Koraidon!!! I made this to get a sense of how long the Really Really Complicated Ones might take me. The result for this friend was 31 hours, but worth every minute! I'm so pleased with how they came out, and I had a lot of fun getting stuck into something with so many interesting details!

Thousand Roads is hosting its seventh annual one-shot contest, and this year's theme is obscure and unusual jobs in the Pokémon World! There are plenty of stories out there featuring trainers on journeys or Pokémon rescue and exploration teams--we're looking for fic about all the other professions that are rarely written about. What does the life of a firefighter, a construction worker, or a mathematician look like in the Pokémon World?

Any genre of story is welcome, whether it's a comedy about an orb salesman in the PMD world or a slice of life about a family of bakers in Celadon City. The jobs being featured can be carried out by humans, Pokémon, or both!

Here’s how it works:

Write a one-shot fanfic of 10,000 words or less that focuses on an unusual Pokémon job

Sit back and wait for judging to complete!

Everyone who enters will receive the following:

In-depth feedback from our panel of judges

The opportunity to promo their entry in a feature post highlighting contest participants

In addition, the judges will select their top three stories, the authors of which will be featured in our hall of fame with an exclusive interview.

The cast of In Stars and Time, crocheted!

I love this game and its characters so much, and while I don't usually like to crochet humans, Siffrin's design is just so cute and so shaped that I really wanted to make an exception for them. Only, I couldn't stop at just Siffrin, because he'd be sad if he was all on his own, so I had to make everyone else to keep them company! I love how they all came out - the cute chibi-ish art style for the characters in-game translates really well to amigurumi.

Sif's hat and cloak are removable, too!

I made an aromantic pride snake!

This came about for a few reasons:

I'd been wanting to experiment with beads big enough to be worked into crochet

The assortment of bead colours I'd bought to start experimenting with happen to have lots of colours that fit pride flags

It's Pride Month, why not try that out now

I'm aro, so obviously that had to be the first thing I made

In the process, I accidentally ended up designing a fidget toy? The way the beads and the yarn interact makes this noodle friend very satisfying to hold and wiggle and play around with! :3

Since I'm also ace, I then added some asexual pride feathers to evolve them into an aroace quetzalcoatl!

These are quite simple to make and I have many more bead colours, so I was thinking of maybe making some more snakes of different pride flags (without the feathers) to sell, and/or writing up and selling the pattern so that other people can make their own? Let me know if you'd be interested in either of those!

There is this whole romantic notion about a baby's first word, but it turns out what actually happens is at some point they start going "mamamammamaammamama" and you have to try to vaguely assess at what point it stops being plausibly deniable as random syllables and starts to carry some sort of conscious meaning.

I think if Caterpie has any notion of her consecutive "ma" syllables signifying anything in particular right now, it's probably something more like "I want something" than a call for me. Would that count as a word, if she's just made up her own meaning for it? Who knows. Either way, it's amusing that she does in fact say mamma a lot, but plausible deniability remains in effect. It'll be fun when she manages something obviously contextual, like if she were to imitate us saying 'datt' (fell) when something falls.

Caterpie turned nine months old at the beginning of June, and I drew another card (I did a couple more in between, too).

Scyther! I thought this would end up as one of the most time-consuming Pokémon (barring big legendaries etc), but actually, despite the complexity, he wasn't as time-consuming as some. He has toothpicks in his arms and legs, but even then, I'm amazed he manages to stand on two feet without support. (Precariously.)

Hi, Butterfree! I recently read your one-shot named "Go" and that one-off line you wrote about Pidgey being confused by the narrator's attempt to explain currency to her, written about ten years ago, has beat-for-beat made its way into Pokopia, where the Trade mechanic is entirely barter-based using the value assigned to items in your pockets. There is no currency system at all. Anyway, totally unrelated, but has anyone ever seen Satoshi Tajiri in the same room as a Butterfree at the same time?

Technically that line wasn't in the original 2016 version of Go - I fleshed out the narrator's relationship with Pidgey a fair bit for the 2023 revision, which is the one that's up on TCoD. Still predates Pokopia, obviously, but not quite by a decade!

Either way, Pokémon not really understanding money is a pretty straightforward extrapolation of the series' worldbuilding, I think, and definitely not unique to me. Money is one of the more abstract things human society has going on, and when you're dealing with something roughly like the Pokémon world of the mainline games or anime, Pokémon don't appear to form societies with that level of abstraction going on (as opposed to something like Pokémon Mystery Dungeon, where Pokémon form completely humanlike societies with shops, houses, businesses, etc.). They may be sapient and have language, be capable of making and executing plans, etc. - but by all appearances they don't naturally do anything like using money. Pokopia Pokémon do lots of more human things than we usually see Pokémon in the mainline sorts of worlds do, but they're explicitly doing them in a "trying to imitate humans while having a limited understanding of them" way; doing some form of trading and bartering but not straight-up money just checks out.

Another of my favourite creations: a sparkly noodly dragon friend...

...who is also a lamp!

The lamp itself was store-bought and came in that twisty shape, but it occurred to me that I could use my crochet powers to make it much cooler! The dragon wasn't crocheted around the lamp; rather, he was made as two long strips, one for the back and one for the belly, which were sewn together along one side and then wrapped around the lamp and the other sides sewn together there. I chose (mostly-)white yarn for the belly with a loose-weave sort of pattern, so the light would shine through.

I had fun using a lot of sparkly yarn and thread and adding extra frills to make him super fabulous! And don't worry, the lamp is an LED that never gets remotely hot, so there's no danger of fire from this dragon, only light!

One of my biggest projects - an entire Hydrapple, with all the syrpents included! There's toothpicks in the main head's horns for rigidity, while every syrpent has armature wire inside them for poseability. And...

...that includes the two tail syrpents! All six syrpents other than the main one are completely removable along with the apple top, which has little hooks to hold it in place when it's on there. The apple base also has a plastic pot inside it, to help it hold all that weight.

The one thing they can't do is fold the bonus heads flat against the apple like the ingame model does, but they can get... some of the way there? although it does require something of a Noodle Vortex on the inside for all those tails to still fit in the apple.

Very proud of these good apple noodle friends and how well they turned out!

Chien-Pao, another noodle! I crocheted its sword-fangs around toothpicks to keep them rigid., and the tail had a bunch of short rows to make it naturally curl like that.
