mutual uplift. Instead, they function as inward-facing groups whose economic activity often relies on the very neighborhoods they avoid socially.

I had the opportunity to watch Sugarfoot of the Ohio Players perform live at one of his last open-air concerts in Columbus, Ohio, in Augus

I had the opportunity to watch Sugarfoot of the Ohio Players perform live at one of his last open-air concerts in Columbus, Ohio, in August 2013 at Bicentennial Park. The temperature that evening reached 98 degrees, with a heat index of about 105. Under the stage lights, it had to be at least 110 degrees. I was burning up just standing backstage taking photos, so I could only imagine how he felt, especially given his frail health.

His three-set, 90-minute performance was fueled by pure dedication and passion to give his loyal fans his very best; it was as if he instinctively knew this was his final curtain call. That evening, Sugarfoot decided to endure the heat and transcend into another musical dimension.

I watched in amazement as he limped backstage, sat in front of a warehouse fan, drank a bottle of ice-cold water, wiped off the sweat, and mumbled a prayer—I assumed he was asking the Lord for strength—before walking back onto the stage for another 30-minute set.

Fine art is often inaccessible to poor or working-class Americans—not because it is unaffordable, but because many lack an appreciation for the aesthetics and collectibility of original fine art. Growing up, our home was adorned with artwork, photographs, and family heirlooms. We didn’t have much money, but creativity surrounded us. Art was on the walls, in the stories our elders told, and in the music that played through our neighborhoods. We learned to value beauty not through wealth, but through exposure. Creativity was part of our survival—it gave us identity, pride, and hope.

Most Black males over-identify with their mothers, women who have, for generations, emotionally and economically carried the weight of the household. But in doing so, many have also unknowingly contributed to the emotional dependency and, in some cases, the emasculation of their sons.

Black women who came of age in the 1980s and 1990s often grew up in homes without fathers, or with men who themselves had been raised in female-dominated environments. Without emotionally and financially stable fathers to model Black masculinity, Black boys often look to their mothers as the de facto heads of household. They see her as both nurturer and provider, the only model of adult behavior consistently present. But that model is incomplete—and often shaped by a deeper, more insidious influence.

RAGE IN OVER THE RHINE (CINCINNATI) episode 2 "White flight" was the term created by sociologists for when middle-class whites began moving from poor city neighborhoods to newly developed suburban communities. OVER-THE-RHINE A TALE OF TWO CITIES "One city block at a time, low-income Black families are being quietly rezoned and displaced under the guise of progress, moving to communities considered more 'gender appropriate.' Over the past 30 years, LGBTQ+ communities, supported by financial resources and cultural momentum, have purchased entire blocks in impoverished inner-city neighborhoods. What began as efforts to create safe havens has, in some instances, evolved into partnerships with commercial developers, resulting in cultural enclaves that unintentionally reflect the same patterns of displacement that were once imposed on them." How can we have an honest conversation about race in America when no one wants to compensate the victims of racism? Job training, jobs, family counseling, inferior schools, drug and alcohol rehabilitation, and police brutality must be addressed. OTR is a tale of two worlds: Black vs. White. Many people fail to recognize the collateral damage caused by institutional racism on Black communities. We cannot address this issue until America acknowledges that oppression and white privilege have created generations of suffering for Black individuals, largely due to systemic mistreatment. White-on-Black violence is comparable to Black-on-Black violence, as one often initiates the other.
