Last year, I befriended a Catholic seminarian. We've gotten to be pretty decent friends. Seeing as he was staying in town for the summer and I wasn't, I entrusted him with caring for my plant.

He did a wonderful job, but as he was returning my plant to my custody, he explained "I watered her every other day, I gave her new dirt, moved her into the sunshine, prayed the rosary-"

"What?"

He looked at me, confused. "Isn't she a plant you pray with?"

"No," I said slowly. "She's a prayer plant. That's the... colloquial name of the plant."

Upon seeing his stricken face, I realized something went wrong. Turns out, this entire time, he's been including my plant in on his prayers and leaving her near icons.

Listen, totally cool. My plant becoming Catholic is a great deal for her not dying over the summer. But now I must navigate this interfaith household. Keep me in your thoughts.

It’s made by actual Greek people and focuses on a mother-daughter relationship to explore how women are sacrificed by powerful men in times of war. You know what, I bet Patrick O'Brian is the reason I always feel the need to extensively research every subject I write about. That man gave us the entirety of maritime jargon and then an audience surrogate with zero practical sailing skills just so he could teach us all the maritime jargon. And then also gave that character extremely niche scientific hobbies so he could also teach us about critters and natural sciences in the 1800's. I swear it's the epitome of 'i learned this while researching something completely different, fell down a rabbit hole of discovery, and now i'm adding it to the story bc i think it's neat! :B'

This is going to sound so stupid but as someone from a subtropical area, I struggle to fathom the climate of Britain. I’ve been doing a lot of research on the climate of southern Wales. What do you mean the temperature is usually between 34°f and 66°f? The record low is only -9.9°f and the record high is 98°f? I’m from a place where it is usually between 30° f and 90°f, the record low is -34°f and the record high is 110°f. My brain cannot comprehend the idea of a place that isn’t freezing in the winter and sweltering in the summer. No life threatening temperature seesaw? No tornadoes? No hail?

It is wild that modern humans began consistently inhabiting Britain around 12,000 years ago after the last Ice Age and modern humans began inhabiting Australia about 65,000 years ago and North America around 30,000 years ago. Britain was an uninhabitable sheet of ice until relatively recently in terms of human history and people have been fighting the weather and wildlife of Australia and the Americas far longer.
